Locke and Key

Check Out the 'Locke and Key' Trailer and Mourn What Could Have Been

by Maureen Ryan, posted Aug 25th 2011 11:45AM
You might not want to watch this TV trailer, because it might make you too sad about what could have been.

'Some Guy' recently uploaded a professional-looking trailer for the Fox pilot 'Locke and Key,' and the two-minute Vimeo trailer is more intriguing than many full-blown drama pilots for the new season (yes, 'Grimm,' I'm looking at you). Sadly, 'Locke and Key,' which is based on an acclaimed graphic novel series by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez, was not picked by Fox for the new season.

I was able to see the full pilot for the project at Comic-Con, and it was a bittersweet experience -- as a fan of the graphic novels, I thought the director, Mark Romanek, and writer, 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' scribe Josh Friedman, did an especially sensitive and intelligent job of adapting this eerie haunted house tale. It was a drag to contemplate that this compelling project didn't get picked up to series.

Comic-Con 2011: Highlights from the 'Locke & Key' Panel & Screening

by Maureen Ryan, posted Jul 22nd 2011 5:07PM
One of the most intriguing TV projects of the last year or so has been Fox's 'Locke and Key,' an adaptation of a comic book by Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez.

The good news is that the pilot, which was screened at Comic-Con Friday morning, is excellent. It certainly would have made the list of my Top 10 Promising Pilots for the new season, had it been picked up.

But it was not picked up; that's obviously the bad news. And at a panel after the screening, the show's producers made it clear that they weren't there to get fans to drum up interest from another network.

"We didn't come here to do a Hail Mary and to pull a fast one," producer Robert Orci said.

Hill, Rodriguez, Orci, the pilot's writer, Josh Friedman, director Mark Romanek and two actors (the guys who played Tyler and Sam) were at Comic-Con to show the pilot to fans and to share their pride in the project. It's a drag to report that, as a TV endeavor, it certainly looks like 'Locke and Key' is dead, which is a shame.

I'll divide this post on the pilot and panel into two parts. The first part is safe to read if you hope to read the comic some day and you'd rather not see major plot points from the comic, which has supernatural and horror elements and concerns a family that moves into an old house full of interesting keys. The paragraphs at the end are for those who've read 'Locke and Key' and they contain information about the pilot and the comics.

'The Event' Heading to Syfy?

by Chris Harnick, posted Jun 1st 2011 4:30PM
The EventUPDATE: Craig Engler of Syfy took to Twitter and dispelled the rumors.

"To answer some questions I've been getting," he tweeted, "at this time we have no plans to pick up The Event."

Previously: 'The Event' lives on!? Maybe, according to reports.

The canceled NBC series may have found a second life, and new home on NBC's sister network, Syfy.

Deadline is reporting creator Nick Wauters and executive producer Steve Stark are in talks with Syfy to bring the alien drama to the network as a miniseries. Given that NBC and Syfy are all under the NBC Universal umbrella, the deal could take shape rather quickly.

However, the players involved have to deal with going from a broadcast series budget to that of a cable miniseries. Financial constraints could prevent this event from ever taking place.

Fox Cancels 'Human Target,' 'Lie to Me,' 'The Chicago Code' and More

by Catherine Lawson, posted May 11th 2011 8:30AM
Fox logoIt's that time of year again, the upfronts, when TV networks decide which shows live and which shows die. This year Fox has become the first network to announce which shows are being culled, and it's bad news for Christian Slater. Again...

Fox announced that it's cancelling five of its live action shows: 'Human Target,' Lie to Me,' 'The Chicago Code,' 'Traffic Light' and 'Breaking In.' It also dropped the ax on some of its drama pilots, including the much talked-about 'Locke & Key' and 'Exit Strategy.'

Angry fans turned to Twitter to vent as the news broke late Tuesday, with 'Human Target' fans being among the most vocal. In fact, according to THR, they tweeted so vociferously that the show became a Top 10 trending topic.

Sonja MorganNow that we've come to terms with 'Real Housewives of Miami' taking 'Real Housewives of New York City's' place on Bravo's schedule, it's time to talk about why.

According to 'New York City' star Sonja Morgan, editors need more time to piece the series together.

"They want it to be the best possible season," Morgan told Star magazine. "To do that, they need some more time to edit. We've filmed like crazy, more than ever, and we're seven ladies so they have a lot of footage to go through."

Many insiders -- including us -- speculate the season wasn't shaping up to be very dramatic without Bethenny Frankel. Her new series, 'Bethenny Ever After,' debuts later this month.

For more on 'The Real Housewives of Miami' head on over here to meet the cast and watch a preview.
