'The Oprah Winfrey Show' Finale Gets Highest Ratings Since 1994

by Jean Bentley, posted May 26th 2011 2:30PM
Oprah WinfreyIt seems Oprah Winfrey's message of love and self-acceptance during the final episode of her talk show was enough to boost yesterday's goodbye to the top of the ratings.

Despite the fact that none of the multitude of celebrities present at the taping in Chicago's United Center actually appeared during the episode, during which Winfrey looked back on her 25 years on television, the last installment of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' scored a major 13.3 household rating.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, that's the biggest audience for a single episode since 1994. For a show that's been on the air for two and a half decades, that's a pretty respectable way to go out. The previous record-holder: a Feb. 21, 1994 show called 'People Shed Their Disguises,' "during which Winfrey convinced guests to stop hiding behind questionable style and grooming choices," THR reports.

Hugh Jackman, 'The Early Show'There's a reason actors and actresses use stunt men while filming movies: their faces are their money-makers. Hugh Jackman may want to consider hiring one to use for talk-show appearances as well, after a mishap filming an upcoming episode of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' in Australia.

As reported by 'The Early Show' (Weekdays, 7AM on CBS), Jackman was performing a zip line stunt from the top of the Sydney Opera House to the Australian set of Winfrey's show. However, he failed to brake quickly enough and wound up hitting some scaffolding up near the lights.

Hugh Jackman Injured on 'Oprah' Set in Australia

by Catherine Lawson, posted Dec 14th 2010 6:20AM
Hugh Jackman reacts after injuring his eyeOprah-mania's reached fever-pitch in Sydney, Australia where she's been taping shows for the final season of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show.'

Thousands of screaming fans have been attending the tapings, at an outdoor set at the Sydney Opera House, which has been renamed the "Oprah House" for the occasion. And it's been reported that one of Oprah's star guests, Australian actor Hugh Jackman, was injured taping a segment there.

According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Jackman had been attempting to enter the stage in dramatic fashion with a ride on the flying fox -- a heavy-duty wire set with a harness and handle assembly that slides on wheels -- when he hit the brakes too late and slammed into rigging.

"I'm not 100 per cent, actually," Jackman said, after struggling to free himself from his harness while dangling 30 feet in the air. "I've hurt my eye; it's not bad. I'm really sorry about this."

Portia de Rossi on Her Secret Eating Disorder -- and What Saved Her Life (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Nov 2nd 2010 12:06AM
Portia de Rossi on Her Secret Eating Disorder -- and What Saved Her LifePortia de Rossi once weighed 82 pounds. The actress existed on a 300 calorie-a-day diet: family members were afraid she would die. Eventually, she collapsed while on a film set -- as a result of her diet, her internal organs were failing. She was only 25 years old.

The actress began dieting as a 12-year-old. She was a child model; an agent told Portia her skinny frame was too large. As a result, De Rossi became anorexic and bulimic. It took her more than a decade to recover.

On 'Oprah' (weekdays, syndicated), Portia revealed her eating disorder -- and discussed what saved her life. De Rossi was saved by a strong female presence ... but it wasn't her wife Ellen DeGeneres. No, Portia credits her survival to the day when she "found love ... with a horse."

Sultry Sofia Vergara Talks About Her Accent, Her Role on 'Modern Family''Modern Family' starlet Sofía Vergara appeared on the latest 'Oprah Winfrey Show' (weekdays, syndicated). She discussed her increasingly impenetrable South American accent, and how it was her dream to one day marry the dumpy guy from 'Married ... With Children.' And okay -- the rest of the cast of 'Modern Family' was there as well. But we'll be honest: sometimes we only have eyes for Ms. Vergara.

Host Oprah Winfrey asked Sophía why her accent seems to be getting heavier, even though she's been living in America for some time now. The actress replied that she actually does it for comedic effect, and gave an example: "I realized that sometimes it was funnier to say 'YOOOUHH' [rather] than 'you.'" Good point!

Oprah Interviews Sarah Shroud, the Hiker Who Spent 410 Days Jailed in Iran (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Sep 24th 2010 4:05AM
Oprah Interviews Sarah Shroud, the Hiker Who Spent 410 Days Trapped in an Iranian PrisonOn July 31, 2009, three American hikers left their hotel in northern Iraq. The hikers were: 31-year-old Sarah Shroud, her boyfriend Shane Bauer and their friend Josh Fattal. During their hike, the trio took a wrong turn, and may have strayed over the border into the nation of Iran. They were captured by Iranian soliders and were arrested on the spot. Then, they were thrown in jail and accused of being American spies.

All told, Ms. Shroud spent 410 days in prison -- a nearly 14-month-long sentence. She was kept in solitary confinement, in a cell measuring 10 ft x 5 ft. Her only contact with her friends came for two thirty-minute periods each day, when she was briefly allowed outside. Otherwise, Sarah was completely cut off from the world she had once known.

After more than a year, Sarah was released. Today on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' (weekdays, syndicated), Sarah gave her first interview since escaping Iran. She discussed what it was like to be falsely accused of being a spy -- and what kept her going during her dark days in jail.

Oprah Winfrey makes some pretty crazy faces. However, her reactions are nothing compared to the freakish hysterics of her audience members after they were told they're going to Australia. Wow, you would think Fosters beer allows eternal life the way some of those women reacted.

It did not take long before yesterday's premiere of 'The Oprah Winfrey Show's' 25th season inspired an entire blog. 'Faces Of The Last Season of Oprah' promises to chronicle the absurdity that will no doubt ensue this season through screen-grabs of reaction shots.

Oprah's Ratings Hit All-Time Low

by Audrey Fine, posted Jul 16th 2010 11:40AM
Could it be that Americans care more about Judge Judy's rulings on he said/she said landlord disputes than Oprah Winfrey's favorite things? Judging by recent ratings, the answer is a resounding "yes."

According to B&C, the queen of daytime's 24-year reign atop the ratings ladder came to an abrupt end the week ending June 28 when her share fell below the 3.0 mark for the first time ever. And, the scenario grew still dimmer the week ending July 4, when the show fell into the 2 rating-range with an all-time low of 2.9.

Roger Ebert Debuts New Computer Voice on 'Oprah' (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Mar 3rd 2010 12:05AM
Oprah Winfrey, Roger Ebert's New VoiceRoger Ebert's voice could never really be silenced because he's such a force of nature in the film industry. But it's heartening to know that the film critic's actual voice can now be heard, thanks to a new computer program he debuted on 'Oprah Winfrey' (weekdays, syndicated).

And we bet his wife is a force of nature, too. It's not easy being a caregiver, but you can tell she's stood by him through thick and thin. Good for these two, shining examples of what a good attitude and a good partnership should be.
