Hardly Knew You: The Short-Lived Shows of 2010

by Rich Keller, posted Dec 20th 2010 5:40PM
'Lone Star,' which garnered huge pre-season buzz, was cancled by FOX after only two episodes. Not everything is a long-running classic in the fickle world that is television. You may feel that your show has the right mix of acting, writing and directing to be a favorite for indefinite first-run and syndicated airings, but the viewers may have other ideas.

And when that happens, your show could disappear before the cover art is even dry for the complete series DVD set.

The year 2010 had no shortage of these short timers. In fact, the 2010-2011 season has already seen not one, not two but three series that bowed out after only two episodes. This, despite long-promoted hype and pre-season buzz. Mentioned here are the 2010 programs that had shorter runs than the presidency of William Henry Harrison.

'Romantically Challenged' Officially Canceled by ABC

by Andrew Scott, posted May 16th 2010 5:00PM
Romantically ChallengedAs expected, ABC has officially canceled the sitcom 'Romantically Challenged,' starring Alyssa Milano.

The news was first reported last week by the Ausiello Files and seemed set in stone until Milano posted on Twitter that the announcement wasn't official. A last-minute Twitter campaign followed, but to no avail.

Mialno herself confirmed the news today on Twitter.

The series, co-starring 'Worst Week''s Kyle Bornheimer, was arguably doomed from the get-go after its premiere underperformed in the ratings. That night, the show drew 11.6 million viewers and 3.1 rating -- a disappointing number, considering its lead-in was ratings-juggernaut 'Dancing With the Stars.'

'Romantically Challenged' ends after the just one season.

In the meantime, ABC is set to announce its full fall lineup on Tuesday. Stay tuned to TV Squad for full coverage of the 2010 upfronts.

'V' Renewed; 'FlashForward,' 'Scrubs,' 'Better Off Ted,' 'Romantically Challenged' Axed

by Andrew Scott, posted May 13th 2010 11:54PM
VMore news coming from the ABC upfronts: The Live Feed is reporting that the network has officially renewed the alien-invasion series 'V' for a second season. The show, which co-stars Scott Wolf and 'Lost''s Elizabeth Mitchell, among others, is expected to be picked up for 13 episodes. (For more on ABC's pick-ups, click here.)

But it wasn't all good news. According to the Ausiello Files, ABC also pulled the plug on four series, including 'Scrubs,' confirming a Facebook message that star Zach Braff posted in March. 'Scrubs' ends after 9 seasons on the air, seven of which were spent on NBC.

Also getting the boot tonight: the Alyssa Milano comedy 'Romantically Challenged,' which got off to a sluggish start after its premiere in April and never really seemed to catch on, despite airing after ratings juggernaut 'Dancing With the Stars.'

(UPDATE: According to Milano's Twitter, ABC hasn't made an official decision on 'Challenged''s fate.)

'Romantically Challenged' Debut Is Challenged in Ratings

by Laura Prudom, posted Apr 20th 2010 4:00PM
Romance isn't the only thing that's proving challenging for ABC's new sitcom 'Romantically Challenged.' Apparently, its ratings are facing an uphill battle, too.

According to the Live Feed, the Alyssa Milano vehicle delivered "average" ratings on its Monday night debut, with a reasonable 11.6 million watchers and 3.1 in the adult demo. For any other timeslot, the bow would likely have been seen as a success, but with an epic lead-in from 'Dancing With the Stars' (which captured 20.8 million viewers and a 4.7 share), plus a couple minutes worth of overrun from the reality hit which likely boosted the numbers from 'Challenged,' the midseason sitcom could be in trouble before it's even begun.

(S01E01) Alyssa Milano is one of those actresses certain segments of the population gravitate to. Her latest project brings her back to her sitcom roots, in more ways than one. From the first scenes in the restaurant the "gang" hangs out in, 'Romantically Challenged' had all the trappings of an old school buddy sitcom.

What to Watch: April 19

by Kim Potts, posted Apr 19th 2010 6:00AM
'Romantically Challenged' (9:30PM, ABC) series premiere
Former 'Family Guy' writer Ricky Blitt created it, Emmy winner James Burrows directed the pilot and 'Who's the Boss?' and 'Charmed' star Alyssa Milano returns to the tube in this comedy, about a newly-single mom and attorney who's more than a little nervous about re-entering the dating scene after her divorce. Rebecca (Milano), in fact, hasn't dated "since Clinton was in office," and the fact that she's the mother of a 15-year-old son doesn't make finding a new love match any easier. Nor does her younger sister, Lisa, a sweet, protective woman who is way more sexually adventurous than Rebecca. Lisa's definition of making it two second base: a threesome.

Alyssa Milano On Returning to TV, Loving Twitter & Being 'Romantically Challenged'

by Maggie Furlong, posted Apr 12th 2010 9:00AM
Alyssa Milano, 'Romantically Challenged'Alyssa Milano is no stranger to network television. She practically grew up before our eyes on 'Who's the Boss?,' proved how naughty she could be on 'Melrose Place,' was bewitching on 'Charmed' and played Earl's crazy third wife on 'My Name is Earl.'

Now she's trying her hand at romantic comedy ... but don't expect 'Bachelor'-style dream dates or lovey-dovey relationships on 'Romantically Challenged' (premieres Mon., April 19, 9:32PM ET on ABC). Milano plays Rebecca, a recently divorced, dating-impaired 30-something with a group of friends as tragically unlucky in love as she is.

AOL TV talked to the multifaceted Milano about returning to TV, her iconic roles, Twitter, baseball and why she says that, before marriage, she was "the worst dater on the planet."

Another Delay for Alyssa Milano and 'Romantically Challenged'

by Rich Keller, posted Apr 7th 2010 8:00AM
Alyssa Milano's new series, 'Romantically Challenged' is bumped down to an April 19th premiereIt must be frustrating for stars when their new shows, which are supposed to premiere at a certain date, keep getting pushed back. Not only does that keep their professional lives on hold, but it probably gives them a feeling that the networks are not too thrilled with their product.

Such is the case with Alyssa Milano's new ABC comedy 'Romantically Challenged.' Previously given the premiere date of next Monday, April 12th, the show has been moved back a week to April 19th. The most likely reason for the change is for the show's lead-in -- 'Dancing With the Stars' -- to squeeze in another two-hour stint to pump up their ratings. In a counter-opinion, Alyssa gave this as the reason for the date switch on her Twitter account: "No freakin' clue."

As a former teenager who crushed (all right, still crushes) on Milano, my opinion is probably jaded. Nevertheless, she should be given a chance to succeed or fail. Here's hoping ABC is priming her for success rather than cutting their losses where they can.

Alyssa Milano Is 'Romantically Challenged'

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 30th 2010 8:05PM
Alyssa MilanoNo, that's not an assumption on the actress' amorous ways, although I'm willing to put that assumption to the test if she's particularly irked by it.

The 'Who's the Boss,' 'Charmed' and 'Melrose Place' star has landed a new sitcom on ABC that can easily earn some steam since it's airing after 'Dancing with the Stars.'

'Romantically Challenged,' a sitcom about a recent divorcee looking for signs of life after marriage, will start airing on Monday, April 12 after 'DWTS.' The show is created by former 'Family Guy' writer Ricky Blitt and James Burrows has been tapped to direct it.

It sounds ridiculously simple and run-of-the-mill in terms of creativity, but sometimes the simplest ideas have the potential to catch fire. Does the show have the potential to be hot or will it go up in flames?
