Jason Turns 'Dating in the Dark' Into Dating With a Dummy (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 7th 2010 5:16AM
'Dating in the Dark'Jason must have thought 'Dating in the Dark' (Mon., 10PM on ABC) had all the girls isolated from one another as well as the guys, or he was under the delusion that girls don't talk to one another. First, with Violet, he brought in a bowl of strawberries, some whipped cream and a heaping helping of sexual innuendo.

When Violet asked of the strawberry, "Is it a really big one?" Jason responded, "Oh, it's really big. Trust me." Her rolling eyes said it all, and with the lights out, she wasn't holding back any expressions.

Brian Is a Virgin on 'Dating in the Dark' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Aug 24th 2010 8:10AM
Brian Is a Virgin on 'Dating in the Dark'On 'Dating in the Dark' (Mon., 10PM ET on ABC), Lisa knew that Brian was "spiritual," but what did that really mean? In a word: virgin. He described himself as "passionate" but said, "I'm waiting for my future wife in the sense that I want to honor her -- to say, 'Hey, I waited for you because I want sex to be the most it can be.'"

Lisa was so caught off guard that she started giggling. And how did he feel toward women (like Lisa) who weren't virgins? He considered sex outside of marriage a "mistake," but said that "her past is the past. I'm a big-picture kind of dude ... You deserve a guy who loves you and respects you for who you are."

'Dating in the Dark': Finding Love in the Shadows (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 17th 2010 4:35AM
'Dating in the Dark': Finding Love in the ShadowsLove is blind, or so they say. But what if this was literally the case? What if you actually couldn't see the face or the body of the person you were hanging out with? That's the interesting scenario presented by 'Dating in the Dark' (Mon., 8PM ET on ABC).

The reality show throws new couples together in complete and utter darkness. They can't see each other -- but through the magic of night-vision technology, we can watch them interacting.

Tonight, Becky and Michael are one of the random pairs who go on a very "blind" date. ( ... Get it?) The couple seems to get along just fine -- and some touching and kissing happens. But then, it's time for Becky and Michael to meet in the full light of day. Will their romantic connection work out, once it's no longer pitch black? Or will one of them be grossed out, after seeing the face of their new potential lover?

On 'Dating in the Dark,' Joey Gets Crazy and Insults a Girl About Her Weight (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 10th 2010 1:00AM
On 'Dating in the Dark,' Joey Gets Crazy and Insults a Girl About Her WeightIf you couldn't see someone, then how would you feel about them? Would you feel better, or would you feel worse? That's the question on 'Dating in the Dark' (Mon., 10PM ET on ABC).

Joey has a date with Natasha. But the premise of the show is that the parties involved can't actually see each other, and are instead plunged into total darkness.

So, on their date without light, Joey feels Natasha up -- and rubs her all over with his hands. At first, Joey is happy. Why? Because Natasha seems to be the right body-type for him. But that's before Joey's craziness kicks in.

As it turns out, Joey has some major, major issues with girls and their weight. At first, after touching Natasha all over in the dark, he seems "cool" with her body. But then, he can't help himself, and begins talking about how much he dislikes overweight girls. This includes a discussion of a previous girlfriend who was once thin, but who then "blew up like a tick."

Natasha is rightfully appalled, and doesn't want to have anything more to do with Joey. And we'll have to admit that we're on her side here. Joey kind of seems like a jerk.

'Dating in the Dark' Host Talks Deep TV Love Connections (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Aug 9th 2010 2:30PM
'Dating in the Dark'Last summer, 'Dating in the Dark' presented an interesting twist on the classic dating reality show, and now it's back for more night vision scenes of sexy singles fumbling around in the dark to try to get to know one another.

Host Rossi Moreale explained to us why the show works, and why it doesn't matter if you've graced the cover of Maxim or not -- he says contestants are finding a deeper connection because "they're actually having a conversation and not just staring at each other's butts."

With season 2 premiering (Mon., Aug. 9, 10PM ET on ABC), will you watch? Or are you over dating on reality TV?

More 'Dating in the Dark' for ABC

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 10th 2010 2:00PM
Dating in the DarkLate last year, when people were caterwauling over the baseness of ABC's 'Conveyor Belt of Love', a show that was often lumped into the same we're-going-to-hell-in-a-handbasket category was the Alphabet Net's summer series 'Dating in the Dark.'

The comparison was a bit unfair. Not that 'Dark' was Shakespeare or anything, but at least it had the faint patina of being part scuzzy dating reality show, part social experiment. Would these people who got to really like each other in a pitch-black room still like each other when the lights were turned on? The surprise of the show's first season was that, no matter what you hear on those sickening eHarmony commercials, both men and women have the capacity to be shallow as hell.

The good news is that we'll be seeing more of that this summer, as word comes from Variety that ABC has ordered six more episodes of 'Dating in the Dark.'

ABC Greenlights Second Season of 'Dating in the Dark'

by Chris Jordan, posted Feb 9th 2010 3:00PM
ABC apparently likes what it sees in the dark room.

According to the Live Feed, the net has re-upped 'Dating in the Dark' for a second season. The show -- which premiered to a healthy 6.3 million viewers last summer -- aired after the adventures of Jillian Harris on 'The Bachelorette' on Mondays.

'Dating in the Dark' has one of the most convoluted reality show premises around (well, until 'Conveyor Belt of Love' came around, anyway): Six singles move into a house and are only able to interact with the opposite sex either in the dark room, where they cannot see each other, or via e-mail. The sequences in the dark room are filmed with infra-red cameras; afterward, the couples' appearances are revealed to each other -- for better or worse.

Best and Worst TV of 2009: Jason's List

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 21st 2009 5:06PM
Daniel Wright2009 was a good year for television. It offered the resurgence of the comedy on network television, and the continuing growth of original programming on cable. In all honesty, I don't think I could just do a list of what was great and what was horrible on television because I would need pages and pages.

Instead, I'm going to focus on the things that really stood out this year. Sorry, Mad Men fans, but even though this was a great third season and an amazing finale, I expect it at this point. It's the only way I could come up with to keep my list manageable.

Also, as a point of protest I did not include Jon, Kate or the balloon boy hoax. These events got more attention than they deserved already this year, and I feel bad I even mentioned them.

ABC's Dating in the Dark actually works as an examination of dating

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 30th 2009 12:02PM
Dating in the DarkI didn't have a lot of faith that ABC's Dating in the Dark would make for good television. But it's surprised me. In only two weeks, it's already made interesting observations on attraction and the human sport of dating. The only drawback for me so far is that virtually everyone is attractive on the show.

If the point is to see if personality can overcome physical appearance, then shouldn't you bring in some people who aren't conventionally attractive? And I mean more than just having a hot blonde with some acne and a couple of people with about fifteen pounds of extra weight around the middle.

Nevertheless, we did get a bit of shallowness, as well as people learning that it does pay to get to know someone before you judge them on their looks alone. Of the six couples we've seen so far, only two have walked away after seeing one another. And only one of those was based on physical appearance.
