Further Thoughts on 'Torchwood,' Plus Podcast Chat on 'Falling Skies,' 'The Hour' and More

by Maureen Ryan, posted Aug 5th 2011 6:30PM
I'm a bit behind in posting updates about the last two podcasts, but we've got packed edition of Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan this week.

In this week's podcast, Ryan McGee and I talk about TNT's 'Falling Skies,' which has its season finale Sunday, 'Torchwood,' which hits the midpoint of its Starz season tonight, and 'The Hour,' an interesting new drama that arrives on BBC America Aug. 17. I am not sure if I'll get a chance to write a full review of 'The Hour' this month, so if you're interested in the period drama, which stars Dominic West of 'The Wire' as a news anchor in mid-'50s London, you might check out our non-spoilery discussion of the show.

In the last segment, I talk about some of the things that have transpired at the Television Critics Association press tour, which I've been attending for the last two weeks.

I've got a bit more to say about the new season of 'Torchwood' further down in this post, and there are running times for the podcast below as well.

Aliens (and Christina Aguilera) Attack the Talking TV Podcast

by Maureen Ryan, posted Jun 17th 2011 1:00PM
This week's second Talking TV with Ryan and Ryan podcast is a bit of an odd mixture. Ryan McGee and I talk about 'The Voice,' NBC's hit singing show, 'Falling Skies,' an alien invasion drama that arrives on TNT Sunday, and 'Outcasts,' another sci-fi drama that premieres on Saturday on BBC America. (By the way, the photo here is of Colin Cunningham, who is one of the best things, if not the best thing, about 'Falling Skies').

Running times for the podcast are below. In case you missed it, in the podcast we recorded earlier in the week, we talked all 'Doctor Who,' all the time.

Reviews: Are 'Falling Skies' and 'Outcasts' Summer Sci-Fi Shows Worth Watching?

by Maureen Ryan, posted Jun 16th 2011 2:45PM
Two sci-fi pilots debuting this weekend don't bother with the pretentious throat-clearing and cryptic interludes that have tripped up many of the 'Lost' imitators of the past few years. These new shows start well after terrible disasters have mostly destroyed Earth.

'Outcasts' (9PM ET Saturday, BBC America) deftly sketches a portrait of a settlement that humanity has created on another planet after leaving Earth, and 'Falling Skies' (9PM ET Sunday, TNT) also has a refreshingly basic premise: Aliens are here and they're trying to kill us. That's what I'm talking about.

But just as aliens tend to turn up where they're least wanted, problems invade each drama fairly early on.
