Fantasia Barrino Sings Her New Single to Steven Tyler on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 31st 2011 11:56PM
Fantasia Barrino, 'American Idol'The hair and look may have been reminiscent of Chris Tucker's role on 'The Fifth Element,' but the voice was all Fantasia Barrino. The Season 3 winner of 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) made a return to the stage that made her famous with her new single, 'Collard Greens & Cornbread.'

Her latest album, 'Back to Me,' was released on August 24, 2010 to positive reviews and pushed Barrino to Number 2 for her debut week. Since then, though, the album has slowed and hasn't quite reached 500,000 units sold.

Hoping for another 'Idol' bump with her third single, Barrino sang like a classic R&B diva. She was confident and poised, and even had a few words of advice to the contestants. But before she spoke to them, she slipped "Steven Tyler, I love you" into the closing notes of her song.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 15th 2011 5:00PM
Remember way back when Season 9's Alex Lambert claimed, via Twitter, to be living on the streets? Then a rep from 19 Entertainment, which has a development deal with Lambert, claimed the contrary, citing a retainer from which Lambert recieves monthly checks.

Well, Lambert, who's been tweeting away over the past month, had this to tweet about 19 Entertainment's reponse:

"19 entertainment put me on a retainer>>?"

Then, in a response to a tweet from fellow season 9–er Andrew Garcia asking what a retainer is (umm), Lambert followed up:

"$$$ dude! These guys have been telling the media they been payin me! Makin me look like im lyin! It's a shame dude!"

by Hilary Rothing, posted Feb 11th 2011 7:15PM
'American Idol' may not always make lasting superstars, but at least the show is good for boosting the album sales of its judges panel...or least one of them.

According to Nielsen Soundscan, Steven Tyler's Aerosmith has seen an incredible 250% increase in sales of their "Greatest Hits" compilations. The 'Idol' effect was also felt in Aerosmith's singles catalog, with a 363% boost for power ballad and 'Idol' audition favorite, "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing," during the week ending Jan 30th. As for J.Lo's record sales, no news is...

Where Was David Cook Among the 'American Idol' Winners?

by Andrew Scott, posted May 26th 2010 10:40PM
Departing judge Simon Cowell was supposed to be the center of attention in the 'American Idol' season 9 finale. But ironically, it was the former 'American Idol' winners who stole the show during his special farewell tribute segment, which also featured the return of former judge Paula Abdul.

In a true show-stopping moment, winners Kelly Clarkson, Ruben Studdard, Fantasia Barrino, Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks, Jordin Sparks and Kris Allen took to the stage to sing 'Together We Are One' by Delta Goodrem, during which they were joined by a revolving door of 'Idol' finalists that included everyone from Kimberly Caldwell to Constantine Maroulis and, yes, Justin Guarini.

Noticeably absent, though, was season 7 winner David Cook -- the only 'Idol' winner who did not take part in the group performance. According to Twitter, Cook was attending a charity event for cancer in Kansas City. An official word from Cook's camp has yet to be released.

American Idols on Broadway - Who's Hit the Great White Way?

by AOL TV Staff, posted Feb 4th 2010 6:34PM
After nine inspiring, crazy, unpredictable seasons on the air, the only thing certain is that even an appearance on 'American Idol' can launch you toward off-the-charts success.

For a performer of any kind to make it to Broadway, though, you need more in your quiver than arrows pointing to image or personality. You need the solid, confident, cultivated talent that not only catapults a song across the footlights, but the chops to do it eight times a week. Acting ability, imagination, perseverance -- these are all key. The 'Idol' contestants and winners who have starred on the Great White Way know this. After all, if you've survived week after week, facing and conquering new musical challenges over and over, you're probably in good enough shape to make Broadway your home.

Quite a few 'Idol' favorites have come to the New York stage. Some stay for months, eating up the adoration of fans. Some are jazzed by the rigor of playing a role night after night. Some job in for a spell, then spearhead national tours, able to sing for the public wherever they live. However they do it, performing on Broadway is a mark of pride and distinction for nine 'Idol' favorites -- with the 10th set to arrive, we hope, later this year.<

Fantasia on 'Oprah': Too Broke to Buy Pizza (VIDEO)

by Harley W. Lond, posted Feb 3rd 2010 6:41PM
Fame is fleeting -- especially when it comes to money.

'American Idol' third season winner Fantasia Barrino sang the money blues on 'Oprah Winfrey' (weekdays, syndicated). Oprah asked Fantasia about her statement to People Magazine that two years ago she'd didn't have money to buy a pizza. "What happened to all the money," Oprah queried. Clearly shaken, Fantasia told Oprah that there was a lot of money coming in (before her surgery) but she didn't know where it was going. "I went to buy a pizza and the card was declined" she said. "At that time I knew I was mishandled."

'American Idol' Winner Auditions: High Notes & Humble Beginnings (VIDEO)

by AOL TV Staff, posted Jan 19th 2010 11:10AM

Having waited tables or shoveled cow poo before becoming pop stars, famous people often don't care to rehash history. But when 'American Idol' is the vehicle that launched that superstar career, it's difficult to obscure the past with the sparkle of a Grammy and the gleam of platinum records, especially when the show's audition clips are some of the most fun viral videos out there.

Former 'AI' contestants like chart toppers Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and David Cook and Broadway babes Fantasia Barrino and Taylor Hicks once had to audition, too. Their tryouts are time capsules of raw talent that make you wonder how these artists ever wallowed in the same pool of hopefuls as William Hung, "Bikini Girl" and some of this season's worst auditions. Plus, watching Simon Cowell discredit Jordin Sparks during her audition because of her "weird smile" and "cutesy" delivery -- and knowing that he would eat his words when she won season 6 -- is priceless.

Take a look at the audition videos of all the 'American Idol's and see if you can spot the birth of a winner in each one.

'American Idol': A to Z

by AOL TV Staff, posted Jan 12th 2010 10:00AM

As we head into 'American Idol' season nine, it's time to look back -- and ahead -- at all the things that make up our favorite reality show, from A to Z.

A is for Auditions, which last for nearly six weeks until we get to the top 12 finalists of season 9. The show premieres Jan. 12, goes through auditions in Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Orlando, Dallas, Los Angeles and Denver until we reach the Hollywood rounds on Feb. 9 and meet the top 12 male and top 12 female semifinalists at the end of the Feb. 17 episode. And yes, that's 24 semifinalists, the way the show did it during seasons 4 through 7, unlike last year's cumbersome top 36. Check out the schedule for 'American Idol' season 9 at Inside TV.

Fantasia and Rudy Huxtable getting reality shows ... Who's next?!

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 16th 2009 3:05PM
Keshia Knight PulliamDoes Gary Coleman have a reality show yet? At this point, it seems that everyone and their brother is getting a reality show. You knew the end was nigh when Kim Kardashian's entire family got a reality show. That's a family getting a show based on a big ass. And I mean that in more ways than one. Keshia Knight Pulliam, who's famous for being a cute little girl on The Cosby Show twenty years ago is getting her chance to shine. Now 30, Pulliam is set to "star" in a reality show for Oxygen about her fun, young life with her live-in boyfriend. Yawn, man I think I fell asleep typing that.

But that's not all! Fantasia Barrino is getting her own reality show on VH1 and it doesn't have anything to do with skanks or dating! Fantasia won American Idol way back in Season 3, had her own Lifetime movie and a successful book and musical accolades to spare. But she's been more out of the public limelight in recent years while she performed on Broadway in The Color Purple. But still, I think Taylor Hicks needs a reality show more than Fantasia.
