Bear Catches an Eel With Ancient Maori Fishing Technique on 'Man vs. Wild' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 22nd 2011 4:00PM
Bear Grylls fashions a fishing pole out of flax on 'Man vs Wild''Man vs Wild' (Fridays, 9PM on Discovery) is the type of show on which it's not surprising to hear a phrase like, "and that rotting carcass I found earlier will come in handy." Bear Grylls used the stink of a rotting rabbit carcass as bait to catch something that was actually edible.

Grylls used the rabbit and flax to fashion a sort of fishing pole to catch an eel. Why flax? "When the eel bites down on those," he said, pointing to a partially shredded bit of the flax, "because their teeth face backwards, they get their teeth stuck in these strands." He then rubbed the flax in the rabbit guts to lure the eel.

Bear Grylls and Jake Gyllenhaal Strip Down in Freezing Temperatures on 'Man vs. Wild' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Jul 12th 2011 9:40AM
You first heard about it a few weeks ago, but now you finally get to see Jake Gyllenhaal take his shirt off on 'Man vs. Wild' (Mon., 9PM ET on Discovery). Well, there was more to it than that.

He and Bear Grylls both shed their shirts in sub-freezing temperatures to keep them as dry as possible while they crossed a river. It's a far cry from a shirtless Gyllenhaal in the deserts of 'Prince of Persia.'

"I joined up for this, right?" Gyllenhaal lamented as he stripped. They made the crossing fairly quickly, making us cold just from watching them in the freezing water with the cameraman trying to keep the lens free of snow and ice.

8 Celebs We'd Love to See on 'Man vs. Wild'

by AOL TV Staff, posted Jul 11th 2011 4:30PM
'Men vs Wild with Jake Gyllenhaal'Actor Jake Gyllenhaal is going on the adventure of a lifetime tonight: He'll be trekking through the wilds of Iceland for two days with Bear Grylls on a very special episode of 'Man vs. Wild.'

'Men vs. Wild with Jake Gyllenhaal' (Mon., July 11, 9PM ET on Discovery) finds the 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'Love and Other Drugs' star teaming with Grylls for a snowy, icy, carcass-filled trip.

Following in the footsteps of funnyman Will Ferrell, who ventured to Northern Sweden with the show a couple years back, Gyllenhaal will show off his tough-guy skills, without the help of any stuntmen or body doubles like in the movies.

We can't wait to see these two get rugged together, but it got us thinking -- who should be next? Last year, Gryllls told us he wanted Cameron Diaz to tag along, and it looks like that's happening. (Although Ben Stiller was set to go, too -- whatever happened with that?)

Here, eight more celebrities we'd love to see roughing it on 'Man vs. Wild.'

Bear Grylls Talks Fan Adventures on 'Man vs. Wild' and More

by Maggie Furlong, posted Aug 20th 2010 11:00AM
Bear GryllsUnless you like dating, designing or dieting in front of millions of viewers, reality TV has always kind of been a participation-free zone. Until now.

Bear Grylls, the tireless host of 'Man vs. Wild' (Wednesdays, 9PM ET on Discovery), treated two lucky viewers to a Fan vs. Wild adventure this season, giving them a story to tell for the rest of their lives ... assuming they made it out OK.

I caught up with Grylls to hear about their journey, then got scoop on the show's new video game and the realities of getting injured on the job.

Will Ferrell gets "lost" with Bear Grylls

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Jun 1st 2009 7:05PM

Will Ferrell and Bear GryllsIf you've got a hankering to see Will Ferrell's new comedy flick Land of the Lost, you definitely don't want to miss tomorrow night's new episode of Man Vs. Wild (airs Tuesday 6/2 at 10PM ET on Discovery Channel).

The special, dubbed Men Vs. Wild, will feature Ferrell trekking out into the harsh wilderness with host Bear Grylls in what's sure to be a more humorous than informative hour. Exclusive clips from Land of the Lost (it opens this Friday) will play throughout the commercial breaks.

Personally, I'm more excited about this than the movie itself. I love Ferrell, but Land of the Lost just strikes me as a remake that didn't need to be made. However, you have to admit, this is one helluva perfect cross-promotional stunt - anything to see Ferrell cracking jokes while peeing in the Swedish wilderness and wearing a dead animal hide.

Here's a preview - after watching it, I'm pretty sure Ferrell would have a hard time surviving in a supermarket.

New TV on DVD releases this week

by Bob Sassone, posted Jan 12th 2009 6:03PM
Stargate DVDHere are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

How can there be so many DVDs released in one day and there not be one that I want to buy? I never got into Stargate, I don't want to own Dallas on DVD, ditto Reba, and I refuse to buy Walker Texas Ranger because a.) it's not very good, and b.) it replaced a show that I really loved in the early 90s. I enjoyed Benny Hill, but I don't know if I enjoyed it enough to own it. So it looks like I'm going to save some money this week.

Yeah, right. Like I won't find something to buy that was released a while ago.

  • Alvin & The Chipmunks - The Chipettes
  • Ben 10 Alien Force - Season 1, Vol. 2
  • The Benny Hill Show - Best of the Early Years
  • Captain and the Kings - Miniseries
  • Dallas - Season 10
  • House of Payne - Vol. 3
