'I Hate My Teenage Daughter': You Can't Bully Us Into Laughing At This One

by Stephanie Earp, posted Dec 2nd 2011 1:00PM
Before I dive in to the meat of my column this week, a few caveats: 1. I understand that 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' is a sitcom and therefore not to be taken overly seriously. 2. Like everyone else, I adore Jaime Pressly and think she is enormously talented.

With that said, let me begin.

The premise of 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' is this: two moms -- best friends -- were nerds growing up, and they spoil their daughters in an attempt to provide them with the perfect youth they didn't have. Instead, they've raised monsters. The show gets going when both women are called into school because their daughters have locked a wheelchair-bound fellow student in the bathroom.

The Struggle to Discipline on 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' Premiere (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 1st 2011 1:00AM
'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' - 'Pilot''I Hate My Teenage Daughter' (Wed., 9:30PM ET on FOX) has been one of the worst-reviewed shows of the season, and yet FOX gave it easily their best time slot for its first several episodes. Coming out of 'The X Factor,' it's certain that plenty of people will at least sample the sitcom. But will they agree with the critics?

Our own Maureen Ryan called out the show for its incessant meanness to the two leads, which is entirely deserved, but I wasn't so quick to say there isn't hope for the show in the future. Yes, it needs to make some serious changes if people are going to want to watch, and that is the key phrase.

Jaime Pressly and Kate Finneran Preview 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' (VIDEO)

by Stephanie Opella, posted Nov 28th 2011 6:00PM
Jaime Pressly and Katie Finneran, the stars of the new Fox sitcom 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter,' stopped by 'Good Day LA' (weekdays, 9AM PT on Fox) to preview their show, which premieres on Wednesday at 9:30 PM ET. The two play best friends who were bullied in high school, and now as grown-up single moms are horrified to find they've raised their daughters to be just like the mean girls that used to torture them.

Pressly described the dynamic between the mom and daughter characters. "Growing up, we clearly were not in the 'in' crowd and we were not the 'cool peeps' either so we want our kids to have everything we never did." Finneran added, "We're just trying to get their love. Win their love, buy their love, steal their love."

What to Watch: TV Picks for November 28 - December 4

by Stephanie Earp, posted Nov 28th 2011 10:42AM

I Hate my Teenage Daughter - Friday December 2, 9PM ET/PT, Global and Wednesday November 30, 9:30 PM ET/PT, Fox

Well now, this is a strange time of year to debut a new show. The fact that Fox has moved the debut of this comedy around could be a sign they don't have a ton of faith in it, or it could mean nothing at all. With Jaime Pressly ('My Name is Earl') in a lead role, it's bound to have some attitude. She plays one of two moms who discover that their pampered kids have turned into bullying, spoiled mean girls. I think this premise has a ton of potential actually -- I just hope the script has more subtlety than the title.

Mark Consuelos Talks 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter' and Kelly's Next 'Live' Co-Host (VIDEO)

by Stephanie Opella, posted Nov 23rd 2011 11:00AM
Mark Consuelos came on 'Good Day NY' (weekdays, 9AM ET on Fox) to talk about his new Fox sitcom called 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter,' and to speculate on who his wife Kelly Ripa's new 'Live' co-host will be.

In 'I Hate My Teenage Daughter,' he plays a Spanish teacher who asks Jaime Pressly's single-mom character Annie out on a date. Greg Kelly was interested in the possible sexual tension on set, and asked, "When you kiss somebody who's not related to you, it's hard to not start feeling something, right?" Consuelos laughed and used his Ripa as an example of how professional on-screen kissing works, saying "She kissed Regis a lot on that show. I can guarantee you she was feeling nothing." Somewhere, the Reeg shed a lonely tear.

Warning! The 10 Least Promising Shows for Fall

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 19th 2011 10:00AM
Your time is valuable, and you don't want to spend it on shows that are either outright awful or seriously flawed, am I right?

That's the idea behind the following list of iffy and/or terrible new TV shows. They pay me to watch this stuff so you don't have to, and the goal here is to steer you away from fall programs that have awkward premises, wrongheaded casting or sub-par execution of decent ideas.

But never fear, I'll provide descriptions of each comedy and drama as well, on the off chance that you really want to check them out.
