Jerry Seinfeld Gets Madonna for 'The Marriage Ref'

by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 14th 2010 1:00PM
the_marriage_ref_jerry_seinfeldThis is rich. One of the celebrity judges on Jerry Seinfeld's new reality show, 'The Marriage Ref' will be Madonna. That's right. Madonna. How funny is that? For advice on dancing or pop sings or shocking the public or even cone-shaped bras, Madonna would be the authority to go to. However, is she really the person you'd go to for marital advice?

Still, it's a big time booking for Seinfeld's new show. She's a star. And when you consider that Alec Baldwin is another choice for marriage judge, the requirement for appearing on the show is not personal success with marital relations. Lately, Alec Baldwin has been the poster boy for how not to handle joint custody of a child post-divorce!

TV Squad: The Week Ahead

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 14th 2008 8:04AM

Emmy AwardOur Monday morning roundup of a half dozen things TV Squad readers - and TV fans in general - will be talking about this week.

1. Emmy nominations. If Moonlight and Jericho aren't nominated for every award, fans are gonna be pissed. (Thursday at 8:30am on E!, ABC, CBS, and NBC. We'll also have live blog coverage here!)

2. Season premieres of Monk, Psych, The Closer, and Saving Grace. Remember when summer was all about reruns? (The Closer and Saving Grace premiere tonight on TNT, while Monk and Psych premiere Friday on USA.)

3. The Gong Show. A remake of the classic show that has three judges choosing the very few talented performers out of dozens of terrible ones. Wait, that sounds like American Idol. (Thursday at 10 on Comedy Central.)

4. TV Squad reports from the TCA tour. Follow us here and on Twitter. All the hip kids are doing it!

5. It's Star Trek Week here at TV Squad. We'll all be dressed as our favorite character as we post reviews, lists, and essays about the original series.

6. Mad Men marathon. The second season starts on July 27, so grab your Lucky Strikes and some bourbon and settle in for an all-day season one marathon. (Sunday starting at noon on AMC.)

GSN celebrates Chuck Barris

by Adam Finley, posted Dec 3rd 2006 3:02PM

chuck barrisYou'll notice the date on the press release I'm linking to is November 20. Sorry about the late post, but I got a little sidetracked by the holidays and then got sick, so just GET OFF MY CASE ALREADY!

Sorry about that, I must have some kind of chemical imbalance or something. I'll try not to lash out so much. Anyway, GSN is airing a special about Chuck Barris on December 10 at 8 pm titled Chuck Barris: My Life on the Edge. Many of us remember Barris as the host of the Gong Show, but he was also a producer for the show, not to mention for shows such as The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game. In his own way, Barris pioneered what would eventually become a television staple: real people making asses of themselves for the amusement of both the home and studio audience. Barris also wrote a book, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, in which he claimed to be a CIA assassin while also working on his game shows. The documentary will feature an interview with the man himself, as well as George Clooney, who directed the film adaptation of Barris' book, and celebs such as Jamie Farr and Phyllis Diller.

Gene, the machine who dances

by Adam Finley, posted May 7th 2006 1:02PM

gene gene the dancing machineHey, are you enjoying your Sunday? Yeah, me neither. This is always the most boring day of the week. There's usually nothing good on television during the day, and once you've come home from church, done the New York Times crossword puzzle, and swiped the last jelly donut, there's not much to do except sit around and paint your toenails. Or, you could take a lesson from Gene Patton and dance like there's no tomorrow. While fighting off the boredom that is a part of every Sunday, I found a great classic clip from The Gong Show of Gene Patton, a stagehand on the show better known as "Gene Gene the Dancing Machine." In this clip, Gene spreads the disease known as "happy feet" throughout the studio. Tragically, Patton lost both his legs in 2001 to diabetes. Regardless, I think he'd still tell you to cut a rug, no matter how bad you are (just watch Chuck Barris). If this doesn't make you get up and dance, or at least stare at your computer screen with your mouth agape, then I don't know what else I can do for you. Anyway, enjoy the clip after the jump.
