Did TV execs get kinder and gentler this year?

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Has anyone else noticed the lack of hair trigger cancellations thus far this season? We're a good month or more in now and only Opportunity Knocks and Do Not Disturb have had the plug pulled. And believe me those needed to happen. By now, though, your high quality shows that have underperformed like Pushing Daisies usually would be doing just that ... pushing up daisies. But, for some reason, not this year. At least not yet.

Hell, ratings-challenged shows like Knight Rider and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles are even getting full season pick-ups. And that's FOX giving Sarah Connor a chance to find an audience! FOX!! I think what we're seeing is the continuing fallout from the Writer's Strike last year. Remember when the execs were talking about how they were going to rethink their approach to television, ordering fewer pilots and possibly even altering the landscape of television in regards to seasons and sweeps? Well, the fall season started up pretty much like it always has, but I do believe there are far fewer shows waiting in the wings to replace this season's failures.

What to Watch Tuesday, Sept. 23

'The Mentalist'
(9PM, CBS) series premiere
An incredibly observant man who uses those skills to pose as a psychic medium and help solve crimes ... so what's the difference between 'Mentalist' Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) and 'Psych's' Shawn Spencer?

Mostly, Jane wears suits. And while Shawn employs an endless arsenal of pop culture references and goofy humor to aid him in his crime-solving capers, 'The Mentalist' tackles his cases in a more dramatic fashion.

Still, there's much charm and flair in Jane's methods as a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation, and even the potential for one of those long-simmering TV romances between Jane and his prickly CBI colleague Teresa (Robin Tunney).

ABC wrap-up: Eli Stone, a DWTSer sings, and Ashton Kutcher hates my question - TCA Report

Julianne HoughThe remaining panels on ABC's first day were for Eli Stone, the Ashton Kutcher-produced game show Opportunity Knocks, and a panel for the upcoming Country Music Association events on the network. For the latter panel, Julianne Hough, who has twice partnered with the celebrity champion of Dancing with the Stars, sang a few songs from her current country album. Pretty girl. Nice voice. Dancer's body. But that's all I can say about the panel, because I bolted shortly after she was done singing.

The Eli Stone panel featured the entire cast along with executive producers Greg Berlanti (who seems to be producing two-thirds of ABC's scripted dramas) and Marc Guggenheim. Surprisingly enough, there was only one question about the presence of Katie Holmes as a guest star this season. The reason why she's there is a shock -- they brought her in to get ratings! Will wonders never cease?
