by Aimee Deeken, posted Apr 15th 2010 8:27AM
Coma Agent on 'In Plain Sight'Sometimes working in witness protection takes a lot of patience and time -- like "three years, five months and 16 days." That's how long an agent on 'In Plain Sight' (Wed., 10PM ET on USA) has been in a coma, and the WITSEC team have been protecting him ever since, in hopes he'll wake up to give case-closing testimony.

Five Ingredients That Make USA Network Shows Work

by Rich Keller, posted Apr 14th 2010 3:11PM
The character-driven shows of USA Network...'Burn Notice,' 'Royal Pains,' and 'Psych'
A while back, while announcing the season premieres for 'Burn Notice' and 'Royal Pains', I briefly mentioned the reason why these original USA network programs, as well as their other offerings, work so well. As I thought about it some more, I realized that it wasn't just the focus on characters and the mix of comedy and drama that made these shows click with audiences. There was more to it. In fact, three more 'its' to make a TV Squad list. How's that for ironic!

So, if you'll indulge me for a moment, here are the five things that make USA network shows resonate with viewers.

1. Actual character-driven shows -- When USA uses the tag line "Characters Welcome" they aren't kidding. Every original program since 'Monk' has been character driven. They haven't relied on special effects, or musicals, or unanswered questions that, when answered, produced more unanswered questions. It's characters that drive the shows and move them forward.

'In Plain Sight' - 'When Mary Met Marshall' Recap

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 8th 2010 12:32AM

In its third season, 'In Plain Sight' has become one of the best dramas on cable. In a pool that includes 'Mad Men,' 'Burn Notice,' 'Breaking Bad' and 'Justified,' to name a few, that's some damn good company.

Granted, 'In Plain Sight' isn't as lofty as some of those others, but the characters are sharp, the writing is excellent for this genre, and it's a show that you can look forward to watching each week. Try saying that about some network dramas. More on tonight's episode and remembering when Hello, Kitty rings were cute, after the jump.

by Aimee Deeken, posted Apr 1st 2010 5:20AM
Donnie Wahlberg on 'In Plain Sight'On last night's season premiere of 'In Plain Sight' (Wed., 10PM ET on USA), Donnie Wahlberg guest starred as a father in witness protection who isn't afraid of a little revenge.

When his teenage son is beaten, Donnie hunts down the assailant and threatens to shoot him, an action he's apparently familiar with. I.S. Marshal Mary Shannon (Mary McCormack) interrupts the proceedings, but has a different type of vengeance in mind ...

'In Plain Sight' - 'Father Goes West' Recap (Season Premiere)

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 1st 2010 1:52AM
in_plain_sight_mary_marshall_usa(S03E01) As originally planned, this season opener of 'In Plain Sight' was supposed to have run last season, but when Mary was shot and left clinging to life, USA Network and all the other brainiacs involved with the show decided to give us a cliffhanger. Not that there was ever really any doubt that Mary would survive, because without Mary in the middle, there's really no show.

Nevertheless, it was refreshing to see the new season kick off with Mary not clinging to life, but instead being the world's worst patient. More on her return to active duty and Marshall's green cashmere scarf and cheese danish theories after the jump.

How USA Network Found its Groove

by Gary Susman, posted Mar 31st 2010 12:00PM
How did USA become basic cable's most popular channel? They found a formula that works, and they stuck with it.

This week sees the season premieres of USA's 'Law & Order: Criminal Intent' (Tuesday's debut, introducing a new detective played by Saffron Burrows, marks the beginning of season 9) and 'In Plain Sight' (starting its third season on Wednesday). Both series feature USA doing what it does best: offering quirky crimefighters who nail bad guys even as their own lives are falling apart.

What to Watch: March 31

by Kim Potts, posted Mar 31st 2010 6:00AM
'In Plain Sight' (10PM, USA) season 3 premiere
As you might have guessed (since the show is continuing), Mary survived that season finale shooting. But the downtime and the pain it's caused her have made her angrier than ever, which sends her and Marshall on the hunt for the guy who pulled the trigger the minute she gets out of the hospital. The witness protection duo is also pulled into a drama with one of their favorite witnesses, a Boston man (guest star Donnie Wahlberg) who's trying to leave his criminal past behind him as he, his son, his new wife and her son try to operate a local diner. But when the son falls in with the wrong crowd, he threatens not only his own future, but the lives of everyone in his family. As for Mary, she's gonna get her man, but only after finding out that there's an upside to her on-the-job injury.

Preview of 'In Plain Sight's' March 31st Premiere

Spring is definitely on the way, and not just because we'll be spring forward with the clocks this weekend. No, it's on TV that spring is busting out all over. 'Army Wives' is returning with a new season, 'Glee' is coming back to finish this season, even 'Friday Night Lights' will finally commence on NBC -- after already having a complete run on DirecTV. One of the premieres that's got me intrigued is the March 31st 'In Plain Sight' on USA Network.

Big Name Stars Coming to 'In Plain Sight'

by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 19th 2010 11:01AM
in_plain_sight_mary_mccormack_frederick_wellerLast night during 'Burn Notice,' there were promos for 'In Plain Sight' and it got my heart pumped just to hear Mary McCormack's voice again. Hooray, Mary's back. And so is 'In Plain Sight,' one of the most improved series on cable in its sophomore run last season. The new season kicks off on March 31 on USA Network, and 'In Plain Sight's' lined up some big stars as guests.

The top of the list is Allison Janney. They're not saying if it's more than a single episode -- here's hoping -- but Allison will be a playing a "newly appointed U.S. Marshal who clashes with Mary." If you remember Janney and McCormack in the last couple of seasons of 'The West Wing,' this should be a great reunion.

USA wants more White Collar

by Allison Waldman, posted Dec 20th 2009 11:41AM
white_collar_bomer_dekayFile this under the "I was expecting nothing less" category. USA Network has ordered a second season of White Collar, the Matthew Bomer caper drama. The announcement was made not via a press release, but using Twitter. Welcome to the new reality. Jeff Eastin, White Collar's creator, tweeted the news: "Congratulations to the best cast and crew on television."

This makes total sense for USA. With Monk having ended its run this month, White Collar can now fill the bill joining Psych, Burn Notice, In Pain Sight and Royal Pains as the net's original series. How ironic that this NBCU network is doing a better job with original programming than NBC proper?

How do you think Monk will end?

by Allison Waldman, posted Nov 29th 2009 3:02PM
trudy_monk_usa_kissThe other night, USA Network broadcast part one of the Monk finale. In that next to last episode, many storylines were presented for the possible big finish this upcoming week. And it could be a potentially whopper of an ending. In my review, I speculated a little about what may be coming, and the comments have been flying in to TV Squad with viewers sharing their thoughts. That's got me thinking... what else might be at play?

Tony Shalhoub was interviewed about the end of Monk and it was interesting that as an actor, he waited till he filmed the end before learning Monk's fate. He said, "I think it's a good send-off. At the beginning of the season, the writers asked me if I wanted to know how everything [ended] and I said, if it was okay with them, I'd rather wait."
