by Alex Moaba, posted Nov 10th 2011 1:35PM
Regis Philbin is a sportsman for the ages. Did you know he played on the tennis team when he was a student at Notre Dame? Neither did we. Thanks, Wikipedia!Regs' 'Live' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) farewell tour continued on Thursday with a montage celebrating his athletic prowess, with a look back at him wrestling, boxing, playing pepper with Derek Jeter, snapping a football to Boomer Esiasan and a variety of other sports schenanigans.
The segment concluded with a surprise-guest appearance from a long-time college football coach ... no, not Joe Paterno. It was Lou Holtz, who coached for years at Regis' alma matter Notre Dame. "When the bank asks me to list my assets, I start with my friendship with Regis Philbin," Holtz said.
