It looks like it might be easier for Kelli Giddish to put her 'Past Life' behind her than it was for those of us unfortunate enough to have seen the show. Giddish played Dr. Kate McGinn, who used people's past lives to solve modern crimes. The show was even worse than it sounds dropping from 9 million viewers to 3.5 million in only three episodes.

But Giddish has bounced back, with The Hollywood Reporter indicating she's been cast as the lead in the Jerry Bruckheimer NBC pilot 'Chase.' The series would follow a U.S. Marshall in Texas who's team is tasked with tracking down and bringing in America's most dangerous fugitives. While it hasn't been stated, it's probably safe to assume there will be no past life regressions to deal with; just current life transgressions.

'Past Life' is officially a thing of the past.

According to the Live Feed, Fox has pulled the plug on the newbie crime drama. In its place: 'Kitchen Nightmares.' Fox will air three original episodes of the Gordon Ramsay show at 9PM on Thursdays, with 'Life''s remaining episodes scheduled to air later in the season.

'Past Life' -- which premiered last week -- got off to a dismal start in the ratings; its debut episode averaged about 9 million viewers, a loss of two-thirds from its lead-in, ratings juggernaut 'American Idol.'

(S01E01) 'Past Life' is not a bad show, but I don't know if it will stand out enough to make it past the first few episodes. But who knows, it might strike a chord with viewers and find a spot on the DVR schedules. It's a little bit 'House,' a little bit 'Medium,' and a little bit 'Fringe.'

The story follows Dr. Kate McGinn (Kelli Giddish), a psychologist specializing in past life regression -- memories of past lives or incarnations. In the pilot episode, a teenager named Noah has flashes where he remembers something that never happened to him. He sees visions of a kidnapping and murder, and we eventually learn that he's actually remembering something from someone else's life.

Fox continues to use American Idol as a magnet to attract viewers to sample its other shows, including newbies like The Human Target. And last year, Glee. With that same philosophy in mind, Fox's Past Life is getting an American Idol boost. On Tuesday, February 9, Past Life will premiere at 9 p.m. following American Idol.

From a programming point of view, they don't go together. You're not likely to get the same viewer lapping up the songs and shtick on Idol that will get into the psychic/sci-fi vibe of Past Life. But that's not the point because ultimately, this is about getting a sample. Past Life will be on Thursday, February 11-18 after Bones, then get another post-Idol goose on February 25-March 11.

Fox has just announced its midseason lineup and it looks like a doozy! Between returning hits like 'Glee,' pop culture staples like 'American Idol' and 'The Simpsons,' not to mention a handful of promising new series, it looks like Fox has an unseasonably hot winter ahead. The networks have had a quiet summer, quietly introducing scripted bomb after scripted bomb, so they're certainly ready to jump into the new fall season. And It looks to be an interesting one. ABC is scheduling a two-hour block of new comedies on Wednesdays as the sitcom tries to make a comeback.

Even more risky is NBC handing 10:00 to Jay Leno every night of the week. Everyone's waiting to see how that one plays out. FOX is banking on huge positive buzz for Glee to make it a hit, while ABC is hoping FlashForward can pick up where Lost is leaving off when it wraps its run this season.

While it was a little odd that the "screener" of Glee we got was the exact same episode that FOX aired after American Idol in the spring, the rest of these shows were truly new. Dramatic offerings included FOX's loose adaptation of the DC Comics property Human Target and Past Life. On the comedy side they offered us screeners for The Cleveland Show, Brothers, Sons of Tucson and the aforementioned Glee.

After enduring the screener for Do Not Disturb last season on FOX, I could only hope that these offerings were at least better than that offense to the senses. And they were. Well, most of them. Unfortunately, it seems that FOX has at least one Do Not Disturb in them every season. Other than that, one of these shows was far better than I expected, another a bit worse, and a third one stands as one of the better pilots I've ever seen.
