Here are the new TV DVDs, in stores tomorrow.

Wow ... M.A.N.T.I.S.! Remember this show? It lasted for 23 episodes on FOX back in 1994-95. I had completely forgotten that it starred Carl Lumley from Alias as the superhero. I didn't think it would ever come out on DVD (or maybe I should say I didn't really think of it at all in the past few years), and now here it is with a complete series set. By the way, the letters stand for Mechanically Automated NeuroTransmitter Interactive System.

As for The Love Boat, I knew that was going to be out on DVD, but I'm not going to buy it.

Last time on 'Saturday Morning' we took at look at the ambitious NBC schedule of the 1973-74 television season. This time we will examine the lineups for ABC and CBS during that time period.

At a quick glance, both networks maintained the 'primetime' look that was established by ABC the season before by adding a number of shows that featured animated versions of nighttime television characters. This was in addition to the shows that already existed, which made this one of the first seasons where real-life characters nearly outnumbered imaginary ones. This was also the first year for the 'all-star' genre of cartoons. ABC featured two of these types of programs, both featuring characters well-known to a previous generation of Saturday morning viewers.

Seventeen. That is the number of premieres that aired during the 1973-74 Saturday morning schedule. It marked the largest number of premieres since original fare began to be offered during the 1965-66 season. It also marked an official shift in the what the networks decided was rating-getting Saturday morning fare.

Taking an example from ABC's successful Saturday morning schedule during the 1972-73 season, the other networks loaded up their time slots with animated versions of its primetime related fare. There was also a lack of animated rock bands. With The Osmonds, Jackson 5ive and Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan off the schedule only one band (and one solo performer) joined the fray this time around.

The 1973-74 season also marked the return of some old Saturday morning favorites: Yogi Bear, Huckleberry Hound, Batman, Superman and Aquaman. After a bit of a vacation these characters returned to the airwaves in new formats. For all, it would be the beginning of a long-running Saturday morning relationship that would last well into the 80s.

Even when I was a little kid, there were some things about the Super Friends (or Superfriends or Superamigos, or whatever they were calling it) that didn't sit right with me. Maybe it was because the confluence of superpowers all in one place just boggled my young mind. Maybe it was the mysterious change from Wendy and Marvin to the Wonder Twins that made me scratch my tiny noggin. Not sure. But those mysteries continue to fascinate me, even into adulthood. It's just that those mysteries are more sophisticated:

1. How did the Super Friends have time to hang out at the Hall of Justice? Every one of the SFs lived in different parts of the country: Batman and Robin were in Gotham City, for instance. So, did B&R commute from Gotham to Metropolis a few times per week? Did they use the Bat Plane or the Batmobile most of the time? Did they claim the mileage on their taxes?

In the annals of humankind there have been many debates that have crossed generations without one clear winner on one side or the other. Some of the more famous debates have been: what came first, the chicken or the egg; creationism vs. evolution; Cubs vs. White Sox; and what was the better Pauly Shore movie -- Encino Man or Bio-Dome. Yet, no other debate has shown such passionate division, such anger, such incomprehensible argument than one about a certain 70s Saturday morning cartoon featuring a scantily clad woman with a lasso and a man who lurked the alleyways at night to purposely scare people.

I speak about the Hanna-Barbera series Super Friends and the on-going debate about if the show was better before or after the Wonder Twins appeared.

Ever since they appeared on Saturday morning, The Super Friends have been a veritable gold mine for wacky videos. The following is a short list of some of my favorite short videos starring Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the gang.

A television game that I've played since I was a kid and still play today is what it would be like it certain television shows crossed over with other shows. Obviously, I'm not the only one as proven by this YouTube video.

Since both properties (Super Friends and Friends) are owned by Warner Brothers, this crossover would be possible without anybody needing to acquire rights. Perhaps it could be a new show for the Cartoon Network.

Let me be honest here...I got thanks coming out of the wazoo. I have a wonderful family, a good job, food on the table, clothes on my back, and a roof over my head. Plus, I am dashingly handsome, which allowed me to obtain the wonderful family, the good job, etc. But, since this isn't Slashfood or ParentDish I'm really not going to list why I am thankful for the items I listed.

No, this is a list describing why I am thankful for the most important piece of my life: television (Uh, don't tell my wonderful family about that). I mean, without television I would probably be an incredibly literate scholar of 17th century mathematics who is a hit at social gatherings. And, that would pretty much suck, wouldn't it? Television is where it's at, baby, and here are some reasons why I'm thankful for it.

(S05E17) As I got into this episode, two things occurred to me. First, since next week is the season finale, when did they decide to cut this season to 18 episodes? More importantly for our purposes here though, this episode felt very familiar. It took a minute, but when Lois and Mayor West got to the debate, I remembered what it was. The main story was very similar to the season two episode, "Running Mates."

"I'm gonna end up doing it because, uh, I'm a big pussy. Which is why I work at Intertech to begin with."

A lot of you might remember that line from the cult hit Office Space. It was said by Ron Livingston (now on Standoff), but now it's being said by the Man of Steel himself, Superman. Someone has mashed together dialogue from the movie with an episode of The Superfriends, and the results are, well, super.

The great part about this is how the person who did it actually gets the casting down perfectly. Superman, the way he is drawn here, actually does look like Livingston, and The Green Lantern really does look like Gary Cole. The editing is well done too, even getting the facial expressions and reaction shots down. I also like how Aquaman is the sleazy horndog in the group. I always suspected that about him.

Back in the early 2000's (wow, I can't believe I just wrote that!), Budwiser ran an extremely successful advertising campaign for its Budwiser beer that most simply called 'Wassup?'. It featured a bunch of guys sitting around, watching a game and drinking their beers, while calling their friends. The extent of their phone conversations was "Wassup?" over and over in a humorous manner.

As its popularity grew so did the Internet parodies, which included South Park, Teletubbies and Super Friends. The Super Friends spot actually became quite a World Wide Web phenomenon, long before the creation of YouTube. However, once the advertising campaign ended, those parodies also faded away and were simply forgotten.

That is, until today, when I found several copies of the Super Friends Wassup parody on ... you guessed it ... YouTube. I watched it again and still think it's hilarious. Take a look for yourself after the jump and let me know what you think.
