Hulu public launch coming Wednesday

by Brad Linder, posted Mar 11th 2008 10:56AM
Hulu
Online video site Hulu officially launches tomorrow. The site which was founded as an online content distribution clearinghouse for NBC and News Corp TV shows, movies, and clips, has added a ton of content partners over the last few months. And when it emerges from private beta tomorrow, there will be a few more, including:
  • Warner Brothers
  • Lionsgate
  • NBA
  • Wine Library TV
  • NHL
  • CNet
  • MGM
All told, the site will have a few dozen content partners, about 100 movies and full length episodes from about 250 TV shows.

I've been relatively impressed with Hulu so far. The video quality is good, and it's relatively easy to find the content you're looking for by searching or browsing. But as the content library gets larger, I'd like to see Hulu improve its site navigation a bit or browsing is going to become nearly impossible.

OPENhulu: Why wait for a Hulu invitation?

by Brad Linder, posted Dec 11th 2007 1:33PM
OPENhulu and Hulu
Want to check out the NBC Universal and News Corp's invite-only online video site Hulu, but haven't been able to get an invitation? No problem, just check out OPENhulu. You can much of the same content, streaming directly from Hulu's servers.

OPENhulu is the brainchild of Matt Schlicht, and while he insists that he isn't violating any of Hulu's rules, we can't imagine it'll take long for someone to send this guy a cease and desist notice.

Schlicht's idea is pretty simple. Hulu lets you embed most of the service's videos on your own website. Since the videos include advertisements, Hulu makes money no matter where you watch them. So Schlicht has begun to embed every video he can on his own site. The layout isn't quite as pretty as Hulu, and there's a whole bunch of advertising on every page.

Since Schlicht has to copy and paste the embed code one at a time, not every TV show, series, or movie is available yet. If you're looking for Doogie Houser M.D. episodes you're out of luck for now. But you can watch The A-Team, Bones, House, My Name is Earl and many other popular shows. Or you could visit NBC.com or Fox.com to find many of the same episodes.

Hulu: Yes, we do plan to go international... eventually

by Brad Linder, posted Nov 10th 2007 12:58PM
HuluHulu is broadening its private beta a bit by sending out a few thousand more invitations to people who have requested them. Unlike many other private betas, current users do not get to send out invitations, so you'll just have to wait for Hulu to send you an email if you haven't received one yet.

The online video site is a partnership between NBC and News Corp and includes video content from both TV channels including NBC, FOX, USA Network, and the SCI FI Channel. There's also a tiny little selection of movies available.

So far, the service has only been available within the US. If you try to watch a Hulu video, even one that's been embedded in a non-Hulu website fro outside of the US you'll get an error message.

In a blog posting, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar writes that this is something the organization plans to address. First, Hulu will have to get the rights to distribute content in every country, which he says will take time. Eventually, he says the goal is to make content available no matter where you are.

Of course, since Hulu isn't a public service, we're guessing FOX and News Corp are also going to want to ensure they can line up advertisers for each country that will have access to Hulu as well.

NBC and FOX launch Hulu online video portal private beta - VIDEO

by Brad Linder, posted Oct 29th 2007 10:40AM
Hulu AOL
I may never have to pay for cable again. I cut the cable a few months back when I hooked up a digital antenna to my TV and personal video recorder. Since this summer I've been watching crystal clear high definition TV shows recorded over the broadcast airwaves. But I've also been a bit concerned about what would happen once BattleStar Galactica starts up again. Would I be tempted to pay for cable? Would I buy the complete season from iTunes?

While I was a bit skeptical when I first heard about Hulu, the new online video site from NBC and News Corp, here's one thing I will say for it: The site will feature BSG episodes. And a whole lot of other programs too, it turns out. Between FOX and NBC, the two networks own an awful lot of channels and TV shows. You can find all sorts of current and classic goodies on Hulu, ranging from Bones and Heroes to WKRP in Cincinnati and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Right now, the site is in private beta. That means you'll need an invitation to watch. And while you can sign up for an invitation at the main web page, only a few thousand people will be granted access for now. But thanks to Silicon Alley Insider we got an embed code which let us post a video. And that means you can access all kinds of other Hulu Goodies as well. Check it out after the jump.

Will NBC and Fox launch Hulu next week?

by Brad Linder, posted Oct 23rd 2007 8:04PM
HuluThere's a rumor going around that NBC and FOX are preparing to launch a private beta of their new online video site on Monday. Or maybe Wednesday.

Hulu will be a central location for finding clips, promotional content, and full-length streaming episodes of NBC and News Corp programs. The timing makes sense, seeing as NBC pulled all of its content from YouTube this weekend.

Once the site launches, you'll be able to find out what people do on Lazy Sundays and what they put in boxes again. Hulu will be an ad-supported streaming video site. You can still download episodes of NBC and News Corp shows from sites including Amazon and iTunes.
