The Dead Zone
Can Stephen King Work on TV?

There are some things that just don't seem to work on TV. For example, shows with an intelligent teenage protagonist. They get made, they have fans, they even last multiple seasons, but they never seem to break into the mainstream. Or shows about bands. It should work -- hot young people playing catchy tunes -- but ever since 'The Monkees', the formula has needed serious tweaking to take off. Another thing that doesn't seem to work on TV? Stephen King.
'Heroes' Director Boards Syfy's 'Haven'
Adam Kane, who directed episodes of 'Heroes' and 'The Mentalist,' is diving back into genre TV with Stephen King's 'Haven.' According to the Hollywood Reporter, the director has singed to helm the pilot for Syfy's upcoming supernatural series, based on King's novella, 'The Colorado Kid.'
The project, which centers on an FBI agent investigating a murder in a creepy town in Maine, has snagged Emily Rose, Lucas Bryant, Eric Balfour and Richard Donat for key roles. Rose, who chatted with us about the show last week, plays the agent who, she said, is also trying to solve a personal mystery that's "driven her whole life."
'Haven' has some strong ties to the 'The Dead Zone,' the last TV show adapted from King's work. Show producers Shawn Piller, Lloyd Segan and Scott Shepherd are all 'Dead Zone' vets who guided that series through six respectable seasons on USA. Time will tell if 'Haven,' which is also being pitched to networks abroad, will have a similar shelf life.
The series is set to premiere later this year.
'CSI: Miami' Books Anthony Michael Hall
Anthony Michael Hall will kill on an upcoming episode of 'CSI: Miami.' -- or at least that's what he'll be accused of.According to PEOPLE, 'The Dead Zone' star will make another primetime mark guesting as a suave former ER doc who has been convicted of murder.
No further details have been revealed about Hall's guest spot, although we do know that he'll begin taping tomorrow for an air date sometime in 2010.
A Dead Zone movie is possible
Looks like a Dead Zone movie is possible. Anthony Michael Hall, who starred in the USA network sci-fi show, told SCI-FI wire that he'd be interested in doing a Dead Zone movie. Hall, who played psychic Johnny Smith for the show's six-season run, reminds everyone that he's not optimistic a Dead Zone movie will be made. "I don't think we had the size of a cult following that, let's say, The X-Files did. You look at Sex and the City or The X-Files, these movies were done long after the shows pumped out their last episodes," says the actor. Also, The Dead Zone having a previous incarnation as a feature film might preclude any new attempts. (In the film, which was released in 1983, Christopher Walken starred as Johnny Smith.)Whatever the case may be with the possible movie, Anthony Michael Hall remains grateful about the opportunity to star in The Dead Zone. "I would certainly be open to the potential for [a reunion feature]. I would never turn my back on what [the show's late producer] Michael Piller did for me. He gave me this incredible opportunity. When I look back at [my] career, I view him and John Hughes as almost guardian angels of my career," Hall says.

The Brought to You by TV Squad Award: Winner - VIDEO

Product placement is everywhere, inescapable. According to Dr. Jean Kilbourne, author of Can't Buy My Love: How Advertising Changes the Way We Think and Feel, Americans are exposed to approximately 3000 advertisements every single day. Kilbourne has a compelling video called Killing Us Softly that reveals how insidious advertisements are. Ads tell us that women should be thinner, quieter, nicer, want to have cleaner houses. They tell us that men are boarish, lust after women while drinking cheap beers, and order endless rounds of pizza without ever developing a gut. Advertisements not only tell us what we should buy: They tell us how we should think and feel about things and who we should be.
Unfortunately, the price of our entertainment is advertisements. Even when you go to the movies these days, before you have seen any previews, you have seen six commercials for new phones from Verizon and Sprint; and you have paid handsomely for the privilege. This TV Squad Award is amusing, but it is also a testament to how ubiquitous ads are: They have now found their way into the very scripts of some of our very best shows. The only advantage shows like Lost and Battlestar Galactica have is that they mostly take place anachronistically, so advertising would stand out too ridiculously. However, sadly, other outstanding shows have succumbed. And one of the finest is TV Squad's choice to win this award.

The Dead Zone is dead
In the wake of reports that The 4400 had been axed, Ausiello over at TVGuide.com is reporting that The Dead Zone was struck a killing blow in that same swing. Two good shows gone just like that. And just before the holidays. Man, that's gotta suck. So it looks like just as Johnny Smith sees that he's still going to have to address that impending Armageddon, the series ends. I always thought the ratings were pretty good on these shows; were they starting to show their age? Losing viewers?
I hate it when a show is canceled between seasons like this, especially when they don't resolve everything in the Season/Series Finale. It leaves a bad taste in the mouths of viewers, and makes them more and more jaded to new shows. Why do you think the serialized drama glut of last season failed so miserably. Because everyone knew we'd never see the end of The Nine.
The Dead Zone: Ambush
(S06E12) We are finally coming around full circle to address Walt's death from the season premiere. Why we couldn't have been seeing bits of this as we went along, I don't know, but having a cohesive season of episodes in which one week continues logically into the next has never been a goal of The Dead Zone-- and that is fine. I just wish it would decide whether it wants to be a serial show or not, because it certainly is when it wants to be.What's On Tonight: Big Brother, Blue Planet, Dead Zone, Bobby Flay

The Dead Zone: Heritage (season premiere)
(S06E01) I love the name of this episode: Heritage. With the shocking death of Walt Bannerman (the always great Chris Bruno) (I didn't see it coming, but my 13 year old son says he did), we have not only Reverend Purdy's Heritage foundation (where Bannerman died), but also the heritage he leaves to Johnny, and his son J.J. One of the primary questions that has endured for five seasons can now be explored: If Walt were not there, would Johnny and Sarah get together? Are they fated to be together? (If the previews for next week are any indication, the answer would be, "Not just yet.")I worry because Greg Stillson has persistently pursued Sarah too. I am not convinced that she sees him for the villain that we (the audience) and Johnny know him to be. Though, Stillson did tell Johnny this episode that he isn't as bad as Johnny thinks he is...

Desperate Housewives: Listen to the Rain on the Roof (season premiere)
(S03E01) I think what has worked about Desperate Housewives for the past two seasons is its incredible camp. I have not been a regular watcher for the past two seasons, mostly because the time the show airs coincides with children's bedtimes at my house. But I had caught the occasional episode here and there, and I read enough entertainment magazines to have a knowledge of previous seasons' plot points. The Dead Zone: Into the Heart of Darkness
(S05E10) Okay. In the interest of full disclosure here, I will admit that I was an English major. And so maybe I am trying to find a narrative arc that just doesn't exist. I have struggled all season to find some kind of continuity in these episodes-- and I have so admit that maybe there just isn't any.TV Squad Hot Topics
