Lee DeWyze Sets Record Straight on 'American Idol' Finale Absence, Roseanne Eyes TV Role and More

by Chris Harnick, posted May 27th 2011 12:00PM
Lee DeWyzeSo, did Lee DeWyze refuse to participate in the 'American Idol' finale or was he never asked?

According to Zap2It, 'American Idol' executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said DeWyze, winner of season 9, refused to participate in the finale.

But, DeWyze hit back on Twitter saying he was not asked to be involved ... until the last second. Producers asked him to present 'American Idol' season 10 winner Scotty McCreery with the trophy.

"I was not asked to be involved in the Finale. It wasn't until about 2 minutes before they announced that Nigel had approached me and asked if he could 'borrow' me for a second," DeWyze said on Twitter.

"I didn't feel a last second jump on stage was appropriate. It was Scotty's moment."

Lee DeWyze Gives a Performance Worthy of the Reigning Champ on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Mar 18th 2011 12:15AM
Lee DeWyze, 'American Idol'The Season 9 winner of 'American Idol' (Thu., 8PM ET on FOX) has struggled in the sales charts thus far with his debut post-'Idol' album 'Live It Up.' In fact, it premiered with the lowest sales of any prior winner.

After watching Lee DeWyze's performance of 'Beautiful Like You' on the stage that made him famous(?), we think he deserves more.

Sure, DeWyze is the third guitar-playing, crooning pretty boy in a row to win the crown, but he showcased a seasoned vocal on this performance that is more than worthy of success. Perhaps he'll experience the 'Idol' bump that most artists get after performing on the show.

'American Idol' airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8PM ET on FOX.

by Gabrielle Dunn, posted Jul 30th 2010 2:30PM
CrystalyzeWe weren't exactly the biggest Lee DeWyze fans during this past season of 'American Idol,' but we'll admit that after we interviewed him last week, we're ready to call him our new BFF.

As you'll see after the jump, the interview turned out to be, as Lee might put it, amazing. (Though, as he told us, he's ready to pick a new favorite word.)

In this special SomethingPitchy interview, watch as the season 9 champ dishes on getting new tattoos, what it's like to be the star of the 'American Idol' tour and what his new album is going to sound like. (Get ready for lots of polka!)

Then, stick around for SP's favorite girl Crystal Bowersox, who told Gaby about her son's cute mispronunciations, her budding romance with TV host Jimmy Kimmel (not!) and her thoughts on the new Janis Joplin biopic. (How was she not cast, Hollywood?!)

Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @somethingpitchy (or @gabydunn and @aolandy) for more 'Idol' coverage.

Interview: 'American Idol' Winner Lee DeWyze -- He Did It His Way

by Kim Potts, posted May 28th 2010 11:07PM
That Lee DeWyze is one chatty dude. Sure, winning 'American Idol' is probably gonna put you in a good mood, but as he gave lengthy, well thought out answers about his past, present and future in a press conference call earlier Friday, one thing became clear: If the 'Idol' producers want to know one thing they should improve upon next season, it's giving viewers the chance to get to know the contestants a little better.

In seasons past, we had a good feel for the contestants' personalities, especially as the Top 12 got smaller and smaller and each singer got more screen time. In season 9, not so much, which is why almost every post-elimination night interview with the contestants this season ended with almost all of them proving to be much savvier, more engaging, more confident and more interesting than they ever appeared to be on the 'Idol' stage.

Food for thought 'Idol' producers ...

Lee DeWyzeIt was a long and grueling season, but SomethingPitchy made it all the way to the end to see paint salesman Lee DeWyze be crowned the next 'American Idol.'

Did Lee actually deserve to win? That's just one of many hot-button topics on the table in this final episode of the season. Also up for discussion: Simon's farewell, the return of Paula Abdul and whether season 9 really was 'Idol''s worst season ever.

'American Idol' - 'Finale Results' Recap (Season Finale)

american idol final 2
It's been a long season, but we're finally at the end. Simon is saying goodbye tonight, and we're going to crown another American Idol. Both contestants are deserving, although Crystal impressed me a little bit more last night. Regardless, when the winner is announced at the end of the episode, I'm going to be happy. They both deserve it, and I'm sure they're both going to go on to have a career.

Of course, the weird school uniforms make me think that the careers they are going to go on to are of the weird married-stripping-team variety, a la Steve Carell and Tina Fey in 'Date Night,' but Ryan did say we were in for a lot of surprises tonight, so I'm just going to go with it.

'American Idol' Winner 2010 Is Lee DeWyze

by Donald Deane, posted May 26th 2010 10:00PM
Who won 'American Idol' season 9? After 17 weeks of 'Idol' performances, Lee DeWyze captured the 'American Idol' crown in the finale over Crystal Bowersox.

Some fans may be mystified that DeWyze took the crown as the next 'Idol,' especially after his performances Tuesday night, where he often sang out of tune, looked uncomfortable onstage and mustered only a negligible amount of energy. Bowersox, on the other hand, did everything right and sounded terrific. And yet, DeWyze garnered the popular vote and emerged victorious.

MJ's Take: The Final 2: It's Crystal Bowersox in a Knockout

by MJ Santilli, posted May 26th 2010 9:08AM
Let's have a moment of silence for ... the big cheesy coronation single. The biggest surprise this very last week of Idol? Instead of being handed a brand new (always awful) song to sing, Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox were given the opportunity to sing a cover in competition, with the eventual winner releasing that song as the winner's single.

I complain about the dreck-filled cliche-ridden coronation singles every year. Now that they're gone? Hm. I might be missing them a little! Well, maybe not. Heh.

Crystal chose Patti Griffin's 'Up to the Mountain' -- a gorgeous song that Kelly Clarkson famously performed with Jeff Beck on the very first 'Idol Gives Back' show in season 6. Crystal nailed it, took it to church, hit it out of the ballpark. You name the cliche--she killed it. Easily the moment of the season. And, in a perfect world, that performance would seal the win for Crystal.

'American Idol' - 'Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox Compete' Recap

American Idol, Lee DeWyze, Crystal Bowersox
We're down to the wire on 'American Idol,' live at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Live! Based on tonight's performances, I have some thoughts on who should win it, but I'll save those for the end of this recap. It's clear that both Lee DeWyze and Crystal Bowersox are in it to win it.

The show started off with Lee and Crystal making their way to the stage through the audience, a decision the producers might want to re-think in the future, since Crystal lost her microphone twice on the way down. By the time they reached the stage, they both seemed a little overwhelmed. But the show must go on, so here we go.

'American Idol' Season 9 Finale to Have "Something ... for Everybody"

by Anna Dimond, posted May 25th 2010 10:44PM
Who will America choose? On Wednesday, 'American Idol' will crown its winner in the season 9 finale, which pits all-American Lee DeWyze against vocal powerhouse Crystal Bowersox.

With the annual red carpet glamour kicking things off Wednesday (May 26, 6PM ET on Fox), the extravaganza will feature requisite group performances with the entire top 12, as well as duets, guest performances and a bevy of other acts that have yet to be revealed.

As the flurry of preparation picks up pace, the gurus responsible for orchestrating the season's last show are working overtime to make the magic happen. "It's like summer camp," said Michael Orland, the associate music director for 'Idol.' "It is really my favorite time(of the season), because you bond so much with all the contestants, and they all go so quick. Now they're back, and it's almost like they never left."

'American Idol': Lee DeWyze's 'Beautiful Day' vs. Crystal Bowersox's 'Up to the Mountain' (VIDEO)

by AOL TV Staff, posted May 25th 2010 10:39PM
Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze face off on the final 'American Idol' performance show of the season, each singing a cover tune instead of the treacly original dreck of seasons past.

DeWyze took a stab at U2's 'Beautiful Day' and struggled a bit, and his feedback from the judges was lukewarm at best (and Ellen's pandering doesn't count). But Bowersox gave an emotional performance of 'Up to the Mountain' by Patty Griffin that easily eclipsed DeWyze and got a rave of "outstanding" by the toughest judge on the panel, Simon Cowell.

The Final Showdown: Crystal vs. Lee. Roll the Tape!

by Donald Deane, posted May 25th 2010 9:52PM
This is it! After months and months of competition, the field of hopefuls has been whittled down to Crystal Bowersox and Lee DeWyze, each vying for the coveted title of the next 'American Idol.'

The contestants performed three songs each during Tuesday night's final performance show -- a song of their own choice, a song selected by executive producer Simon Fuller and a song that will become the winner's first single.

Unfortunately, DeWyze's vocals were inconsistent throughout the night. He fell in and out of tune, and he was even accused by the judges of not having enough energy. Bowersox, however, powered through her performances and sang with real heart. This was no more apparent than when both performed the songs meant to be their first singles should they win.

Simon Cowell Predicts Lee DeWyze Will Win 'American Idol'

by Gabrielle Dunn, posted May 25th 2010 11:15AM
Simon CowellSimon Cowell loves a good dark horse, and this season is clearly no exception.

In a taped segment airing today on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show,' Cowell predicted that Lee DeWyze will win 'Idol' season 9.

"If you'd asked me five or six weeks ago, 100 percent I would have said Crystal [Bowersox]. But now I've changed my mind. I think Lee is going to win," Cowell said.

The reason for Cowell's change of heart, he said, is because of the former paint salesman's captivating personal story.

"He's worked in a paint shop," Cowell said of DeWyze. "He's talented. He hasn't had any real breaks in life, and this has given him a shot, and I like that."
