Cate Rejects Baze on 'Life Unexpected' (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Apr 13th 2010 3:38AM
Life Unexpected, Cate rejects BazeWell, Baze, you goofball. You can't dash to the church just in time to tell the woman you love how you feel about her, and then expect her to fall into your arms. That's not how it happens in real life, and it's not how it happened on 'Life Unexpected' (Mon, 8PM ET on The CW).

Cate had already made her choice, and it wasn't you. Nope, you got there just in time to hear the minister say, "I now pronounce you husband and wife." Better luck next time, buddy.

What to Watch: April 12

by Kim Potts, posted Apr 12th 2010 6:00AM
'Life Unexpected' (8PM, The CW) season 1 finale
No official word yet on a second season, but ratings have been respectable, and there's every reason for fans to be hopeful that this won't serve as the show's series finale. And yes, that means a cliffhanger is likely, as Cate's wedding day is imminent. Of course, she's conflicted about the big event, especially since daughter Lux is encouraging her dad, Baze, Cate's babydaddy, to 'fess up to Cate that he has feelings for her. Will Cate stick with fiancée Ryan, or will she rekindle her teen-years romance with Baze? No spoilers here, though you should expect a church scene that's reminiscent of 'The Graduate.'

Life UnexpectedAhhh, yoga class. A nice retreat from all of life's cares and worries; a gentle place to decompress from everything. Until you figure out that the guy sitting in front of you is the mystery guy who's sleeping with your sister.

You were the plus one," says Cate to Baze on 'Life Unexpected' (Mon., 8PM ET on The CW). "This is all making sense now ... the sex, the therapy ... you are the guy that my sister is sleeping with?!" Guilty as charged.

Lux Confronts Cate on 'Life Unexpected' (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Mar 23rd 2010 3:21AM
Life UnexpectedThings got even more complicated on 'Life Unexpected' (Mon., 8PM ET on The CW), when Lux confronted Cate about giving her up for adoption.

And her words cut deep: "Now doesn't count," said Lux. "I'm sorry, I don't forgive you, Cate. I don't know when I'll ever be able to forgive you."

Well, she'll have to get in line because Cate said she won't be able to forgive herself either. Let's hope someone forgives someone on this show eventually.

'Life Unexpected's' Britt Robertson on Prom, Corey Haim and Her 20th Birthday

by Patricia Chui, posted Mar 15th 2010 12:15PM
Britt RobertsonThese days, it seems as if practically every teenage character on TV is wealthy, witty and dressed like a fashion plate -- basically, a mini-adult for whom parents and school are just an inconvenient distraction.

That's why Lux, the character Britt Robertson plays on the CW's 'Life Unexpected,' is such a breath of fresh air on the teen drama landscape. Having grown up in foster care, 16-year-old Lux tracks down her birth parents so that she can be legally emancipated, only to find herself stuck with them (and vice versa). Her birth mom, Cate Cassidy (Shiri Appleby), is a radio host who's romantically involved with co-host Ryan Thomas (Kerr Smith); her dad is bar owner Nate "Baze" Bazile (Kristoffer Polaha), a lifelong slacker who's forced to grow up right along with Lux.

As Lux, Robertson -- at 19 already a showbiz veteran, with credits that include 'Dan in Real Life' and 'Swingtown' -- gives a charming, unpretentious, totally relatable performance, which is one of the many reasons 'Life Unexpected' (which has been compared to family dramas like 'Gilmore Girls' and 'Everwood') is one of the best midseason shows of 2010. We spoke with Robertson from her home in L.A. about where both she and Lux are headed in the future.

'Life Unexpected' - 'Crisis Unaverted' Recap

by Hemal Jhaveri, posted Mar 2nd 2010 11:20AM
Life Unexpected (S01E07) Perhaps this episode should have been called 'Comeuppance Received'? Tensions between Cate, Ryan and Baze boiled over and for once, Cate is the one who messed up royally. I've said before that it's been hard for me to connect with Cate and see past her grating Type-A exterior. But even I winced at the epic dumping she got from Eric. It was deserved, but brutal.

And Cate's early attempt to whitewash her whole affair looked even more petty in wake of the serious drama Lux was going through with Tasha. The kid had a tough time this episode, and sadly, only Baze was really there for her in the end.

'Life Unexpected' - 'Truth Unrevealed' Recap

by Hemal Jhaveri, posted Feb 23rd 2010 11:31AM
Life Unexpected(S01E05) Nothing ruins a good episode like fifteen minutes of maudlin weeping. After a brisk 45 minutes of 'Three's Company'-style hijinks, wherein Baze invades Cate & Ryan's perfect life, the tension between Ryan/Cate/Baze comes to a grinding halt when everyone starts exploring their feelings.

Not to sound too cynical, but why should every episode end with a very touching moment, complete with soft singer/songwriter acoustic guitar music in the background?

There's nothing compelling, interesting or even vaguely original about that. And as a viewer, all these cues let you know one thing: there's some serious scenery chewing coming up.

'Life Unexpected' - 'Turtle Undefeated'

by Hemal Jhaveri, posted Feb 16th 2010 2:32AM
Life Unexpected (S01E05) So, after last week's excess of "after school special" moments, we get a wonderfully funny, balanced and mature episode this time around. As Lux struggles to fit in with the kids at her new school, Cate struggles with her status as a stern mom, rather then the fun-loving radio host.

And Baze? Well, Baze struggles with his relationship with Lux, with his own father and how to drum up interest in a three-legged turtle. Despite its meandering nature, the episode was a nice rumination on the complicated relationship we all have with our parents that doesn't disappear with age.

Review: 'Life Unexpected' - 'Bong Intercepted'

by Hemal Jhaveri, posted Feb 9th 2010 2:15AM
Life Unexpected (S01E04) I am so excited for the return of the infamous bong lamp, but wow, does it cause some major trouble. Last week, we saw Lux sell Baze's pride and joy to help cover his bar rent. Two weeks ago, the offending lamp was also one of the reasons Baze was denied full custody of Lux. This week, it's the reason she gets suspended from her fancy-pants public school. Stupid lamp, can't do anything right.

We're ratcheting up the drama here this week. Lux's illusions of family life crumble a bit more as she and Cate, in the grand traditions of mothers and daughters everywhere, clash something awful.

Review: 'Life Unexpected' - 'Rent Uncollected'

by Hemal Jhaveri, posted Feb 2nd 2010 9:35AM
Life Unexpected(S01E03) Heartstrings were pulled again repeatedly on this episode of 'Life Unexpected,' were they not?

After minor meltdowns from Lux, Baze and Cate last week, the three of them seem to be moving into something of a routine now, having gotten past the sketchy friends and threatening to move out portion of their relationship. Last week, we dug a bit deeper into Lux's life, and this week, we meet Cate and Baze's respective families, who are loud, obnoxious, annoying and intrusive ... which seems pretty much par for the course as far as families go.

TV's Most Memorable Mothers and Daughters

by David Hofstede, posted Jan 29th 2010 3:00PM
The new CW series 'Life Unexpected' explores the unique relationship between Lux (Brittany Robertson), a teenager raised in a succession of foster homes, and her birth mother, radio talk show host Cate Cassidy (Shiri Appleby).

It's the latest in a tradition of TV series featuring memorable mothers and daughters, a formula that has inspired both great shows ('The Gilmore Girls') and disasters ('Kath and Kim'). If 'Life Unexpected' becomes a hit, perhaps we'll have one more duo to add to this list of TV's most memorable moms and the girls they love.

Check out the top 10 list after the jump.

Review: Life Unexpected - House Inspected

by Hemal Jhaveri, posted Jan 26th 2010 11:38AM

(S01E02) -
Oh, Cate. Had I known you were capable of pulling a lowly, John Edwards-esqe move, I may not have been so ready in praise of you last week. Seriously, the one thing I can not overlook in this episode if how quick Cate was to deny her daughter's existence on her radio show. The same radio show that Cate knows Lux listens to religiously.

Happily enough, everyone else was around to pick up the slack as Lux decides if she really can trust her new parents, and if they, in turn, can earn legal foster parent status.

Get ready to have your heart strings pulled, hard.
