Proving that she lives the show every day for which she won an Emmy this year, Julie Bowen related the story about how her children have already broken the statue on 'The Tonight Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC). Apparently, it makes a great football tee.

It may have seemed bizarre, then, that Jay Leno wanted to talk about her time working on the syndicated show 'Acapulco H.E.A.T.' The series ran for two seasons in the mid-1990s and starred Fabio, who Bowen lamented she never got a chance to meet.

Half the fun of Emmy night is matching the actual winners to your picks -- especially if you picked 'Modern Family' to sweep pretty much every category in the first hour of the show. But the other half is hearing your favorite stars of the small screen get emotional, veer off script and say stuff that's unexpected, or at least unscripted.

There were plenty of surprising twists and turns at the 63rd Emmy Awards, and more than a handful of remarks to remember. From host Jane Lynch's (jokingly) bitter comments about drowning her sorrows in a tub of turkey meatballs to Peter Dinklage's endearingly odd shout out to his dogsitter, the best quotes of the night are right here.

(S01E20) I never got mortally embarrassed by my parents. I guess I always assumed that everyone else had them, so they understood. Or maybe I just saw too many television shows and movies about teenagers being horrified to be seen by other kids in the vicinity of those old people who brought them into the world. I don't know, though, if I could get even in quite the way that Claire did this week.

Hilarious but brutal.

On second thought, teenagers are horrible, manipulative, shallow little creatures. Claire did nothing wrong except maybe teach a little humility.

Perhaps not as to disrupt the 'Family' ties, Deadline.com is reporting that the cast ABC's hit comedy 'Modern Family' will maintain a level playing field and all six of its adult stars will enter their Emmy submissions in the supporting categories.

It was a move precipitated by the 'Family' patriarch Ed O'Neill, according to the report. Despite possessing the sitcom's biggest name when the series premiered last year, the former 'Married ... With Children' star felt that no one actor was bigger than another in this strong ensemble and opted to submit his name in the supporting category as if to prove it. The other adult regulars on the cast -- Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet -- are all expected to follow suit.

It's a challenge faced by really strong ensemble casts everywhere: Determining who gets put into lead categories, and who gets put into supporting come Emmy-submission time.

Certainly, it's a dilemma faced by ABC's 'Modern Family,' as the critically acclaimed freshman comedy boasts a clan's worth of award-worthy performers. According to the Hollywood Reporter, there are four different divide-and-conquer Emmy strategies being considered within the 'Family' camp: 1.) Submitting all six of the adult regular cast members (Ed O'Neill, Julie Bowen, Ty Burrell, Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet) in the lead category; 2.) putting them all in the supporting category; 3.) designating 'Family' patriarch O'Neill in the lead category and the rest in supporting, or 4.) submitting the "traditional" parents Bowen and Burrell in the lead categories, and the rest in supporting. (Guess this means there's no room at the awards show inn for Rico Rodriguez, who is hilariously on-point as man-child Manny.)

We live in a TiVo world, and its impact has been spilling out all over our favorite shows in the form of product placement. The judges on 'American Idol' drink out of huge Coke or Vitamin Water cups. The chefs on 'Top Chef' use Calphalon equipment, as all the logo close-ups tell us. The folks at the Buy More on 'Chuck' really love their Subway sandwiches.

We get it. It's the way of the TV world these days, as someone's got to the pay the freight in a world where you can zap a commercial by pushing a button.

But, when entire stories on shows play out like an ad for a product, then things have gone too far. Unfortunately, my favorite new show, 'Modern Family,' took things that step too far last night with their iPad-themed plot. It felt like one long Apple commercial. Never mind that the episode aired just in time for the device's release on Saturday; the iPad drove the plot rather than the plot necessitating the use of an iPad. And that's where the producers crossed the line.

(S01E19) One of the reasons that Cameron and Mitchell are so fun is that Cameron manages to be both the more flamboyant one, and he's clearly the more badass of the two, as well. Mitchell is always kind of whiny and too uptight with his little fists. Unfortunately, when his ineffectiveness as a tough guy leads him to think he's letting his daughter down as a father, Mitchell decides he needs to toughen up.

Phil's birthday celebration took up the bulk of the episode. Well, actually it was the build-up to his birthday celebration, but most of the events happened on that day. So how'd it go? Well, I'll say that I've had plenty of birthdays that went about as well as Phil's did.

I also taught my sister how to play chess, and she beat me ... that very game. That's right. Now, we were both still children, but come on! That's just ridiculous!

(S01E18) It's time to mix up the relationships and find out which ones work the best. My theory: they all do. Tonight, we got to see Cameron hit the town with Gloria, while Jay brought Manny along on his and Mitchell's regular astronomy evening. The new dynamics worked better than anyone could have expected.

Cameron's constantly sticking his foot in his mouth while in Gloria's company created so many moments of hilarity, I had to pause the show several times just to make sure I didn't miss anything.

The Dunphy family stayed at home, because their kids are like all of our kids and neglected to tell their parents about a couple of major things that needed to be done before school the next day. One was a diorama on the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh, while the other was a batch of cupcakes.

(S01E17) Dammit! Wives are more right than we'd like to admit, aren't they, guys? I was convinced Claire was completely overreacting to Phil's Faceook communications with his ex-girlfriend. My wife and I both have several people from our pasts that we talk to online, and it is completely innocent.

If anything, perhaps the events of this episode could be criticized by saying that they are promoting negative sexual stigmas attached to social networking sites. While the sites do have their dangers, they're certainly not worthy of fear-mongering.

But I'm not going to jump on that soap box. Instead, I'm going to say that this episode was absolutely brilliant. Everything from Flyza Minelli to "A little bit louder" was pitch perfect comedy. I laughed out loud more at this episode than I do entire seasons of most comedy series.

(S01E16) What are you afraid of? That was the question facing the three families that make up this exceptional comedy series. Whether it's a fear of roller coasters, tight places, passing your driver's test, getting asked to dance, or that your daughter isn't connecting to you, it's how we deal with our fears that defines us as people.

'Modern Family' actually surpassed itself in one regard this week. In 16 episodes, most of which were fantastic, this was the first one to choke out a genuine emotional response from me. Phil's closing monologue was touching, and touched on another fear that all parents face: the fear of your children growing up too fast. That, and the fear that they're going to kill someone in your car.

(S01E15) The myriad relationships and characters in 'Modern Family' make it the perfect show to spotlight all the difficulties one can face in love and romance. As Valentine's Day descends on our cast of characters, they each explore new ways to express how much they care about one another, and they each find challenges along the way.

Jay takes Gloria out for a romantic evening, though it's not the one she expects. Mitchell and Cameron, who've agreed to watch Manny for the evening, wind up helping him express his true feelings to the girl he pines for, after another boy took credit for his poetry and scored a date with her.

It's always interesting when a spouse tries to change things up in the romance department, especially when it turns into a hot mess. That's what happens when Claire ditches her entire outfit except her coat, all for Phil's benefit on 'Modern Family' (Wed., 9PM ET on ABC).

But, oh snap! Her coat gets caught in the escalator, and then things get really awkward when her dad is standing at the top, telling her to take her coat off, for cripes sake -- until he realizes she's completely naked underneath!

Note to Self: Avoid escalators if you're wearing only a coat.

(S01E14) Sometimes I wonder if I could just write up a review of 'Modern Family' by listing all of the great quotes that come out of this show. Line for line, this has to be one of the cleverest series on television today. Even the episode title, 'Moon Landing,' recalls a great moment.

The action this week was split between Jay and Cameron heading off to the gym to play racquetball, Mitchell helping Gloria with a traffic-related legal problem, and Claire's reunion with an old work colleague from before Claire became a stay-at-home mom. Minnie Driver was well cast as the friend, Valerie, but her performance was completely overshadowed by the brilliance of the episode itself.

(S01E13) As usual, there was a ton going on this week, with all three families dealing with different types of crises. Kristen Schaal (Flight of the Conchords) was in one of the more unusual guest roles I've seen in awhile. You can't really describe how she came to be on the episode without it sounding all kinds of creepy, and yet the show managed to avoid any of the cliche reactions to what happened.

The way they've handled Jay's reaction to and dealing with the ongoing situation of his son's homosexuality has also managed to avoid the trite and formulaic "tough guy" dads we're used to seeing. There's just something more authentic about all these relationships, and I think a lot of it is bucking expectations. Gloria's not a gold-digging foreigner, nor is she just looking for a green card marriage. She's a sweet and understanding woman who genuinely loves her husband and son. Maybe a little too understanding.

(S01E12) I want a dog butler now. Sofia Vergara managed to do so much with her simple reactions to this dog, and Jay's interactions with it, throughout this episode, she had me laughing without saying a word. In fact, this may have been one of the funniest episodes of Modern Family yet.

Misunderstanding was the theme for all three families this week. You had Gloria misunderstanding Jay and Barkley's relationship -- Barkley being the dog butler. Cameron's big heart led to all kinds of Latino insanity in their household, to Mitchell's horror, while it was Phil's fear of his wife that allowed several instances of misunderstanding in the saga of the big bare breasted tractor rider (*Ahem* It's a combine).
