John Travolta and Cast of 'Welcome Back, Kotter' Honored at 'TV Land Awards' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 18th 2011 4:07AM
John Travolta of 'Welcome Back, Kotter' - '2011 TV Land Awards'Despite enormous breakout popularity in its first two seasons, 'Welcome Back, Kotter' never managed to win any awards. It created catch-phrases and made instant stars of its cast, but it wasn't until its 35th anniversary at the '2011 TV Land Awards' (Sun., 9PM ET on TV Land) that the cast were honored for their work on the series.

"I think it's a little overdue, but thank you very much," said Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, who played Freddie 'Boom-Boom' Washington. "Thank you for the award. Thank you for honoring us and the legacy."

Series co-creator and star Gabe Kaplan talked about how the show was largely inspired by his own upbringing and particularly his multicultural group of friends.

'The Facts of Life' Cast Reunites on 'TV Land Awards 2011' (VIDEO)

'The Facts of Life' cast on '2011 TV Land Awards''The Facts of Life' ran for nine seasons, and managed to thrive and find success through multiple cast shake-ups and a complete overhaul of its premise. That was thanks to the charm and delight of its central cast, and it was these women who were celebrated on the '2011 TV Land Awards' (Sun., 9PM ET on TV Land) with the Pop Culture Award.

The show touched our hearts and even broke ground with many of its story lines. Geri Jewell became the first person with cerebral palsy to have a regular role on prime-time television, and she spoke of how the show was a turning point for her.

'The Cosby Show' Cast Reunites to Accept the TV Land Impact Award (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 18th 2011 12:48AM
Bill Cosby and the cast of 'The Cosby Show' at '2011 TV Land Awards'It was appropriate, considering 'The Cosby Show' was the brain child of Bill Cosby, that the comedian was the only one who spoke when the cast was on stage to accept their Impact Award at the '2011 TV Land Awards' (Sun., 9PM ET on TV Land). Cosby was charming and funny, lamenting that he had just watched all of his "children" drinking. Still, it would have been nice to hear from some of the other cast members.

The award was presented by Stevie Wonder, and Cosby spent a good chunk of his time riffing with the legendary musician, when we suspect fans of 'The Cosby Show' would have preferred him talk more about his inspiration for the show, how he feels the show influenced television, or even some classic Cosby grumbling about the world today.

Raven-Symone, TV Land Awards, The Cosby ShowBy Breia Brissey
Tonight's TV Land Awards will bring together the cast of 'The Cosby Show' for the first time in years.

When TV Squad caught up with Raven-Symoné a few weeks ago at the ABC Family upfronts, the now-25-year-old former 'Cosby Show' star said she was excited for the cast to receive the TV Land Impact Award.

"I loved working with Bill Cosby. And it's such an honor to end up on TV Land," Symoné said. "I mean, it's weird because I'm only 25 and on TV Land! But when I was little, I was only allowed to watch TV Land and the cooking network, so it's really cool."

Two decades after she started on the iconic series, the actress formerly known as little Olivia Kendall has a new show of her own. She'll return to TV with ABC Family's 'State of Georgia' (formerly known as 'The Great State of Georgia') in June.

Yup, Tom Hanks Really is a Nice Guy

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 19th 2010 5:03PM
Bosom Buddies cast
It would have been so easy for Tom Hanks to skip the 'Bosom Buddies' reunion yesterday during the taping of the TV Land Awards, which will air next Sunday night at 9PM. He's one of the biggest movie stars in the world, appearing in more popular and/or critically-acclaimed and/or biggest-grossing modern movies than most other actors, so why in hell would he even bother to go to the reunion of some low-rated show he was on 30 years ago for only 37 episodes?

Because he's Tom Hanks, that's why.

An Open Letter to TV Land About the TV Land Awards

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 15th 2010 11:19AM
Peter BoyleDear TV Land,

I'm very excited about the 'TV Land Awards' that will air on April 25 at 9PM. I'm a big fan of retro television (and Retro Television), and I like seeing a lot of stars both old and new get all dressed up and come together for a night of fun, craziness, and award-giving. Tim Allen as host? Great! You're going to honor Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari from 'Bosom Buddies?' Fantastic! A salute to 'Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks?' Outstanding!

I'm particularly excited about this year's show because from the promos I've seen, it looks like you're going to re-animate the dead.

carl_reiner_mel_brooks_1963TV Land will be honoring some of the greats of television, some from the golden age of TV, some from just a few years back, and even the greats of tomorrow? How's that? Well, look at the line up: Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner, the creators of 'The 2000 Year Old Man' among other comic gems, the cast of 'Everybody Loves Raymond,' a salute to Farrah Fawcett by the other 'Charlie's Angel' stars, and with a wink toward the future, a celebration of 'Glee.'

What did you think of the TV Land Awards? - open thread

by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 27th 2009 5:20PM
TV Land logoThe thing that gets me about the TV Land Awards is this: they're celebrating the types of TV shows that TV Land will one day not even show anymore.

But before reality shows and movies take over the network, it's kinda fun to see the casts of Magnum, P.I. (too bad John Hillerman wasn't there) and Home Improvement again (but still no Jonathan Taylor Thomas ... guess that tension is still alive all these years later). Neil Patrick Harris was a good host, and the lineup of old and new stars they had is actually quite impressive.

What did you think of it?
