Letterman Pays Tribute to Art Donovan in Super Bowl Ad

If you were watching carefully during the now-momentous Letterman/Oprah/Leno promo for the 'Late Show' that aired during the Super Bowl, you'll notice that Dave was not wearing an #18 Peyton Manning Colts jersey, like he did in the 2007 promo with Oprah that kicked off this series. Instead, he wore a #70 Colts jersey, a number which is not on the team's current roster.
When I saw the promo for the tenth or eleventh time (for some reason, I still get a kick out of it), I vaguely recalled that #70 was the number for Art Donovan, a Hall of Fame defensive lineman for the then-Baltimore Colts in the '50s and '60s. He was also a frequent TV presence in the '80s and '90s, telling hilarious stories about his playing days on Letterman's shows, as well as many others.
Richard Roeper wondered this, too, and confirmed it in his column this morning. See what happens when you follow up a notion with a simple Google search?
More on Donovan, including video, after the jump.
Super Bowl Gets Best Numbers in 23 Years
It looks like a lot of people were curious to see if the New Orleans Saints could beat the Indianapolis Colts in their first Super Bowl appearance (spoiler: they did). Or maybe they just wanted to see if Abe Vigoda was still alive or what a bunch of guys walking around in their underwear looked like. Either way, the CBS broadcast of the game got the best household numbers in 23 years, up 10% from last year's game that...well, no one really remembers who played last year. That's pretty good considering there wasn't a nipple in this year's game.
It's not hard to see great ratings for the game most years though. TV networks usually don't air much opposite them. Last night, for example, ABC and FOX ran repeats of their comedies while NBC had repeats of 'The Biggest Loser.'
Super Bowl Live Blog at Asylum
If you're looking for a fun way to enhance your Super Bowl XLIV viewing experience, our own Danny Gallagher will be live blogging the game over at Asylum. Danny has a vested interest in the game, since he grew up in New Orleans and is super excited to see his hometown team, the New Orleans Saints, bring home the Vince Lombardi trophy. After all, it's been 43 years since they've made a Super Bowl appearance. It's time, people. The Indianapolis Colts will just have to try again some other year.
Danny will also be Livetweeting Super Bowl Sunday at Asylum starting at 6PM ET, along with Asylum and NPR contributor Renny MacKay. You can join in that conversation by using the #AsylumSB hashtag. In fact, check it out now, because the conversation has already started. What did we do before live blogging and tweeting? We led such lonely, distant lives. But not anymore!
Go Danny! Go Saints!
Drew Brees Has One Commercial That's Better Than Peyton Manning's
With the Super Bowl just a couple of days away, there's been tons of attention paid to both the New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts players. And it's all justifiable. After all, they've made it to the ultimate NFL game. But when it comes to commercials, the king is most likely Peyton Manning. Whether it's "Cut that meat" or Sony TVs or licking the inside of Oreo cookies with his brother Eli, Peyton has the upper hand on the entire NFL in ads.But wait, there is another quarterback in the Super Bowl, Drew Brees, and he has at least one commercial that ranks right up there with the funniest stuff either Manning has done. It was a 'This is SportsCenter' promotion for ESPN.
CBS Sports Expects 100 Million Super Bowl Viewers
CBS expects Sunday's Super Bowl XLIV to be the most watched television program in history. And the network is looking to make a mint on the big game after managing to sell every available ad slot for the broadcast. The problem is a couple of those ads were sold to odd buyers when you consider that this is supposed to be a massive entertainment event. People are supposed to have fun watching the game they've waited all season to see. It's a reach to ask them to think about heavy socio-political issues.
The network estimates more than 100 million viewers will tune in this weekend when Peyton Manning (right) and the Indianapolis Colts take on Drew Brees and the upset-minded New Orleans Saints. The Saints look to be the sentimental favorite as the city struggles to rebuild from Hurricane Katrina.
Meanwhile, the Colts are playing in their second Super Bowl in the last three years -- having beaten the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI.
Sunday's SNL special to feature a healthy dose of Peyton Manning
Expect to see a lot of Peyton Manning this Sunday on SNL Presents: Sports All-Stars, according to Will Forte and Jason Sudeikis. Forte and Sudeikis are hosting the two-hour prime time show (Jan. 31, 9 p.m. EST) as Twinkle and Stink, their ESPN Classic sports announcer characters. All-Stars will feature the best of the show's sports-related sketches from the vaults. In a conference call with media earlier this week, Forte in particular was impressed with Manning, who will quarterback the Indianapolis Colts in the Super Bowl next week against the New Orleans Saints.
Saints' historic win also kicked Seinfeld's behind
Just how historic and awesome was the New Orleans Saints' first NFC championship? It not only toppled what could be the final chapter of legendary quarterback Brett Favre's NFL history, but it also toppled one of the most epic and legendary final chapters in television's history. Last Sunday's squeaker between the Saints and the Minnesota Vikings on Fox garnered 57.9 million viewers, which tops the Seinfeld finale in 1998.
One can only imagine what the viewership would be if the Saints beat the Indianapolis Colts and take home the Vince Lombardi trophy at Super Bowl XLIV. I mean, other than a special post-game appearance of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (I say that, of course, as a long time and beloved hometown fan of the Black and Gold. Who dat!).
Dungy in, Bettis Out at NBC's Football Night in America
NBC continues to play musical chairs on Football Night in America, the network's Sunday night blanket coverage of the NFL including a prime time game. (I'm surprised NBC hasn't added Jay Leno to the broadcast!) The latest change is an interesting one: Super Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy is joining the panel and former running back Jerome Bettis is out. What's interesting is that they are two completely different types. Bettis, whose nickname is "The Bus," is well-known as the smiling winner from the 2006 Pittsburgh Steelers' Super Bowl team. He's loud, boisterous and a larger-than-life personality. Dungy, on the other hand, was the architect and head man for the 2007 Indianapolis Colts' Super Bowl championship. He is cerebral and thoughtful and the author of a bestselling memoir, Quiet Strength: The Principles, Practices, and Priorities of a Winning Life. You could say that the two men are the anti-thesis of each other, which is likely why NBC has made the switch.
FCC gets 150 complaints about the Super Bowl
The Federal Communications Commission got 150 complaints about the content of this year's big game. They centered on two events: one was the phallic imagery generated by Prince during his halftime show (pic on the right). Can you guess the other one?
Yup, that Snickers ad with the two guys kissing (Snickers has since pulled the commercial).
The Smoking Gun has the documents, and some of the complaints are hilarious. One viewer says that Prince's giant penis guitar shadow had a traumatic effect on his son: "[my son] hoped to be a quarterback and now he will turn out gay...thanks CBS for turning my son GAY." Another viewer said "God knows I didn't turn on the Super Bowl expecting to be tricked into watching gay sex," which makes me wonder where he usually goes to not be tricked into watching gay sex.
I wonder what these people think about football players slapping each other on the rear after good plays, and then taking showers together after a game. NAKED!

CBS: "Letterman and Oprah"
Hold everything! Here's my favorite ad of the day so far.
It shows Late Show host David Letterman and Oprah Winfrey sitting on a couch watching the game (Oprah's show is based in Chicago and Letterman is from Indianapolis), eating potato chips. I believe Letterman had his arm around Oprah. Awwwwwwww.
You don't see Letterman in many commercials, acting with his goofy side. And seeing Oprah in the ad with him, after the whole Oprah/Uma thing from years ago and her guest appearance on his talk show last year in 2005...just brilliant. I'd like to say right now that whoever thought of this ad should get a big raise. If Letterman or Oprah thought of it, well, no raise for them because they already make enough money.
I think I'd watch a Letterman/Oprah sitcom where they play a married couple.
Don't forget! We're covering the Super Bowl tonight
Well, not the game. I mean, really. But we'll be covering the new, expensive commercials that are going to debut tonight. Coverage begins around 6:30pm, right when the game is supposed to start, but there will be probably be an hour of player introductions, coin flipping, and steroid testing.
By the way, the pre-game coverage is taking place on CBS right now. It started a month ago.
'Idol' continues to crush Wednesday night competition
Once again, American Idol lived up to its reputation as a juggernaut -- or large, overpowering, destructive force -- by drawing more viewers during Wednesday's night telecast than all of the other major networks combined. According to recent Nielsen ratings, American Idol drew 36.9 million viewers total, leaving ABC, CBS, NBC and the CW Network all out in the cold. The highest-rated TV show of the season
So, what do you think it is?
Was it the debut episode of this season's American Idol? Was it the season opener of 24? Or maybe the half-season-ender of Lost a few months ago? The season opener of Grey's Anatomy?
Nope. The highest-rated TV show of the season so far was the third episode of Ghost Whisperer! OK, I'm kidding. The actual highest-rated show after the jump.
