Father Knows Best
New TV on DVD Releases This Week
Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow. It's not many weeks where there is a DVD set released that I'll definitely buy (most weeks I'm lucky enough to avoid spending money on DVDs), but this is one of those weeks. 'Mad Men' is one of those shows that I'll buy the DVD for no question. In fact, when they release the inevitable 'Complete Series' in a few years (two years? five? seven?), I'm going to buy that, too, even if I'm already buying the individual season sets.
I can't say I'm too interested in season 10 of '7th Heaven' though.
- '7th Heaven' - Season 10
- 'Father Knows Best' - Season 4
- 'Flashpoint' - Season 2, Vol. 1 (Canada)
We Give Thanks for Our 11 Favorite Thanksgiving Episodes

Whether it's the parades or football games or Charlie Brown cooking toast and popcorn, television is as much a part of Thanksgiving as the turkey and cranberry sauce. This year, we're giving thanks to some of our favorite TV holiday celebrations. It was supposed to be a top ten list, but just like with Thanksgiving dinner, we couldn't resist a little extra stuffing.

Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.I sometimes enjoy watching Judge Judy, but it's one of those shows that I can't possibly imagine owning the DVDs. Once is enough for me. But if you're really into the show, there's a 2-Pack set being released this week.
But I have to get the Get Smart DVDs at some point. That's the only show being released that I have any interest in.
- The Cleaner - Season 1
- Corner Gas - Season 6
- Danny Phantom - Season 3
- Father Knows Best - Season 3
- Get Smart - Season 3
Greatest TV Dads
Real-life dads are sometimes preoccupied with their careers and distracted by life's many complications. Happily, on TV, all dads have plenty of quality time to share with their kids, while dispensing encouraging words and occasional tough love. Maybe that's because TV dads never spend much time at work. (We're pretty sure everyone's fathers would sign up for that!) Step into the wonderful make-believe world where every day is Father's Day, and join us as we count down our 20 favorite TV dads.
Chuck: Chuck Versus the DeLorean
(S02E10) Where are the Jim Andersons and Steve Douglases of the world? In TV's yesteryear, you could count on the Father Knows Best and My Three Sons patriarchs to be there as positive role models and responsible parents. You can't say that about either Sarah's dad or Chuck's father, although at least in this the former showed up to visit his daughter. Jack Burton would never win a father of the year award, but he might qualify as a fun dad. Starting with a flashback (which reminded me of Shawn's memories on Psych), we quickly learned that Sarah was a grifter-child, lead astray by her charming, conman rogue of a dad, Gary Cole. Well, better a rogue con artist than another rogue spy.

Dexter: Father Knows Best
(S01E09) At this point I'm pretty convinced that it's impossible for this show to have a bad episode. In my opinion, this was probably the slowest episode of the season and it was still outstanding. I say "slow" because well... it was. It took the whole hour to reveal just a few tiny things that easily could have been cleared up in minutes. Not that these things weren't important. They are. It just felt a little drawn out to me.
The entire story of Dexter and his actual biological father really isn't all that essential if you think about it. The only purpose it served was to bring everyone together. This wasn't exactly your typical family get-together though.
Time honors Jane Wyatt
Earlier this week we told you that actress Jane Wyatt had passed away at the age of 96, and now Time magazine's Richard Corliss writes a beautiful, long appreciation of the actress.
Most TV fans only seem to think of her as the mom on Father Knows Best, and even then, as Corliss points out, many of them are confusing her with the actress who married Ronald Reagan, Jane Wyman. But she had an amazing depth to her body of work that not only spanned several decades in the movies, but an impressive stage resume as welll, including Clifford Odets' Night Music, Dinner At Eight, The Fatal Alibi (from Agatha Christie's The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, and Lillian Hellman's The Autumn Garden, where her costar was James Lipton from Inside The Actor's Studio(!)
But this isn't just a rattling off of her credits. Corliss had a personal connection to Wyatt after meeting her in 1987, where they got into a discussion of politics and race. It's well worth reading.
Jane Wyatt dead at 96
Although Jane Wyatt was in one of the most classic films of all-time, 1937's Lost Horizon, she will always be remembered as Robert Young's wife on Father Knows Best, which ran from 1954 to 1960.
Wyatt starred in many films in her seven decades of work, including Great Expectations, Gentleman's Agreement, See How They Run, Amelia Earhart, Superdome, and Tom Sawyer. She made tons of guest appearances on TV shows over the years, including Star Trek, St. Elsewhere, Alias Smith and Jones, Love, American Style, Marcus Welby, Studio One, Alfred Hitchcock, Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Hotel, and The Young Indiana Chronicles.
Wyatt died Friday of natural causes in Bel-Air, California. Except for a documentary in 1997, her last role was in the 1996 film Simisola.
Happy Father's Day! So, what are you watching?
It's Father's Day! Your wife and kids let you sleep late, and then presented you with a lovely breakfast. You took a leisurely shower, read an entire issue of Maxim on 'the throne' (you know what I mean!) and now you're comfortably snug in the recliner that faces your new 50-inch plasma television, with built in HDTV digital recorder. That's the one that your wife bought with the change she saved from the grocery money (no wonder you were eating tofu burgers the last few months).
So, what are you watching? Perhaps you're tuned into the U.S. Open or maybe the World Cup Championships. Or, you may be watching your favorite baseball team play on FOX, ESPN, or one of your digital cable (or satellite) channels. If you're not into sports, you may be watching a favorite show or DVD, such as Father Knows Best, Bachelor Father, Father Murphy, The Courtship of Eddie's Father, Wait Till Your Father Gets Home or Make Room For Daddy or Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy. Then again, if the family is out of the house, you may be watching porn.
So, let us know what's on your moving picture machine. And, if you did get a 50-inch HDTV plasma television, please let us know; we at TV Squad would like to come over, friend.
