Best TV of the '00s: Celebrities

by Danny Gallagher, posted Dec 30th 2009 2:02PM

More of our best of the decade coverage, which started on Tuesday. You can read the other posts at the link above. Here, we talk about a very aught-like phenomenon: the cult of celebrity.

There is no clearer metaphor for the concept of being a celebrity than the Hollywood Walk of Fame. You work hard to chase your dream and achieve a career for yourself by making your name known to the masses of the universe.

Then when you've grabbed that star and become a regular fixture in the flash bulb of the press' cameras, how does the public honor your tireless toil and efforts? They throw you down on a sidewalk and walk all over you.

In the Aughts, however, a new celebrity oozed out of the primordial muck. A celebrity that still suffered the slings and arrows of the tabloid press and a complete loss of the right to privacy, but achieved their stardom by simply cutting out all that pesky hard work and tireless effort nonsense. These are the celebrities who became famous by simply because they were famous.

Stephen Baldwin Quits 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here'

by Katy Kroll, posted Jun 23rd 2009 5:00PM
Being a man of faith, Stephen Baldwin did all he could to stay positive in the jungles of Costa Rica on 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here.' But, in the end, he threw in the towel with less than a week left.

During the course of the show, "Stevie B" paired with John Salley on several challenges, baptized Spencer Pratt in the river and generally tried to keep the peace within the camp.

Stephen dished to AOL TV via conference call about why he dropped out, what he really thought of his fellow campers and if he'd be into appearing on another reality show. -- By Katy Kroll

Janice Dickinson and Holly Montag Voted Off 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here'

by Katy Kroll, posted Jun 19th 2009 7:30PM
This week on 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here,' Janice Dickinson and Holly Montag got the boot, leaving six stars to duke it out in next week's finals.

As the younger sister of Heidi from 'The Hills,' Holly surprised the rest of the camp when she came in as a replacement after Heidi and Spencer Pratt left the show for good. She quickly proved to be more resourceful than her sibling -- and played well with the others. She even cozied up to Sanjaya Malakar, sparking rumors of a romance.

Janice, on the other hand, rubbed everyone the wrong way -- name-dropping, stealing things, eating everyone else's food and urinating on the ground right next to her bed.

Holly and Janice spoke to AOL TV via conference call about what really went on in the jungle, their thoughts on Heidi posing for Playboy and who the most annoying camper was. -- Katy Kroll

5 Questions With: Daniel Baldwin

by Katy Kroll, posted Jun 12th 2009 8:00PM
As the older brother of Stephen Baldwin, Daniel had his work cut out for him when he joined 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here' late in the game as a replacement after Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt first split. After just one week on the show, though, Daniel got the boot.

While in the Costa Rican jungle, Daniel ate cow tongue, got in Janice Dickinson's face and cracked jokes with his bro, generating laughs and winning over fans. But it wasn't enough to keep him on the show.

Daniel spoke to AOL TV via conference call about what he expected from jungle life, what the real deal is with Janice and whether Spencer might actually be coming back one more time. -- Katy Kroll

Heidi Pratt tortured on reality TV show

by Brad Trechak, posted Jun 8th 2009 8:17AM
SpeidiIt's a dream come true for everybody like myself that utterly, utterly hates reality television. Heidi Pratt had to be rushed to the hospital for being "tortured" on the reality television show I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here.

First, who decided that Spencer and Heidi Pratt would be called "Speidi?" It sounds like the nickname for Spider-Man, only misspelled. Most likely it's the working of a really bad publicist who wants them to be the next "Brangelina" or "Bennifer" or something like that.

Second, given the problems the couple has already had with NBC regarding this show (like quitting and then coming back), this sounds like a ploy to not actually do anything while collecting a paycheck (something they got ample practice with in The Hills).

I would also like to add that it's probably even worse torture for the viewer to simply watch them on television than anything NBC put Heidi through.

5 Questions With: Angela V. Shelton

by Katy Kroll, posted Jun 5th 2009 5:30PM
As one-half of the comedy duo Frangela, Angela V. Shelton is always attached at the hip with best friend Frances Callier. But the pair was broken up Thursday night when Angela got booted off 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here.'

During her brief time on the show, Angela had an altercation with Spencer Pratt when he knocked a water bottle out of her hand; run-ins with spiders, snakes and rats; and drank a milkshake made out of cow intestines.

As the first to get voted off by viewers, Angela spoke to AOL TV via conference call about life in the Costa Rican jungle, what goes on behind the scenes and what the real deal is with Spencer and Heidi Montag. – By Katy Kroll

Judge says 'whoa' to Blago's show, but does that stop him? Hell no

by Danny Gallagher, posted Apr 24th 2009 6:07PM
Rod Blagovejich promoting Part of me is pleased that a federal court judge told the former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich to stay put when NBC asked him to join their latest celebrity grovel-fest.

He's continuing to grab any media time he can long after the media forgot how to pronounce his last name by promoting the new I'm a Celebrity...Get Me a New Agent Out of Here. And despite my convictions to the contrary, another part of me wishes he would get more.

Mind you, this is the very dark part of me that giggles when elderly people fall and wishes there was a semi-pro "Scarin' Babies League."
