Emmy Shocker: A Broadcast With Suspense and Surprising Wins
by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 19th 2011 12:45AM
Many Emmy pundits create lists of "should win" and "will win" picks every year. This year, it felt like many of the "should wins" did win. It made for -- and I can't believe I'm saying this -- a rather delightful Emmy broadcast.
Sunday's Emmy broadcast rewarded so many truly deserving and excited winners from shows like 'Justified,' 'Friday Night Lights,' 'Game of Thrones' and 'Downton Abbey' that it's hard to find much to complain about.
There were a few repeat winners this year, but there was also a lot of fresh blood and well-deserved recognition. When I think back on the broadcast, I won't think about the occasional dead spots, I'll think about Melissa McCarthy's surprise win, Margo Martindale's tears for her 'Justified' Emmy and Kyle Chandler's stunned speech after he won for his great work on 'Friday Night Lights.'
This Emmy broadcast gave some lovely recognition to people who truly deserved it, and Jane Lynch wasn't a bad host, either. All in all, what's usually a three-hour slogfest passed by relatively quickly and mostly painlessly this time around (the most painful part was that In Memoriam section, but more on that later).

Before either show has debuted, Fox has handed out additional script orders to new cartoons 'Allen Gregory' and 'Napoleon Dynamite.'According to Vulture, 'Gregory' received an order for six new scripts and 'Dynamite' got seven.
More script orders could happen this fall if Fox continues to like what it sees.
Look for 'Gregory' to premiere Oct. 30 after 'The Simpsons' traditional 'Treehouse of Horror' special. 'Dynamite' is set for mid-season.

What to Watch: TV Picks for July 4 - 10
by Stephanie Earp, posted Jul 4th 2011 10:39AM
Friday Night Lights - Wednesday July 6, 9PM ET/PT, Global/NBCThe series and season finale of one of the finest pieces of television ever made airs tonight. Like any other epic ending, there are engagements, reunions, job changes, and plenty of nods to the very first episode. Basically, you're going to need an entire box of tissue to get through this. In the end, you'll probably feel that each of the characters winds up where you'd hoped they would -- or at least that they made the best of things. The real tears come from realizing that from now on you have to live without them.

Chelsea Handler and 'Friday Night Lights' star Connie Britton got on like old chums on 'Chelsea Lately' (Weeknights, 11PM ET on E!).Britton, looking better than ever, dropped by the show to chat about the final season of the critically acclaimed drama, but the subject of conversation soon turned to Chelsea's favorite staff member, who may or may not be gay.
May Sweeps Bring Summer TV Blues
by Stephanie Earp, posted May 5th 2010 11:16AM
Welcome to the month of May, which songs and poems tells us is primarily responsible for bringing forth darling buds and spring flowers. Not a single epigram or aphorism mentions May Sweeps, when May pulls the curtain on the TV season that was, bringing many good things -- and plenty of crap things -- to an end.
Over the next 30 days or so, over 60 shows will say goodbye and leave the airwaves for an extended summer vacation, while others are saying a permanent goodbye. Once they go, TV will leave us with nothing but a smattering of viewing options. Faced with such a dearth -- especially once the hockey post-season is over -- my upstairs neighbors usually cancel their satellite subscription for the summer. Ay yai yai! This is crazy talk! I happen to share that satellite subscription with them and I now have to convince them that it's worth continuing to split the bill for the delight of a few summer series.
But look at what I have to work with:

Friday Night Lights - Friday May 7, 8 pm, NBC
The opening episode of season four of this epic and beautiful series is called 'East of Dillon' and finds our favourite coach looking over his lot at East Dillon High, the school that time forgot. As Coach Taylor comes to terms with coaching a team without any of the advantages money can buy, his wife Tami is trying to deal with a new atmosphere at Dillon High. The tension between the haves and the have-nots is mounting. Meanwhile, Matt, Tim and the rest of the kids try to figure out what's left when football is over. 'Law & Order' Again? Here Are 10 Better Ideas for You, NBC
by Stephanie Earp, posted Apr 20th 2010 7:51PM

I remember when 'Law & Order: SVU' debuted, there were a lot of joking articles asking what would be next, 'Law & Order: Pet Detectives'? There were also questions about how many of these shows an audience could really take, and so on and so forth, with the same humor (if you can call it that) applied to the 'CSI' and 'NCIS' franchises as they came along.
Well guess what, people? 'Law & Order' is doing it again. NBC has greenlit a fourth version of 'L&O' -- set in L.A. -- for a fall debut. The original and 'SVU' are also looking good for renewals, while 'Criminal Intent' airs on cable network USA and on NBC.
My mind is boggled by this news. At this point, when I watch 'L&O' it has the same sort of nostalgic feeling I used to get from old episodes of 'Little House on the Prairie'.

'Friday Night Lights' Season 4 Trailer (VIDEO)
by Allyssa Lee, posted Apr 19th 2010 7:26PM
Clear eyes, full hearts can't lose. And neither can 'Friday Night Lights.' The critically acclaimed, woefully underwatched drama returns to NBC on May 7, and the network is heralding its comeback with a three-hanky trailer.
Sure, DirecTV subscribers have already witnessed the fourth season come and go. But for those of you who have been waiting a small eternity for the network airing of the series -- which revolves around high school football in Dillon, Texas -- here's a telling glimpse at what's to come.

TV 101: My Strange Hate For The Word-Of-Mouthers
by Jay Black, posted Apr 14th 2010 11:02AM
'Treme' premiered this week, but I was traveling and couldn't watch it. My plan had been to use HBO Go, but apparently "high speed internet" in Nacogdoches, TX really is just a system of tubes in the ground. The only site I could reliably connect to was a wholesale belt-buckle emporium. Not seeing the show isn't a worry; 2010 might not have flying cars, but damned if we don't have a plethora of options for watching a show we missed. I'll eventually find it online, on demand, or on one of the approximately 419 identical HBOs that all have different names for some reason.
The only real worry I have is that if I wait too long to watch 'Treme', it'll be 'Friday Night Lights', 'The Wire' or 'Arrested Development' all over again. I'm scared that the word-of-mouthers will find out I'm not watching and they'll start annoying the living hell out of me.
Will 'Damages' Wind Up on DirecTV like 'Friday Night Lights'?
by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 3rd 2010 3:35PM

There's good news and bad news regarding the Glenn Close legal drama 'Damages.' The bad news is that FX has real concerns about picking up the show for another season because of the cost. The good news is that Sony has turned to DirecTV to co-broadcast 'Damages.'
If this sounds like a paradigm you've heard before, you have. Currently, DirecTV shares the broadcast rights to 'Friday Night Lights' with NBC. That's how the Peabody-award winning program has remained on the air.
The fourth season of 'Friday Night Lights' has already run on DirecTV's Channel 101 -- a fantastic season by the way -- and NBC will give present the same episodes again for a much larger audience when the show premieres on May 7. (Of course, NBC could have chosen a night other than Friday -- one of the least watched nights of the week -- but there are fans out there waiting for this quality TV show.)
