Ricky Gervais Back as Golden Globes Host, a 'True Blood' Vamp on 'Castle' & More TV News

by Maggie Furlong, posted Aug 28th 2011 1:30PM
Ricky GervaisRicky Gervais made headlines -- most of them not very positive -- for making some racy jokes when he hosted the Golden Globes back in January. Critics said he'd never be invited back after skewering some of Hollywood's biggest stars and even the Hollywood Foreign Press Association behind the awards.

Now Gervais claims that NBC has asked him to return to host the awards again next year. But looks like the joke's on them now, since he's not sure he even wants to do it again.

As for his critics, Gervais had this to say at the Edinburgh International Television Festival: "Just because you are offended doesn't mean you are right. People fall into this myth that I'm a shock comedian. I've never been that. People say I crossed the line but I didn't draw the f***ing line, you did."

He still maintains that his jokes were for the show's 200 million viewers around the world, not for the 200 "most privileged people on the planet" in attendance.

Gervais isn't above turning down good offers -- he claims he also said no to hosting the Oscars ("It's a thankless task for a comedian. They don't want to hear jokes, they want to hear if they have won the most important award of their career."), and to having his own American talk show ("I have been offered it a few times. I got into this business so I didn't have to put a suit on and sit behind a desk five times a week.").

Fallon as Goat Leg Greg 'Ruminates' on 'Jersey Shore' With Ryan Reynolds (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 5th 2011 6:29AM
'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'With 'Jersey Shore' back amongst us, Jimmy Fallon slipped into his Goat Leg Greg persona to "ruminate" on the various personalities in rhyme form on 'Late Night' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET on NBC).

He convinced Ryan Reynolds to don an even worse costume, with ridiculous horse teeth, to help set up his lyrical bombs.

The dialogue was so beyond a parody of Olde English that it's impossible to describe. In praising Fallon's poetic wit, Reynolds said, "It's as if you words hath given birth to themselves and raised them betwixt the Belgian bosoms of brilliance."

Ricky Gervais Defends His Right to Make Fun of Hollywood Actors on 'Today' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 3rd 2011 2:20PM
Ricky Gervais, Jason Bateman, and Ryan Reynolds on 'Today'Ricky Gervais was cutting and funny hosting the Golden Globes, but the buzz after the show was about how many people were offended by his jokes. He managed to burn some bridges with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization behind the awards. Now Gervais has been nominated for an Emmy for that performance. He spoke with Matt Lauer on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) about the experience, and got into a little tussle with Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds.

Lauer said he thought Gervais's hosting was brilliant, but said others thought his jokes had crossed a line. "I crossed the line?" said Gervais. "Who drew the line? I didn't draw the line. Where's this line?" He seemed perplexed by the idea.

Ryan Reynolds Tried for Chivalry, Nearly Got Sexual Assault With Olivia Wilde (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 2nd 2011 4:22AM
Ryan Reynolds, 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno'Sex scenes are uncomfortable for everyone involved. That's why when you see one that you believe, you know you're looking at some really good acting. It's even more intimidating when you're acting opposite one of Hollywood's hottest "it" girls, as Ryan Reynolds was. He talked on 'The Tonight Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC) about how he made that experience even worse.

"I'm trying not to look at her like a 14-year old boy who just won the lady lottery," he said of the moment when Olivia Wilde put his hands on her breasts for their scene in 'The Change-Up.' He was a little nervous, and admitted his palms were sweaty. Apparently, a little too sweaty.

Larry the Cable Guy Mixes It Up With Kristin Chenoweth on 'Regis' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 15th 2011 1:35PM
Larry the Cable Guy, Regis Philbin, and Kristin Chenoweth on 'Live With Regis and Kelly'If you're promoting anything this week on the TV talk show circuit, there's a good chance you'll be following Ryan Reynolds, whose 'Green Lantern' officially hits theaters Friday. On 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated) Wednesday to promote 'Cars 2,' Larry the Cable Guy found a notable drop in enthusiasm when his turn in the interview chair came up.

Regis Philbin did his part to hype Larry, saying, "There's only one guy in the country who could follow Mr. Beautiful, and that's Larry the Cable Guy." But Larry noticed when the two were announced as guests at the top of the show, Reynolds' name got guest co-host Kristin Chenoweth excited. Not so much for Larry, who feigned indignation. "Here I stand, three hours a day in the gym, and I don't get nothing," he said.

"What are you doing there, hanging out?" replied Chenoweth. It's not all Larry's fault. He plays Mater, the tow truck in 'Cars 2,' and he said he had to gain weight for the role.

Ryan Reynolds: Having My Own Action Figure Is Cooler Than Being 'Sexiest Man Alive' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 15th 2011 12:50PM
Ryan Reynolds talks about 'Green Lantern' on 'Today'Landing the title role in the summer blockbuster 'Green Lantern' was a boon for actor Ryan Reynolds. Being named People's "Sexiest Man Alive" wasn't too shabby either, but playing Green Lantern has an edge, Reynolds said Wednesday on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC), because the role comes with his own action figure.

"My nephew is obsessed with these things right now," said Reynolds. "That's sort of a bigger win in the long run." He also got to play on high wires to simulate flying, which Reynolds said sometimes propelled him at speeds of 60 feet per second. "It was really interesting, and really terrifying at first, but then I got into it," he said.

Thought the stunts might have scared Reynolds, he kept his nieces and nephews in mind as motivation, thinking about how excited they were about the film. A Green Lantern fan might say it gave him the sheer force of will.

Ryan Reynolds Recalls a High-Flying, Near-Death Experience on 'Letterman' (VIDEO)

by Mike Moody, posted Jun 15th 2011 3:12AM
ryan reynoldsIt sounds like Ryan Reynolds was in need of his 'Green Lantern' power ring during a recent skydiving adventure.

The star dropped by 'The Late Show With David Letterman' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS) to talk about his penchant for jumping out of airplanes -- he's done it 13 times -- as well as that one time when his parachute didn't open.

Luckily, Reynolds was packing a reserve 'chute, but he was reluctant to pull it because, as he said, "then I'd have none left!"

Betty White Spreads Rumors About Her and Ryan Reynolds on 'The Tonight Show' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 23rd 2010 4:20AM
'The Tonight Show'By now, everybody knows that Betty White is quite the little rascal. So it's no wonder that she was ready to start spreading rumors about her and Ryan Reynolds on 'The Tonight Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM on NBC). A rather intentional slip of the tongue and the gossip rags would be all over it with headlines like 'Octogenarian Cougar Betty White's Sordid Affair With Ryan Reynolds. Wife Scarlett Johansson Enraged, But Not Surprised.'

The pair were together across from Leno when the host asked if White had any dirt on Reynolds, to which she knowingly replied, "No, I've never had him. I mean, had any dirt on him."

Reynolds called her on it. "Always starting rumors," he said.

"Oh well sure," she responded. "Why not?"

Ryan Reynolds Returning to TV?

by Chris Harnick, posted Sep 14th 2010 5:12PM
Ryan ReynoldsRyan Reynolds -- you know, the blockbuster movie star from flicks such as 'The Proposal' and the upcoming 'Green Lantern' -- might be returning to his roots with a new TV series.

NBC has nabbed 'Mayors of Casterbridge,' a script from Reynolds' Dark Trick Films. According to Deadline Hollywood, if the project goes to pilot, Reynolds will not star -- instead, he'll be the executive producer. However, he is expected to cameo and could potentially recur on the series.

'Mayors of Casterbridge' has been described as 'Old School' meets 'Gran Torino,' it follows four elderly men who find their community on the way toward becoming a cookie-cutter housing complex. The four men bond in an effort to return their neighborhood to its past glory and help each other out with various life challenges.

by Donald Deane, posted Jan 7th 2010 12:15PM
George Lopez couldn't resist taking a potshot at Tiger Woods as he read the nominees for Favorite Movie Actress at the 36th Annual People's Choice Awards yesterday. He also took a well-deserved jab at friend and winner, Sandra Bullock, for her role in the abysmal 'Speed 2: Cruise Control.'

Bullock, who bested Jennifer Aniston, Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart and Drew Barrymore for the award, responded with a Woods joke of her own during her acceptance speech, then pointed out the eerie similarities between her hairdo and Nicole Kidman's.

Saturday Night Live: Ryan Reynolds/Lady Gaga

After that Jenny Slate f-bomb nonsense and Megan Fox's not terribly original hot girl material from the season premiere, it was exciting to see a really solid episode (and a star-studded one, at that). Ryan Reynolds did a fantastic job as host (snaps for his wavering voice during the porcelain fountains sketch and accent in SYTYCD), though he didn't have any major stand-out roles. Did I miss the memo that Lady Gaga wasn't just musical guest but co-host as well? Such a role is normally left up to Ryan Reynolds' giant biceps.

It's been a while since we've seen such consistently enjoyable writing in an episode. Usually, there's a distinct lull during the course of the 90 minutes, but I didn't feel it this time. Hopefully, this is a good indication of the rest of the season.

American Idol: Ryan's Beard

by Lacy Hall, posted Apr 5th 2006 11:45AM

american idolLast night's Idol was one of the liveliest shows in the past few weeks. Not because of the performances, but because of everybody else. First off , Whoopi and Chris Rock? When I first spotted them in the crowd, I rewinded my DVR five times to verify that it was them. On the fourth rewind, I had them pegged as impersonators...and darn good ones. But nope, it was them. How funny is it that Chris Rock & Whoopi show up on country night? They're both huge Kenny Rodgers fans, I'm sure.

And it appears that Ryan (like so many men recently) has gone the way of the beard.
