What's Hot on SlashControl: Criss Angel Mindfreak - Bike Jump Vanish

by Jane Boursaw, posted Nov 29th 2009 9:03AM
I'm the perfect Criss Angel Mindfreak viewer, because I have no idea how he does all those stunts and tricks. I'd like to, though!

And while Criss seems just plain freaky, he's always the perfect gentleman when dealing with people. Except for times when he does something completely freaky and you'd think the people involved would have a heart attack.

In one episode, I watched a guy who seemed like he was actually having his head cut off by a guillotine. It seemed so real, because Criss was running around telling people to call 911 and whatnot, and the guy's wife was nearly having a stroke. Unless they were in on it, that was way too cruel a trick to play on anyone.

In this clip from our sister site SlashControl, Criss trains with champion aerialist and world record jump holder Trigger Gunn to jump a 60-foot long, 20-foot high ramp at 50 mph. Apparently, Criss is a longtime fan of motorcycle jump legend Evel Knieval.

What's Hot on SlashControl: Criss Angel Mindfreak - Halloween Special

by Jane Boursaw, posted Oct 21st 2009 1:03PM
Criss Angel Mindfreak - Halloween SpecialI'm kind of mesmerized by Criss Angel. He's definitely one freaky guy -- or is that mindfreaky? -- and every time I surf by him, I have to back up and watch whatever unbelievable, death-defying stunt he's performing. For one thing, he looks like a vampire. But a very polite vampire. I can see how all the female stars fall in love with him.

I got involved in a Criss Angel Mindfreak marathon not too long ago, and am still stumped as to how he does those levitations, his signature magic trick. I'm not kidding, he took an entire room of people and levitated them, some in bizarre positions that could never be done, even if the person was wide awake and as flexible as an Olympic gymnast.

We're talking backward bends, leaning to the point of toppling over and, of course, 20 feet off the ground. Someone tell me how he does that?!! I'm such a sucker for magic tricks.

This week on TV: A leaning tower of fondant on 'Cake Boss,' Criss Angel gets buried alive and the 'Mad Men' are back. -- By Kim Potts

MONDAY, AUG. 10

Cake Boss'Cake Boss' (10PM, TLC)
We still love Duff and the 'Ace of Cakes' gang, but New Jersey baker Buddy Valastro is one of the best new surprises of the summer, and watching him in action as the titular head cake maker at Hoboken's Carlos Bakery has been the year's least-guilty pleasure. On the menu in tonight's episode: The Leaning Tower of Pisa, replicated in cake, and a lobster-themed cake that Buddy scrambles to assemble after the client mixes up the date.

'Pushing Daisies'
(8PM, ABC) 2nd season premiere
What's a stressed-out girl to do when she's already got a head full of secrets and then learns yet another bit of juicy scoop that could prove life changing for those around her? Get thee to a nunnery!

That's the solution for Olive, who goes off to hang with some nuns when the burden of Ned and Chuck's (and now Aunt Lily's) secrets get to be too much.

Meanwhile, back at The Pie Hole, Ned's freaking out about Chuck's need to be independent, Emerson's indulging his love of pop-up books and Chuck goes undercover at a honey-based cosmetics company to find out who killed Betty's Bees' head Bee Girl. Hey, they don't call the show quirky for nothing.

'Shear Genius'
(10PM, Bravo) 2nd season finale
Sally Hershberger -- she of the $800 haircuts -- is the guest judge as the final three contenders must style the locks of four different clients to win the $100,000 prize.

Oh wait, not only do Charlie, Dee and Nicole have to style four clients ... they also have to do it in a mere three hours, which anyone who's ever sat around a salon with little pieces of foil wrapped around their head knows is a tight schedule.

We'd say the supremely confident (read: cocky) Charlie is the favorite to win, but underrated NYC cutter Nicole snuck into the finals with her impressive twins styling, and who doesn't love an underdog win?

'Architecture School'
(9PM, Sundance) series premiere
Into every summer a little feel-good TV should fall, and Sundance has that covered with this six-part documentary, which covers a Tulane University architecture student program that's helping rebuild post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans.

The show follows a group of seniors in Tulane's architecture department who must conceive, design and then actually help build a new home for a family hoping to get back on its feet in the city.

The students compete with each other to see who can come up with the best plan for a single-family house that is innovative, affordable, environmentally friendly and features bold design elements, but the real winners are, of course, the new homeowners and the still-struggling Big Easy.

'Lewis Black's Root of All Evil'
(10:30PM, Comedy Central) 2nd season premiere
This one should be a battle royale. Which is more likely the root of all evil: ultimate fighting or bloggers?

Tough call, but comedians Patton Oswalt and Andrew Daly will make their best cases in the season opener of the show that, at its best, is a great excuse for host Lewis Black's trademark rants.

Last season, Black presided over the mock court as Oswalt, Daly and fellow comics argued the inherent evilness of everything from Donald Trump and Viagra to high school and 'American Idol,' with Daly compiling a 2-0 record to Oswalt's uneven 2-2 tally.

Here's hoping the funny dudes finally get a chance to take on the match-up that, according to Black, has been banned so far: The nefarious natures of Scientology vs. Disney.
