Chef Duff Plays Sled Hockey with Olympians (VIDEO)

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 23rd 2010 4:01PM
DuffThat's a headline that doesn't really make sense at first glance. Chef Duff? Sled hockey? Olympians?

The 'Ace of Cakes' (Thursday at 10PM ET on Food Network) host got to play the sport with members of the U.S. Olympic team. If you're not familiar with sled hockey, it's like regular hockey only you sit in these little chairs that have a rail and skates attached to them. It looks a lot harder than regular hockey, that's for sure. You're probably surprised to hear that there's a sport called sled hockey and even more surprised that it's an Olympic sport.

No word on whether or not Percy Jackson was there.

FOX Planning Bid for Olympics Coverage

by Audrey Fine, posted May 5th 2010 1:30PM
Despite the fact that NBC Universal took a whopping $200 million dollar hit by airing the 2010 Winter Olympics, Fox, the only network of the Big Four to have never showed them, is keen to bid on the upcoming games.

"It's one of those greats things to have. It's an iconic event," Fox Sports chief David Hill told Variety. "We will make a strong bid next time around."

With the TV rights for both the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, and the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, up for grabs, the broadcast nets are getting their ducks in a row -- even though the International Olympic Committee has yet to decide when it will open the bidding. (Insiders predict it'll happen in the Fall.)

One Last Note About The Olympics, From Jimmy Fallon

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 4th 2010 11:28AM
Because of The Olympics, 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon' wasn't on for the past few weeks, which means he couldn't do his regular "Thank You Notes" segment on Friday nights. But he was in Vancouver and sat down with Bob Costas and a studio audience and did an Olympics-themed version of the bit. Costas accompanies him on keyboard.

Funny how Costas mentions Craig Kilborn at the end. I still have a memory of Kilborn doing something like "Thank You Notes" on his CBS show, or am I remembering wrong?

If ESPN Gets the Olympics, It Would Ditch Tape Delay

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 26th 2010 4:03PM
ESPNAs we talked about in this week's edition of the TV Squad Podcast, NBC is getting a lot of bad press (again) for their programming decisions for the Olympics. Too much focus on personal drama, too many odd interviews interrupting events, and tape delays. That last one is what irks people the most, and one network says that if they had the Olympics they wouldn't have a tape delay, they'd show everything live.

That network is ESPN. They're going to bid on the 2014 winter games and the 2016 summer games, and if they win, they're going to scrap the whole tape delay thing.

What You Missed Last Night: Stephen and Ed Colbert At The Olympics

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 23rd 2010 2:02PM
The commentary and analysis of The Olympics is more interesting than the Olympics themselves, like Joel's post about 'Today' and their coverage of the Games and the one about the ratings. Also, this clip from 'The Colbert Report.' Stephen is doing his shows this week from Vancouver, and last night he had his brother (an attorney) on to let him know what he can and cannot say about the Olympics so NBC doesn't get sue him.

NBC's Olympic Coverage Stinks, But It Gets Results

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 22nd 2010 8:22PM
NBC's Vancouver Olympics logoComplaining about how NBC covers the Olympics is almost an Olympic sport all by itself. Pretty much ever since the Atlanta games in 1996, NBC has been raked over the coals for tape-delaying events and concentrating on stories instead of the sports themselves.

The outrage has been especially loud when the Games have been held in North America, mainly because the time differences are minimal. The hue and cry has been louder than ever from Vancouver, mainly because, in a world where results can be shot around to every computer and cell phone in the world via Twitter and Facebook, NBC is shooting itself in the foot with what seems to be 1990s thinking.

Here's the rub, though: The Olympics are kicking tail in the ratings, despite all the complaints.

Shaun White and Lindsey Vonn Dish on Gold Medals (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 21st 2010 10:25PM
The Oprah Winfrey Show, Lindsey Vonn, 2010 OlympicsGold medal winners Shaun White and Lindsey Vonn appeared on 'Oprah Winfrey' (weekdays, syndicated) to talk about their victories at the 'XXI Winter Olympics.' Both brought home gold medals for the U.S., and each went through their own journeys to achieve it.

White had the gold locked up even without his signature move, but decided to go for it anyway, even though he'd suffered an injury with it previously. "In my mind, it wasn't really an option ... I don't quit too easily."

For Vonn, the reality is still sinking in. "I can't believe I have a gold medal. It's just surreal to me ... everything that I've worked for my whole life is finally coming true. I've dreamed about that moment since I was a little girl."
