Five British TV Shows to Catch on DVD

by Nick Zaino, posted Oct 3rd 2010 1:30PM
British TV is definitely more visible in America these days. BBC America reaches about 68 million homes, according to its press site, and features a few shows every TV fan probably recognizes, like 'Doctor Who' and 'Top Gear.' But it's still behind some of its basic cable brethren.

According to TV By the Numbers, the April premiere of 'Doctor Who' series 5 set ratings records for the network with 1.2 million viewers. That's a lot of people, but dwarfed in comparison to the 5.3 million who watched the 'Jersey Shore' season 2 debut in July.

The US Should Co-Produce TV Shows with the UK

by Jason Hughes, posted May 1st 2010 6:28PM
'Survivors'
A few years back, a bold co-production initiative was launched with Canada. So far, it's produced underwhelming ratings performers like 'Mental' and 'Defying Gravity.' Meanwhile, thanks to BBC America, US fans are falling in love with new UK shows, only to find ourselves frustrated when the powers-that-Beeb pull the plug. It's a lot like foreign fans of US material must feel when we cancel shows on them: powerless.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Most recently, BBC America finished running the first and second series of the BBC post-apocalyptic drama 'Survivors,' back-to-back. Before it finished, the BBC announced that they weren't going to commission any more episodes, due to slipping ratings in the UK. 'Survivors' wasn't failing miserably, but BBC programming doesn't get advertising revenue like shows in the US, so expectations are different.

I don't know if US ratings were considered for the show, but I know it was one of the more popular series on BBC America and that it has a pretty loyal and faithful following on both sides of the pond. Could US support have saved it?

BBC America getting more sci-fi

by Brad Trechak, posted Feb 5th 2009 3:02PM
BBC AmericaBBC America has added two new science fiction shows to their line-up, along with a new season of Primeval.

The first is a show called Being Human, which focuses on the "lives" of a werewolf, vampire and ghost. Where's the zombie roommate? My guess is that each supernatural character will represent some sort of minority. That didn't work so well for a series called Cavemen.

The second is called Survivors, which is similar in theme to Stephen King's The Stand. This is a remake of the original 1970's series of the same name. It was created by Terry Nation (who started it as a book), who is famous in England for creating sci-fi cult hit Blake's 7 and the Doctor Who aliens The Daleks. My only question is: who created the concept first, King or Nation? This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Both shows have already broadcast in England. Having not seen them, I can offer no opinion. If anybody has seen them, let us know in the comments if they're worth catching.

HBO's White Light/Black Rain: The Destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki airs tonight

by Adam Finley, posted Aug 6th 2007 2:02PM

white light/black rainAn HBO documentary about the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki will air this evening at 7:30 p.m.

The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, occurring on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, ended the second World War. In an era when many of the people who fought in --and were affected by the war-- are disappearing, expect to see more documentaries about WW II as filmmakers attempt to record survivors recollections for posterity.
