Helen Mirren: Better Roles for Actresses Reflect Women's Real-World Progress (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 31st 2011 3:15PM
Helen Mirren on 'The Early Show''Early Show' (weekdays, 7AM on CBS) co-anchor Erica Hill tried not to use the world "old" during her interview with Helen Mirren, but the actress wouldn't let her. Speaking about Mirren's role as a retired Mossad agent in her new film 'The Debt,' Hill said it used to be tough for women to find good, meaty roles, especially actresses later on in their careers.

"You mean an old woman, is that what you mean?" joked Mirren. She then went on to credit the greater variety of roles available to female actors to the fact that three generations of women have risen through the ranks in various professions.

"Now we have all of those women, they're all in their 50s and their 60s and they are incredibly powerful in the world," said Mirren. "And people are looking at that going, oh, I see. Yes, women count. Women are powerful. Women have a voice. And as soon as you get that, it's reflected in the world of drama."

NBC's 'Prime Suspect' Reboot Gets Seal of Approval from Helen Mirren

by Catherine Lawson, posted Aug 3rd 2011 6:00AM
'Prime Suspect'Maria Bello has big shoes to fill when she debuts as the star of 'Prime Suspect' in the fall, so she'll doubtless be relieved to know that the rebooted version of the gritty cop drama has received the blessing of the writer and star of the British original.

Producers of the U.S. remake told reporters that while the new series is lighter and has more humor than the original, it has won the approval of series creator Lynda LaPlante and star Helen Mirren.

Executive producer and writer Alexandra Cunningham ('Desperate Housewives') said that LaPlante had written to them approving their updated concept of the series.

"She couldn't be happier that Maria is shouldering the character ... She is happy it is being modernized, and there's nobody better to do it than Maria. And Maria reminds people of Helen Mirren in her strength and her complete lack of vanity."

Helen Mirren Gets 'Body of the Year' Award (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 2nd 2011 4:15PM
Helen Mirren wins the LA Fitness Body of the Year poll on 'The Early Show'Helen Mirren is 66-years-old, but she beat out women decades younger, like Elle MacPherson, Pippa Middleton, and Jennifer Lopez, in an LA Fitness "Body of the Year" poll. 'The Early Show' (weekdays, 7AM on CBS) reported on the poll Tuesday, talking to people on the sidewalk in Times Square to see who they'd choose.

LA Fitness polled 2,000 people to come up with Mirren, who appeared nude at 58 in the movie 'Calendar Girls.' "She's got a fabulous body, she really does," said one man on the street, looking at a photo of Mirren in a bikini. "But I don't know, I'd still pick J-Lo over her."

A couple of younger women in Times Square also thought it was "awesome" that a 66-year-old woman could top the poll. "I think she has a better body than I do right now," said one. MacPherson, at 48, came in second, and Cheryl Cole was the only one in the top five under thirty. Who says LA is obsessed with youth?

Helen Mirren on 'Saturday Night Live''Saturday Night Live' (Sat., 11:30PM ET on NBC) opened our eyes to the magical, serene world of Helen Mirren's breasts. The Oscar-winning Dame was an incredibly good sport.

Nasim Pedrad asked, "Can I touch 'em?" Mirren replied, "Yes, of course." Over soaring music, Pedrad had visions of the sun rising, bunnies in tranquil fields, the moon landing, O.J. and the glove, 'Rudy', and Kerri Strug's one-legged vault.

Then she was surrounded by fluffy clouds and a robed, blond Adam Samberg. He informed her: "You're in a place that's much better than heaven. You're in Helen Mirren's titties."

Back in the 'SNL' studio, Kristen Wiig stormed into the room. "I'm having such a bad day," she said before burying her head in Mirren's cleavage. Ah, much better.

Helen Mirren, 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'Dame Helen Mirren is one of the most honored and awarded women in entertainment today. Shortly after having her hands and feet captured in cement outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre, she reminisced about some of her honors on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' (Weeknights, 12:35AM ET on NBC).

She remembered how, in the UK when she became Dame Helen Mirren, it involved not only dressing nicely, but also having lessons in proper etiquette and curtsying. It was a formal event at the palace. Another moment was her Oscar win in 2006 for 'The Queen.'

"I'm standing on the stage in front of all those movie stars holding an Oscar in my hand and they're all applauding and it's like this incredible dream come true," she said.

Created during the Nixon Administration, in existence longer than CNN and HBO, 'Masterpiece Theatre' began 40 years ago last week on public television stations. It earned its very first Emmy for Best Miniseries in its second season, for 'Tom Brown's Schooldays.'

That show was very much a part of the golden age of the miniseries in the mid-1970s, with such blockbusters as ABC's 'Rich Man, Poor Man' and 'Roots', and 'Masterpiece Theatre's own 'Upstairs, Downstairs'.

Jimmy Kimmel Confesses to Watching Helen Mirren Naked (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 9th 2010 6:40AM
Jimmy Kimmel Confesses to Watching Helen Mirren NakedOn the new 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (weeknights, 12AM ET on ABC), host Jimmy Kimmel welcomed 65-year-old actress Helen Mirren. And Jimmy had a confession for Ms. Mirren: He's seen her naked. (In a movie! He saw her naked in a movie.)

The topic came while up Helen was discussing her new film 'The Tempest,' which was shot in Hawaii. Jimmy asked Ms. Mirren if she had ever been to Hawaii before. It turned out that she had -- for her first major movie role, back when she was twenty-two years old. The film was a sexy drama where she played an artist's model.

Helen started describing one of the scenes: "And I'm swimming naked in the water ..." but Jimmy cut her off pretty quickly. A little too quickly, actually. "To be honest, I watched it online last night," he said. Then, the host added this: "Only the nude parts."

In Further Late Night Smooching News: Brian Austin Green Kisses Jimmy KimmelLate night talk show guests seem to be getting a little overly lusty these days. Already tonight, we've seen Dame Helen Mirren kissing Jay Leno. But that was nothing. On 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' (weeknights, 12AM ET on ABC), we experienced some full-blown guy-on-guy making out ... as Brian Austin Green gave Jimmy Kimmel a very hearty smooch on the lips.

And unlike Helen Mirren, Mr. Green didn't dilly-dally or procrastinate. No, his mind was made up as soon as he walked onto the stage. Brian strode confidently up to Mr. Kimmel, grabbed his cheeks -- then planted a big wet kiss right on his face.

After this, there was some debate about whether the pair had ever kissed before. Brian says they did; Jimmy says they didn't. We never fully resolved the issue, though we did learn this -- according to Brian, Jimmy Kimmel is a very tender lover: "You're passionate; you're a soft kisser." Aw. How ... sweet.

During her appearance on 'The Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC), the actress discussed her latest film role in the movie 'Red' -- an action flick where she gets to shoot a lot of machine guns.
