Cody's Extreme Exposure on 'The OCD Project' (VIDEO)

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jul 16th 2010 5:00AM
'The OCD Project' (Thurs., 10PM ET on VH1) follows the lives of six patients who are suffering from obsessive-compulsive disorder. Dr. David Tolin has brought all them together in a single house, where he attempts to cure their crippling illness. This week home-schooled Cody takes his exposure to the limit and he ends up being okay with it.

After being asked to "make yourself as uneven as you can get," Cody shaves parts of his head with clippers in front of the other patients. It's hard for him to do, but with encouragement from the others -- "that was pretty awesome Cody" -- he successfully completes the task.

Cody's OCD has held him back socially and with sports since he first started noticing symptoms in the third grade. When asked how he felt at the end of his head-shaving task, now looking disheveled and "uneven" in front of the others, he said, "No matter how bad things seem at the beginning, they do get better."

Pee and a Bed on 'The OCD Project'Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a difficult thing to treat. In order to make patients give up their greatest fears, you also have to confront them with their greatest fears. At least, that's the plan of Dr. David Tolin on 'The OCD Project' (Thu., 10PM ET on VH1).

[Spoiler alert.]

Patient Kristen Love has an irrational fear of germs and of contamination. So Dr. Tolin tries to deal with this fear by meeting it head on. And what's the method that he uses? He wants to have Kristen touch a glass of a glass of urine. This happens while Kristen is hanging out in her bedroom. Dr. Tolin's goal is to show her that germs aren't so bad.

Kristen instantly freaks out and starts crying. Meanwhile, Dr. Tolin protests that he's doing it all for her own good. Um, Doctor? We don't mean to be critical, but no one really wants to deal with a glass of pee while they are in their bedroom. Could you maybe find a different method of treatment?
