I'm very excited about the 'TV Land Awards' that will air on April 25 at 9PM. I'm a big fan of retro television (and Retro Television), and I like seeing a lot of stars both old and new get all dressed up and come together for a night of fun, craziness, and award-giving. Tim Allen as host? Great! You're going to honor Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari from 'Bosom Buddies?' Fantastic! A salute to 'Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks?' Outstanding!

I'm particularly excited about this year's show because from the promos I've seen, it looks like you're going to re-animate the dead.

Peter Boyle as a police officer who gets reincarnated into a talking bulldog? And you thought Cop Rock was the worst idea for a quirky cop show.

Check out this promo for Poochinski, a rejected pilot about man who presumably offends some whimsical Eastern god and comes back from the dead in dog puppet form.



You can't blame me for thinking this was a Funny or Die-style hoax, especially after that Tim Allen Arbor Daze video Bob posted earlier. But Poochinski was the real deal.

Peter Boyle dies at 71Sad news to report on an actor who graced our television screens for many years. Peter Boyle, who played Frank Barone on the CBS comedy Everybody Loves Raymond, died last night at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He was 71-years-old. According to his publicist Boyle was suffering from multiple myeloma and heart disease.

For many people he was known as the grumpy, obnoxious father of Ray Barone on Everybody Love Raymond. However, before that role he had a successful movie career starring in such films as Taxi Driver and The Candidate. His biggest role came in 1974 when he portrayed Frankenstein in Mel Brooks' comedy Young Frankenstein. The actors last appearance was as Father Time in Santa Claus 3.

What happens to pilots that don't make it?

George ClooneyDuring this upfronts week, you'll not only hear about the shows that make the schedule, you'll hear about pilots that didn't make it. But what happens to the pilots that don't make it? The pilots that are never seen by the public (unless they make it to the internet, which couldn't happen years ago), what happens to them? Forbes has an interesting article about failed pilots (and if you'd like to read a great book on failed pilots, try to track down a copy of Lee Goldberg's two books, Unsold Television Pilots I and II.)

Forbe's also lists the Top 10 Failed Pilots, and while it doesn't include Samurai (with Riptide's Joe Penny as a lawyer by day, sword-wielding superhero by night!), it does include Ethel Is An Elephant, about a guy who moves into a NYC apartment with an elephant roommate; Poochinski, with Peter Boyle as a cop who is killed on duty and comes back as a dog; Rewrite For Murder, with George Clooney and Pam Dawber as mystery writers; Wil Wheaton in 13 Thirteenth Avenue, about a kid who moves into a new apartment building and has vampires and werewolves as neighbors (!), and L.A. Confidential, a TV version of the movie, with Kiefer Sutherland! Wow, I actually would have loved to have seen that.
