Good News! Sharks May Not Like the Taste of Humans (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Aug 2nd 2011 6:15PM
'Rogue Sharks' on Discovery for Shark WeekHere's a comforting discovery that might help you get through Shark Week: sharks may not enjoy the taste of people. According to 'Rogue Sharks' (Tuesday, 9PM on Discovery), even on the rare occasion that sharks bite humans, in most cases, they don't make a meal of it.

The report examined a series of shark attacks on Northern California's Salmon Creek Beach in 2005, recreating an attack on surfer Megan Halavais. Halavais had been surfing when a Great White attacked, dragging her under by the leash on her surf board. She was bitten on the leg, but both she and shark experts found the nature of wound puzzling. "My scars are so clean, it's literally like it bit me and then lifted its teeth back out so gently."

'The Late Late Show' Goes to France, Talks Sharks With Jean Reno and Kristen Bell (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 2nd 2011 5:52AM
Kristen Bell & Jean Reno, 'The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson'Even though he was taping in Paris, Craig Ferguson was still sensitive to the fact that these episodes of 'The Late Late Show' (Weeknights, 12:37AM ET) would be airing during "Shark Week" in the United States.

Or maybe it was Kristen Bell who should get the credit, as she's the one who brought up sharks when they were talking to French actor Jean Reno. Stewart is Ferguson's traveling companion for the week.

She related a story about when she was filming 'Couples Retreat' in Bora Bora with Reno. He treated the cast to a once in a lifetime experience swimming with sharks courtesy of the chief diver from his film 'The Big Blue.'

Andy Samberg On Staying Alive as Shark Week's Chief Shark Officer (EXCLUSIVE VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 29th 2011 9:05AM
Andy Samberg, Shark WeekAndy Samberg has a lot of weight on his shoulders as Shark Week 2011's Chief Shark Officer. But, just how did the 'Saturday Night Live' funnyman get this "jawesome" gig?

"I think I'm Chief Shark Officer for obvious reasons," Samberg said. "I love sharks, I'm a really bad swimmer, Justin Timberlake passed. What else? Mainly the third one."

In the exclusive video interview below, Samberg, while soaking wet and standing in the ocean, details his experiences as Chief Shark Officer.

"The worst thing about being Chief Shark Officer is that I had to go to the Bahamas! It doesn't smell like whiz or homeless people anywhere here," he joked. "I'm just so homesick. It's going to be so sucky when I have to go back."

Shark Week 2011: Break Out the Floss (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Jul 5th 2011 6:00PM
Shark WeekShark Week is right around the corner -- thank goodness! -- and with it comes a brand new promo. This isn't just any new promo. No, Discovery has tapped Lady Gaga's 'Teeth' as background to clips of sharks biting things.

With lyrics as descriptive as "Show me your teeth!" it's quite fitting actually. However, this isn't the first time Lady Gaga's 'Teeth' has been used to promote a popular program involving sharp-toothed stars. Nope, The CW did it with 'The Vampire Diaries' and it was equally appropriate.

Watch both promos below. Shark Week begins July 31 at 9PM.

Dun dun ... dun dun .. dun dun ...

Adrenaline junkies everywhere are in the thick of Discovery Channel's most terrifying programming block of the year: Shark Week. And despite the fact that the mere mention of sharks sends most people running, the once-a-year, week-long dedication to the deadly creature repeatedly kills it in ratings.

The series is mind-blowing, raw, bloody, shocking ... the list goes on. Audiences expect the best from The Discovery Channel, and they're rarely disappointed. Which is why we're thrilled that Discovery has officially joined the trendy new FLO TV network, allowing fans to enjoy favorite shows wherever they go.

For those of you who don't know, FLO TV is a new mobile TV service that can be accessed on your phone, in your car or on personal viewing device PTV. Basically, it's non-stop, on-the-go entertainment - can't hate on that!

Craig Ferguson Swims with Sharks (VIDEO)

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 3rd 2010 12:22PM
Craig FergusonIt's Shark Week, the annual celebration of all things shark on Discovery Channel. It's amazing how big it has become, since it seems to be a very niche subject on a cable channel, but everyone seems to love it. Even people who don't watch it seem to love that the week exists.

One of the things you can see this week on the network is Craig Ferguson. 'The Late, Late Show' host loves sharks so he went on a dive and swam with a ton of sharks and lived to tell Julie Chen about it on 'The Early Show' (weekdays at 7AM ET on CBS).

Ferguson says he was scared as hell. I think we all would be. (Shark Week is running all this week on Discovery Channel.)

What My Kids Are Watching: Shark Week

by Sandie Angulo Chen, posted Aug 2nd 2010 1:00PM
Shark WeekIt's a sacred week in my house -- otherwise known as Shark Week on Discovery.

In the hierarchy of annual milestones, Shark Week -- which is celebrating its 23rd consecutive year on the air -- ranks only lower than Christmas and birthday but definitely higher than any of the non-gift-giving holidays.

It's even more anticipated than ABC Family's annual Harry Potter Marathon Weekend, because at the end of the day I can recreate that marathon with our personal stash of DVDs, but no one can recreate the excitement, the awe, the occasional terror that comes along with Discovery's annual shark extravaganza.

Close Encounters of the Shark Kind on 'Ultimate Air Jaws' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Aug 2nd 2010 4:10AM
Close Encounters with Sharks on 'Ultimate Air Jaws'Discovery's 23rd annual Shark Week first flashed its pointy teeth with 'Ultimate Air Jaws' (Sun., 9PM ET on DSC). The special featured Chris Fallows in a vulnerable little kayak surrounded by Great White Sharks. Waving his paddle in the water led one shark to bring its nose up into the boat.

Then the animal "gently marked the paddle" (i.e., chewed it), and Fallows explained, "a moving object that potentially looks like a small seal or something like that certainly draws her attention." Certainly does.

Fallows moved on to watch the sharks from inside a tiny submarine. Then again above water, Fallows photographed the massive fish with a special HD camera, capturing them jumping straight up in the air in 2,000 frames per second.

Shark Week 2010: Dun Dun ... Dun Dun ... It's Baaack!

Shark Week 2010
Like that great TV philosopher, Tracy Jordan, advised his co-worker pal Kenneth, we should all live every week like it's Shark Week.

Fortunately, this week -- starting Sunday night -- actually is Shark Week, Discovery Channel's annual lineup of programming dedicated to the sea dog (as sharks were known until the 16th century).

This year's Shark Week, the network's 23rd such celebration, kicks off with a new special called 'Ultimate Air Sharks' (Sunday, 9PM) and will be hosted by famous Shark Week devotee Craig Ferguson.

The Show Girl Talks 'Covert Affairs,' Shark Week & Tony Robbins (VIDEO)

by Maggie Furlong, posted Jul 9th 2010 10:00AM
'Covert Affairs' stars Chris Gorham & Piper PeraboAre you still looking for a sexy new summer TV show? Let me officially recommend 'Covert Affairs.' It's fun and 'Alias'-ish with a pretty impressive cast. Not enough? Let stars Piper Perabo and Christopher Gorham sell you on it then.

If your tastes lean more toward the feel-good uplifting kind of shows, self-help guru Tony Robbins will motivate you to watch his new specials 'Breakthrough with Tony Robbins' because, in his words, it isn't "namby-pamby B.S." (In my words, the man takes everyone to Fiji to relax and refocus. Where do I volunteer?) I also have a TV event that, at this point, needs very little promotion: Shark Week! What can I say, I'm a fan.

Craig Ferguson to Host Shark Week

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 15th 2010 1:20PM
Craig Ferguson of the 'Late Late Show' to host Shark Week on the Discovery ChannelScotland native Craig Ferguson has never been shy about diving head-first into American traditions. Ferguson made his quest for U.S. citizenship a part of his 'Late Late Show' (he became an official citizen in 2008), and begins his nightly monologue with the phrase, "It's a great day for America."

On last night's show, Ferguson announced he will host Shark Week on the Discovery Channel, another fine American tradition in which, for one week, the country turns its attention to those relentless beasts from the briny deep.

Shark Week + tree bark = ... hilarity?

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 11th 2009 7:00PM
Usually I post videos that I think are funny, interesting, clever, or maybe important. This one I'm posting because it's unfunny, silly, and only important because it shows what the Tonight Show is like now (unfortunately).

Last week Discovery had Shark Week. Last night, Conan showed up a preview of Bark Week. Yeah, a week dedicated to tree bark. This is one of the reasons I can't get into the Tonight Show. It seems like they're throwing every lame idea for a video into the show. Conan and Andy are funny guys, but there's so much on this show that just kills it (and I still hate Conan's mugging after every video and joke, and his painful introductions to bits).

Is Shark Week cool or does it just, um, bite?

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 4th 2009 10:30AM
sharkSorry for the lame headline.

We're in the middle of the Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week celebration, a whole of programming involving sharks, sharks, sharks, sharks, and the people who love/fear them. But David Zurawik over at The Baltimore Sun doesn't understand why some people get excited about it. He wants someone to explain its appeal.

What do you think of Shark Week?
It's great! I watch it every year.177 (36.6%)
It's terrible! I mean, who cares about sharks?46 (9.5%)
I don't watch it, but whatevs260 (53.8%)
