Whoops! Changing My Tune on Fall's 'Best' and 'Worst' New Shows

by Maureen Ryan, posted Nov 23rd 2011 10:00AM
Reviewing television isn't like reviewing any other form of entertainment: Every show on the air is a work in progress and can go from good to bad (and vice versa) in a matter of weeks.

Assessing debut episodes is especially tricky, given that they have so much to accomplish and not a lot of time for all that set-up. Still, earlier this year, I felt confident enough about what I'd seen to make lists of the season's most promising and least promising new shows.

Did those judgments hold up? Did those shows fall on their faces after promising debuts, or get a lot better after wobbly pilots? Both things happened, as you might have guessed.

Below, I take a second look 'Grimm,' 'Ringer' and 'Once Upon a Time,' in addition to several other new shows, and I pay special attention to the ABC comedy 'Suburgatory,' the most improved program of fall's freshman class.

by Crystal Bell, posted Nov 10th 2011 6:45PM
misha collins the ringer'Supernatural' star Misha Collins is set to guest star in an upcoming episode of the CW's 'Ringer,' reports TVGuide.com.

Collins will star as Dylan, someone from Bridget and Siobhan's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) past when they were in Tahoe. Dylan plays a pivotal role in the sisters' lives. As it turns out, he's part of a reason the sisters had a falling out.

Collins, known for playing Castiel on the CW's 'Supernatural,' will first appear alongside Gellar in episode 14, which means that we'll have to wait until after 'Ringer' returns from its midseason break to catch Collins in action.

Save Our Stars: Actors We Want to Rescue from Bad or Blah Shows

by Maureen Ryan, posted Nov 8th 2011 1:30PM
SOS ListIt happens every year: Disappointing new shows arrive on our TV screens, and they not only leave us cold, they also drag some of our favorite performers down into the muck of mediocrity. If only we could wave a magic wand and free these actors from disappointing or inconsistent vehicles!

As it stands, however, the majority of the shows listed below -- from 'Ringer' to 'American Horror Story' -- have been picked up for full seasons or given additional seasons. As you might imagine, this is not news that fills me with joy. I'd love to see the performers below released from their current gigs one way or another. I say this from love: If 'Ringer' killed off Nestor Carbonell's cop character, I wouldn't shed a tear. Rather, I'd rejoice at the idea that the actor would be free to be awesome on another (ideally excellent) program.

'Ringer,' 'Secret Circle,' 'Hart of Dixie' Get Full Seasons From The CW

by Crystal Bell, posted Oct 12th 2011 4:45PM
Ringer Gets Full SeasonUPDATE: The CW has gone pickup crazy. Not only has Sarah Michelle Gellar's new show, 'Ringer,' received a full-season pickup, the network has also ordered a full 22 episodes of fellow freshman dramas 'The Secret Circle' and 'Hart of Dixie.'

Gellar's anticipated return to TV brought in 2.7 million viewers, and 1.2 million in the 18-49 demographic, for its premiere -- a pretty good start according to the CW's standards. However, the dramatic thriller has been losing steam ever since.

During weeks two and three, the show scored a 0.9 in the 18-49 demographic. Then, the Oct. 4 episode's ratings dropped by 33 percent, to just a 0.6 in the 18-49 demographic. It rebounded on Oct. 11 to a 0.8 rating and 1.7 million viewers.

Ask Mo Returns! Answering Your Questions on 'Terra Nova,' 'Revenge,' 'Breaking Bad,' 'Ringer' and Much More

by Maureen Ryan, posted Oct 12th 2011 11:30AM
Thanks for all the great questions you sent in for this round of Ask Mo. I picked a bumper crop to take on this time. Let's get right to it, shall we?

Jamilbhatti0782: Do you think 'Terra Nova' will be picked up for a full season?

Mo says: Production wrapped last week on the first season of the dino drama, which was always envisioned as a 13-hour saga (according to a Fox representative, the show's 2-hour season finale airs Dec. 19). Any episodes beyond that would be part of a hypothetical second season, but the network hasn't yet decided whether to order a season 2. Given the show's high cost and relatively modest ratings, the jury is still out on whether we'll get a second season of dinosaur drama.

Which New Shows Have You Already Given Up On? Our DVR Discards

by AOL TV Staff, posted Oct 5th 2011 12:00PM
There's a moment of hope in the air right before the weather starts getting cooler, leaves start changing, back-to-school pencils get sharpened and new TV shows premiere for fall. In that blissful time, pilots seem like seedlings of hope, bursting with the possibility of something great, something must-see, something worthy of six seasons and a movie.

And then the shows all premiere and we quickly lose interest in a good majority of them. It's the law of DVR averages -- you just can't record everything.

'Pan Am': hit or miss?
We've already seen the first pick-up (Fox's 'New Girl') and first cancellation (NBC's 'Playboy Club') of the new fall TV season, but which of the new shows have we already given up on?

One of those (ahem -- you know who you are, bunnies!) dropped off all our season pass lists, while the adorkable one at the other end of the spectrum won most of us over ... but not all. Check out our gallery to see which new shows the AOL TV staff has said goodbye to*, and share your own failed attempts at finding entertainment in the comments.

*Editor's note: We haven't all said goodbye to all of these shows. We got one pick per person, and the opinions of each person do not reflect the opinions of the entire staff. Except where 'Playboy Club' is concerned. That was just bad.

Siobhan Discovers What Bridget Already Knows on 'Ringer' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 28th 2011 5:45AM
'Ringer' - 'If You Ever Want a French Lesson'To this point, 'Ringer' (Tue., 9PM ET on The CW) has mostly been Bridget's story, with the occasional crytpic jaunt to Paris to check in on her twin sister Siobhan. Quite frankly, at times it's looking like Shiv is trying to kill her own sister, but maybe that's what they want us to think.

One thing that may have slipped our radar, or maybe we just assumed she already knew, was that Siobhan was pregnant. Remember now everyone thinks Bridget is and she's kind of playing along.

Well, when Siobhan suddenly got sick while scoring with some random dude, she took a pregnancy test and realized what we'd already known. Will this throw a kink in whatever her plans are. On an impulse, she even called Henry -- the guy who's not her husband that she was sleeping with -- but didn't say anything.

Sarah Michelle Gellar Is Playing Identical Twins on 'Ringer,' But Thinks They're Creepy (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Sep 27th 2011 5:00PM
Sarah Michelle Gellar is playing twins Bridget and Siobhan Martin on her new CW thriller 'Ringer,' but she told 'Rachael Ray' (weekdays, syndicated) that having a real-life identical twin would freak her out.

"The whole duality is so interesting, because everybody is one way at work and you're one way at home. And being twins ... could you imagine someone who looked exactly like you? I think that's creepy actually," Gellar said.

On 'Ringer,' the twin sisters (obviously) look identical, but have very different personalities. Gellar she wouldn't want a real-life identical twin, but joked that she wouldn't mind having a drag impersonator, or even a male fraternal twin.
