'Louie' (Thu., 10:30PM ET on FX) wrapped Season 2 with one of the most brilliantly unique scenes I've ever seen on any kind of television show. Honestly, the only way to describe that moment is that it's so ... 'Louie.'

The show sticks with its two-vignettes format for this episode, but the halves work well together, pushing the character of Louis C.K. reluctantly toward a genuine adulthood. The first half was incredibly awkward and uncomfortable, as Louis succumbed to his weakness and yearnings by agreeing to get in the car with a strange woman.

It's not often that a show gets me to think differently about the possibilities of television. But that's just one of the side bonuses of the brilliant season of 'Louie' (10:30PM ET Thursday, FX) that concludes this week.

Generally speaking, I'm predisposed to like mythology, the meatier the better. But 'Louie' doesn't feature characters traveling along a particular timeline and doesn't develop interlocking stories over the course of a season. This increasingly assured comedy takes a few ideas and examines them from a variety of angles with a thoughtful blend of rigor, humor and innocence.

Yes, innocence. Sure, 'Louie' devotes large amounts of screen time to topics like masturbation, awful sex and self-loathing, but there's something innately winning about Louis C.K.'s dedication to the truth of a situation, no matter how strange or squirm-inducing. And in terms of craft, 'Louie' has proven in recent weeks that its creator, Emmy nominee Louis C.K., has an incredibly astute grasp of how stories work, how to pace them and what makes them interesting.

'Louie' (10:30PM ET Thursday, FX) isn't one of those shows where you need to give it half a season before you decide whether it's for you or not. The terrific 'Louie' is such a fully formed, cogent expression of comedian Louis C.K.'s distinctive mind that you'll know a few minutes into the first episode whether his sensibility aligns with yours.

Without giving too much away, in the first scene of the season, one of Louie's kids makes a casual statement that is heartbreaking. The kid doesn't know what she's said is hurtful; she's just being honest. There's zero melodrama in the scene, and Louie's reaction to his daughter's statement is funny because it's both realistic and brutally honest.

He doesn't punish the kid at all, but the rawness of his eventual reaction is painfully hilarious. It's a reaction I can picture having myself.
