Stephen Colbert may have made big news recently when he took his show on the road for a second time and performed for the troops in Iraq, but don't forget the other guy bringing fake news to the Middle East! Daily Show has been airing correspondent Jason Jones's reports from Iran, which were taped over the past month or so. Check out how many pockets are on that vest. He clearly means journalistic business.

NBC thought you said you wanted more Weekend Update

Weekend Update
It looks like NBC is going to expand Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update" segment with more half-hour specials, most likely on Thursday nights. Judging by the success of SNL and its Thursday night election specials during the campaign season, this move isn't too surprising. Plus, this is a progressive step in reaching the network's ultimate goal, which seems to be filling the airwaves with as many former SNL employees as possible. Actually, the next season of Celebrity Apprentice is probably just going to be all the early-90s players that aren't doing movies right now. And Rob Schneider. That guy isn't doing anything.

Sarah Palin wants to be one of the cool SNL kids

by Annie Wu, posted Oct 6th 2008 7:03PM
Fey and PoehlerNew York magazine has reported that the Saturday Night Live team is brainstorming some way to involve the real Sarah Palin in one of the upcoming "Weekend Update" episodes. Word is, she might play Tina Fey in a spoof of her American Express commercial. Granted, this will gain Palin some of those much needed cool points with the comedy crowd, but I'm having trouble picturing this actually coming to fruition. It's fun enough trying to picture what the writers would put her through, because they haven't made any attempts to hide how they feel about her.

Jon Stewart and Rob Riggle"All the Gori Details": Russia and Georgia's conflict rages on, even though everyone else is playing pool games at the Olympics. President Bush and company seem to think that this sort of conflict is, like, so old. The show managed to perfectly nail Condoleezza Rice's disapproval of overthrowing government. This was kind of depressing, actually. I would have liked to see more cartoon clips of Michael Phelps swimming against Black Manta.

Jon StewartThis particular episode of The Daily Show was super extra Chinese, but you guys get an extra layer of Chinese via this review written by me. That makes you special. The only way to push it even further would be for me to write this completely in Chinese. Consider yourselves lucky that I'm too embarrassed to write like that, as my Chinese vocabulary and syntax reads like that of a five year-old's.

Rob Riggle"Anti-Olympic Update": Instead of using sports as a metaphor for war, Russia has been juggling the Olympics and attacks on neighbor Georgia. I can never get enough of The Daily Show's graphics department. Just check out that hardcore anti-Olympic intro with the rings of doom. Jon Stewart got a lot of applause for that "Oh, war... It's just God's way of teaching Americans geography." Does it count as stealing if the joke is super, super old and reasonably well-known already?

Rob Riggle"Super News Blaster Breaking News Update": Reminding grumpy Republicans everywhere that the Daily Show considers the unfaithful on both sides of the aisle fair game, the show took on the latest sex scandal to rock the Hill. As it turns out, the allegations about Senator John Edwards having an affair with his former videographer were true. True! Over the weekend, I was briefly intrigued, but then found myself staring intently at her interesting fashion choices. I recall seeing her in a black top with a sequined peace sign at one point. Classy. As for me, superficial? Boy, am I!

Jon and JohnLast month, the show talked about Iraq's Prime Minister literally giving money away on the streets. As it turns out, they can afford to do this because the country has a multi-billion dollar budget surplus. Senior Financial Expert John Oliver stopped by to talk about what the Iraqis could do with their money, apart from rolling around in it, Scrooge McDuck style. I believe he made this joke a million times better with that jaunty little bounce. John and Jon proceeded to try and push their products, Alpacas and commemorative First Lady plates, respectively. These guys really need to fight more often.

The Daily Show's Race GenieI think I want -- need -- to know what Jon Stewart was talking about with his audience during the Q&A. What was that business about kissing with toothpaste in his mouth? Man, if only fangirls kept track of Jon's Q&A stories as closely as the Stephen Colbert's.

"Indecision 2008": John McCain's getting a lot of attention for his attack ads against Barack Obama. The coverage will never, ever end about the celebrity ad, because people love talking about Paris, Britney, and Barack, no matter how much they deny it. Talk about over-analyzing this nonsense. There's no doubting that race is an issue in this... race, but the media is definitely reading too much into the small stuff.

Daily Show"Dick Move of the Week": John McCain has been making more news with one of his new attack ads against Barack Obama, in which he calls Obama out for being an attention-seeking celebrity, just like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. That's not the bad part though. That honor goes to the fact that Paris' parents support McCain and have sent thousands of dollars for his campaign. Smooth move, my man. Smooth move.

The Daily Show"Illegally Blonde": For someone so adorably blonde, Monica Goodling sure did a lot of not-so-nice things. The former aide to the terribly forgetful Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez was recently accused of picking and choosing Justice Department job applicants in an unfair, illegal manner. To further prove that parts of the government still run like high school politics, Congress had a bitchy little back-and-forth about who got to the meeting first, right on C-SPAN3 when they should have been talking about illegal hiring. Stop acting like a spoiled cheerleader, Senator Tom Coburn.

Rapper or Republican?Quick news: Alaska's Senator Ted Stevens has been indicted for corruption charges. I knew The Daily Show would use any opportunity to bring out that clip of Stevens screaming, "NO!" I've missed that anger in my life.

Barack Obama recently returned form his trip the Middle East. In the meantime, John McCain has been struggling in the States, dealing with the likes of Schmidt's Sausage Haus and the Dalai Lama. I thought we were done talking about straight guy awkwardness the previous night. McCain looked terribly uncomfortable while the Dalai Lama held his hand. Just look at his other hand, fiddling with his suit pocket. He was probably all sweaty palms and clenched teeth that afternoon.

Oliver and Riggle"Easy, Pal... for the US Army": Sometimes I forget that there are still people that are scared of homosexuals, especially in the military. Thanks, Daily Show, for reminding of the existence of Elaine "Passive-Agressive Behavior" Donnelly and company. Congress recently had a hearing about gays in the military and the ever-popular "don't ask, don't tell" policy. This was almost as hilarious as whenever I see groups of straight guy-friends go to the movies together and sit with empty seats between each other so they won't be tempted to hold hands or something. Yeah, super-gay hand-holding is definitely worse than alcoholics and convicted felons. Icky.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly"Total (Lack of) Recall": Either the House Judiciary Committee loves talking about torture or they haven't been getting any answers during their hearings. Last week, they managed to pull John Ashcroft in for questioning, but they might as well have stayed at home. I can't look at John Ashcroft without thinking of "Let the eagle sooooar", so I'm glad that Jon Stewart brought it up. No mention of Robert Wexler's fantastic "I enjoy cocaine because it's a fun thing to do" from The Colbert Report, but we know everyone was thinking it.

Wyatt Cenac"Obama Quest: The Legend Begins": I guess the political comedy world has decided that the go-to digs on Barack Obama will be about the pressures of his golden boy image. Unfortunately, I can't say my middle school days were spent quite the same way, dealing with people making fun of how awesome I am. There are definitely worse ways to be mocked, is what I'm saying. Anyway, Mr. Obama has made his way to the Middle East for the first time, providing the Daily Show graphics department with the opportunity to make the most freakin' epic clip to accompany the report. Awesome. This trip also gave the media a chance to eagerly await a major cross-cultural faux pas. As it turns out, Obama has fangirls and fanboys all over the world.
