'MythBusters' Apologize for Cannonball Accident

by Catherine Lawson, posted Dec 8th 2011 5:45AM
'Mythbusters' cannonball accidentYesterday came news that the 'MythBusters' team had accidentally fired a 30-lbs cannonball through a house. Although on the face of it, it seemed like a pretty funny story, more details have since emerged that show how lucky local residents were to escape injury.

According to 'The San Francisco Chronicle,'
the cannonball travelled straight through the Shetty family's house, exiting through the exterior wall of the master bedroom as mom Seema was napping in the room with her two year-old son. After traveling a total of 3,300 feet, the cannonball eventually came to rest in Satwinder Gill's minivan. She told ABC-7 News that "my husband and son were in the car five minutes before it happened."

'MythBusters' hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage -- who were not present when the accident happened -- travelled to Dublin, California to meet with the families affected by the accident and to apologize. Savage told 'The San Francisco Chronicle,' "It's a wake-up call. Honestly, the feeling of embarrassment is not something we're indulging in right now. We feel for the families and the people affected by this."

Andy Samberg On Staying Alive as Shark Week's Chief Shark Officer (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 29th 2011 9:05AM
Andy Samberg, Shark WeekAndy Samberg has a lot of weight on his shoulders as Shark Week 2011's Chief Shark Officer. But, just how did the 'Saturday Night Live' funnyman get this "jawesome" gig?

"I think I'm Chief Shark Officer for obvious reasons," Samberg said. "I love sharks, I'm a really bad swimmer, Justin Timberlake passed. What else? Mainly the third one."

In the exclusive video interview below, Samberg, while soaking wet and standing in the ocean, details his experiences as Chief Shark Officer.

"The worst thing about being Chief Shark Officer is that I had to go to the Bahamas! It doesn't smell like whiz or homeless people anywhere here," he joked. "I'm just so homesick. It's going to be so sucky when I have to go back."

Jamie and Adam Try to Dodge Bullets on 'Mythbusters' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jun 2nd 2011 1:40AM
'Mythbusters'If you're worried that a sniper might be targeting you, you may have tuned into this week's 'Mythbusters' (Wed., 9PM ET on Discovery) with a glimmer of hope in your heart. The gang decided to see if they could break the Hollywood myth of dodging bullets.

They set up a rig that would shoot a paintball at Jamie Hyneman from a close distance mere milliseconds after Adam Savage fires from a typical sniping distance. It's a good thing, too, as Jamie wasn't able to move fast enough until they reached a distance of 500 yards. Then, he was just able to dodge it.

At that distance and under those perfect circumstances, Adam declared that "There's just no way you could see [a sniper] fire from far enough away to give you a remote chance of dodging that thing." Myth busted, which means you're on your own with your sniper.

'MythBusters' Could Debunk Apollo Conspiracy Theory with Their Own Moon Landing (VIDEO)

by Jeremy Taylor, posted Apr 12th 2011 9:15AM
'Mythbusters' on 'Colbert Report'When 'MythBusters' duo Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman visited 'The Colbert Report' (weekdays, 11:30PM ET on Comedy Central), Stephen Colbert asked if there was any myth they would like to debunk but can't do so on their long-running Discovery Channel show.

"Well, we did a whole episode on busting the conspiracy theory that the moon landing was faked, and there are some people who are still unconvinced," Savage answered. "So we would love to -- if time, money were no object -- build a spaceship, go to the moon and come back with a piece of Apollo hardware -- all in one take."

Barack Obama Guest-Stars on 'MythBusters,' Wants to Learn About a Solar Death Ray (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Dec 9th 2010 5:45AM
Barack Obama Guest-Stars on 'MythBusters,' Wants to Learn About a Solar Death RayFirst 'The Daily Show,' and now this ... President Obama must have a thing for basic cable shows. The commander-in-chief appeared on the new 'MythBusters' (Wed., 8PM ET on Discovery). But what myth or secret would Obama ask to have exposed? The secret of balancing the budget? The myth that you can get Democrats and Republicans to work together? The legend that Abraham Lincoln hid gold under the White House floorboards? (Okay, we made that last one up.)

None of the above! Instead, Obama expressed a more unusual desire. "I'm a big fan of 'MythBusters,'" he said. When hosts Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage widened their eyes at this, the President said that the show made science "fun." "And occasionally, you blow things up," he added.

True, watching things get blown up -- or even get set on fire -- is cool. And so, Obama asked the hosts to research a solar heat ray for him -- which was ... an unexpected choice. A solar heat ray? ... Um, Mr. President? Are we planning on invading the North Pole or something?

'MythBusters' Dish On New Season, Fears & Things That Hurt Their Brains (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Aug 16th 2010 8:00PM
Few shows make me gasp, laugh, gag and cheer -- sometimes all in one episode -- more than 'MythBusters' (Wednesdays, 9PM ET on Discovery Channel). And I don't just love it for that mishmash of emotions; I watch it so religiously because I learn something new from every episode.

The gang is back soon with new episodes full of busting myths and going above and beyond with their experiments, all in the name of science. But with so many myths already tackled, will they ever run out? Don't count on it.

So how do you prove or disprove cold feet? Well, you do what scares you the most. And what, after all these years, could make the cast's and crew's brains hurt? Adam Savage, Jamie Hyneman, Kari Byron, Grant Imahara and Tory Belleci give me the scoop.

'MythBusters' Attempt to Light Match with Bullet From Gun (VIDEO)

by Donald Deane, posted Dec 29th 2009 8:22AM
Has 'MythBusters' run out of cool stuff to blow up and set on fire? It would appear so, as Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman set out to show whether it's possible to ignite a wooden match with a bullet fired from a gun.

After much trial and error, the special effects duo proves this is indeed possible. Now we can die happy.

Watch the video after the jump.

Prove your Mythbusters knowledge to the world or die trying

by Danny Gallagher, posted Dec 5th 2009 4:30PM
You've seen every Mythbusters episode the world has to offer. You have them all on a series of categorically detailed DVDs. You once turned down an opportunity to go out with Keira Knightley because you couldn't wait until the morning after to learn if a cannon-fired frozen chicken can penetrate a plane's cockpit window. But how well do you have them memorized?

Mental_Floss magazine puts your knowledge of the Mythbusters' mythbusting to the ultimate test with their "Myth...Busted?" quiz. Be warned. I scored an 8 out of 10 and the shame of defeat drove me to down an entire bottle of whiskey, disproving the myth that alcohol can't solve all of life's failures.

Set Visit: Mythbusters wraps seventh series of science gone mad

by John Scott Lewinski, posted Oct 3rd 2009 10:00AM
The Mythbusters crew hosts a set visit in San Francisco. The Mythbusters crew aren't scientists, but they sort of play them on TV -- submitting everything from movie stunts to common household sayings to proven analytic methods.

Of course, it's more fun to determine whether you can cut a tree in half with a machine gun than it is to test the effectiveness of a new polymer, so Mythbusters gets a TV show -- and your average scientists don't.

To celebrate Mythbusters' completion of its seventh series of episodes on Discovery Channel, series stars Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage hosted a set visit of their testing and production facilities in an industrial park just outside San Francisco's Mission District.

Hyneman led the tour himself through M5 Industries -- a former visual effects house turned production shop for the popular debunking series.

Mythbuster Adam Savage goes undercover at Comic-Con

by Danny Gallagher, posted Jul 28th 2009 10:02AM
Mythbusters' Adam SavageI imagine a lot of stalkers must love a place like Comic-Con. All of their most sought after celebrities are together in one place for easy pickings. It must be their Costco.

One star, however, decided to turn the tables on his fans and used his own costume to stalk and hunt down a few of his fans on the floor of this year's convention.

To make it even creepier, he dressed up like a clown. That slurping sound you hear is my spine falling out of its socket from uncontrollable shivering.

Background info on Mythbusters Jamie and Adam

by Brett Love, posted Sep 30th 2006 2:02PM
Jamie and Adam - MythbustersThe team at TV Squad scours all the corners of the net looking for interesting junk, so you don't have to. And that's how I found my way to The Christian Science Monitor. Not one of my usual haunts, but they have a really good article on Jamie and Adam from Mythbusters. I'm a fan of the show, but I never really knew much more about the two of them than what they have revealed on the show.

While not an in depth bio, we do learn some more details about the backgrounds of the pair. A couple highlights - Jamie ran away from home for six months when he was 14, making it halfway across the country. Previous to the M5 effects shop he also owned a pet store and a boat charter business in the Caribbean. And somewhere along the line he got a degree in Russian literature. Adam has worked as an animator, graphic designer, set designer, and actor. His father did animation for Sesame Street.

The article also gets into just how different the two are. So much so that Jamie comments "I wouldn't spend five minutes with Adam outside of work if I didn't have to." But it's clear that the two are enjoying what they are doing and respect each other for their unique talents. Worth a click if you are a Mythbusters fan. The new season of the show will begin airing in January.
