It was 'Dance Floor Royalty' Week on 'Platinum Hit' (Mon., 10PM ET on Bravo) and so the legendary Donna Summer stopped by as guest judge. Some of the contestants were nervous about tackling songs with a dance hook, but 23 year-old telemarketer Nick Nittoli was real confident he would win the challenge.
When it came time for Donna to announce the results, she said she'd chosen the winning song because it stood out from the rest.
She told the nervous songwriters that she'd wanted to hear something new and original: "I've been in the business a long time ... [and] maybe you haven't, but I've heard it all before."
!!!SPOILER ALERT!!! As Donna said, "And the winner is ... " Nick was just sure she'd say his name.
On the Scene: Michael Grimm on Winning 'America's Got Talent'
by Michael Maloney, posted Sep 16th 2010 10:00AM
Southern soul singer Michael Grimm pulled a shocking upset by winning Season 5 of 'America's Got Talent' over front-runner Jackie Evancho, the 10-year-old opera singer from Pennsylvania."It's really still sinking in," Grimm told TV Squad after the show. "But I do want to thank America, 'America's Got Talent,' the judges and, most importantly, I want to thank God."
Prior to his victory, Grimm, an aspiring singer, had trouble getting record labels to consider him. They'd want to know how big his following was because they didn't have money to invest in him. "Well, now I have a little money and I have fans," he says gratefully.
"I haven't talked to my grandparents yet," he said. "But it's going to be an emotional moment."
"When you stand there and you see a guy who's never had a break in his life and he starts crying, you say, 'This was the right decision,'" judge Sharon Osbourne says about Grimm's victory.
AI7 Report Card: The season that was
by Jason Hughes, posted May 27th 2008 1:03PM
We scoured the earth (and the archives at various record companies for failed projects that showed vocal promise) to create the greatest assemblage of singing talent American Idol has ever seen! So what happened? After last year's virtual snooze-fest, how did a season that truly did give us perhaps the greatest depth of talent we've ever seen (an argument could be made for Season Five) give us such lackluster shows? After Sanjaya-gate last year, the biggest controversy to come out this year was that finalist David Hernandez used to be a stripper and David Archuleta's dad might be a Mr. Meany-Pants. And we got to be pissed that Kristy Lee Cook outlasted the likes of Michael Johns. Not until we got to the finale of Davids did things get really intense.
