It Takes a Thief

(S07E12) I had been really looking forward to this episode of NCIS ever since it was announced that Tony's dad -- the original Tony DiNozzo, Sr. -- would be on and played by veteran TV star Robert Wagner (Hart to Hart). Well, it was not a disappointment. Other than the fact that the mystery involving a couple of Saudi princes wasn't very complicated, it was a really good show. There's good casting and then there's great casting. NCIS has had a propensity for great casting when it comes to the father's of the core characters. Michael Nouri has been spot on as Ziva's autocratic Israeli father. Ralph Waite was a surprising, but superb, choice as Jethro's down to earth father.

Now, we've just heard the news that there's another pop coming to NCIS.

It's time for another TV list! Everybody loves lists, right? This one has AOL picking the best TV shows of the 1960s.

As usual, it's a list that will get the debate going. Shows that without a doubt deserve to be on the list: The Twilight Zone, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Star Trek, The Andy Griffith Show, I Spy, and Bewitched.

Shows that without a doubt don't belong on the list: The Flying Nun, Hogan's Heroes, and The Mod Squad. Sure, I enjoyed those shows when I was younger, but I really don't think they belong in the "best" category (I'll let you debate another show on the list, Batman - great or just "campy" great?)

In AOL TV's continuing countdown of the best TV shows of each decade, we travel back in time to the 1960s, when viewers were entertained by wacky sitcoms like 'Green Acres,' 'Bewitched' and 'The Addams Family,' a proliferation of Westerns that featured future superstars like Clint Eastwood and Michael Landon, variety shows like 'Laugh-In' and 'The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour' and James Bond-inspired spy shows like 'The Saint' and 'I Spy.'

Viewers were also into grittier fare like realistic cop dramas ('Ironside,' 'Adam-12') and war action series ('12 O'Clock High,' 'Combat!'), though there was plenty of classic sitcom fun on the airwaves, too, from 'The Andy Griffith Show' and 'The Dick Van Dyke Show' to 'Get Smart' and 'My Three Sons.'

I don't get RTN (Retro Television Network) where I live. If you go to their web site and scroll down, you'll see that the network isn't in every state yet. But it's something I'd like to see on my local cable system.

RTN is a channel that shows a lot of old TV shows. It's sort of what TV Land used to be, a long time ago, before they started to get into reality shows, movies, and Extreme Makeover.

The channel is still at a time in their history where they have the freedom to not only air cult-yet-mainstream shows like the original Battlestar Galactica, The Incredible Hulk, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Leave It To Beaver, and Magnum, P.i., they're also airing such shows as Delvecchio (!), It Takes A Thief (!), Kate and Allie (!), the original 50s version of Mike Hammer (!), Run For Your Life (!), and The Bold Ones (!). As you can see, this is one eclectic network. They also have original programming such as talk shows, RTN Mystery Theater, and Offbeat Cinema. Robin Leach is going to host a show on the network, too.

I think this is probably the 50th or 60th post about TV theme songs we've done here at TV Squad, either lists of our own or stories about other lists on the web. But it's one of the great all-time TV debates among fans so it's good to revisit the topic every few months.

Paste has the latest list, their 40 best TV theme songs of all-time. Oh, we could talk about this for hours (and we probably will), but there are four thoughts that come immediately to mind after reading all 40 choices:

Remember Susan Saint James? She was honored this week with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and it's about time, I say. The 61-year-old actress is pictured here, with husband Dick Ebersol.

California First Lady Maria Shriver was on hand to compliment Saint James for her decades of volunteer work to support the Special Olympics and people with disabilities.

Saint James told ET, "When your name gets called, it's indelible, it's permanent. It's just a compliment of the highest order."

So let's go back a few years to honor this talented actress (this is where David Letterman starts stroking his chin and the picture gets fuzzy)...

This is the type of news that makes me think a.) Hollywood doesn't know what its doing, b.) Producers have no imaginations, and c.) Big stars will do anything for a f***ing paycheck.

Will Smith, who did soooooo well bringing Wild, Wild West to the big screen a few years back, will take on the Robert Wagner role in an updated version of It Takes A Thief. Now, this was a very cool show. I loved it as a kid. But why do they insist on remaking these shows? It's not the premise/plot of a show that makes it great, it's the combination of a certain star at a certain time in TV history. (I've talked about this so many times on these pages I really don't have the energy to go into it anymore.)

I don't care who they have writing this or who they have directing it, I can tell you right now it's going to be lame. It has to be.
