Can you smell what The Rock is cooking? It's a wrestling TV drama.

According to a report in Deadline, NBC has bought a pilot based on the professional wrestling boom of the 1980s, to be produced by former WWE star Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson.

For wrestling fans, the '80s were a golden era that gave rise to some of the sports most legendary stars, like Hulk Hogan, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Andre the Giant, and Bret "The Hitman" Heart.

The show will be written by Brent Fletcher, who has worked as a writer for NBC on the football drama 'Friday Night Lights,' and Seamus Kevin Fahey, writer of 'Spartacus: Gods of the Arena.' Jerry Bruckheimer will be one of the co-executive producers.

'Lopez' Reveals Old Footage of Dwayne 'Rocky' Johnson Wrestling (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Apr 21st 2011 4:34AM
Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, 'Lopez Tonight'You can't escape your past. Especially if that past was lived on television. Luckily, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was an incredibly good sport about his earlier ring incarnation as "Rocky". George Lopez had some footage of those early days on 'Lopez Tonight' (weeknights, 12AM ET on TBS).

"That's El DeBarge!" Lopez said after seeing the footage.

Johnson was so cool, though, that even embarrassing clip of him with a bad '90s hairstyle didn't phase him. (It helped that he was completely ripped in the footage.) We think "Stone Cold" Steve Austin might have been a lot more embarrassed of his "Stunning" days of wrestling than Johnson was of his "Rocky" era.

The Rock promoting WrestleMania 27, which airs Sun., 7PM ET on PPV.Finally, The Rock has come back to 'Wrestlemania'! Despite his box office success, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has never forgotten where he got his start - as a third generation pro wrestler. This Sunday he'll be hosting 'WrestleMania XXVII' (7PM ET, PPV), and he promised fans and press this week that he'd "layeth the smacketh down" at the event.

In a brief chat with The Rock this week at an NYC 'WrestleMania' press event, the wrestler-turned-actor shared his thoughts about his former colleague Chris Jericho doing 'Dancing With the Stars,' why athletes perform so well on that show and what would happen if The Most Electrifying Man in Sports Entertainment took the 'DWTS' stage. And we're pretty sure he admits to locking lips with Jericho at some point. Um, what?

She remains his manager to this day, and Johnson told 'Piers Morgan Tonight' (Weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN) about how he was able to go through a rough divorce and then come out with a great, loving relationship with his ex-wife.

"There's a period when we went through a lot of sludge," Johnson explained to Morgan. "I was very fortunate that I had her, who had the wherewithal to say 'Okay, we're going to go through this and it's terrible, but there's somewhere on the other side, if we come out of this, that we're going to become better'."

Dwayne Johnson Declined to Endorse 'The Shake Weight,' But Admits There's Something 'Inappropriately Interesting About the Motion' (VIDEO)

Dwayne Johnson Declined to Endorse 'The Shake Weight,' But Admits There's Something 'Inappropriately Interesting About the Motion'"The Rock" is like a rock when it comes to turning down endorsements. Dwayne Johnson can't be moved. He's already rejected a deal with Dunkin' Doughnuts -- they offered a ton of money just to name a doughnut after him. Johnson refused, even though he likes doughnuts. (That's impressive. We'd do it for free, just because it would be so cool to have your name on a doughnut.)

Obviously, to convince the Rock to shill for your product, you need to make a really compelling case. On 'The Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC), Jay Leno asked if anyone had made him a better offer.

Dwayne did mention one new endorsement opportunity. ... Apparently, the Shake Weight® company came knocking at the Rock's door. But he wasn't interested -- and he had a very solid reason for turning them down.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson Sings on 'Leno' (VIDEO)

Dwayne Johnson sings on The Tonight Show with Jay LenoIf there was any doubt that Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson is multi-talented, he proved that point on 'The Tonight Show With Jay Leno' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC).

The actor/wrestler crooned 'You Send Me' by Sam Cooke, accompanying himself on guitar, and he did a great job! We'll keep him in the competition for at least another week.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson made good on a losing bet with Regis Philbin on 'Live With Regis and Kelly' (weekdays, syndicated) by squeezing his massive frame into a frilly pink tutu.

"I want you to know that I'm a man of my word. But, I want you to know now, the bets between 'The Rock' and 'The Reeg' -- it's on. It is on. You enjoy the win my friend ... Regis, I'll see you soon, big boy," Johnson said with mock menace in a taped message.

Sundays with Seth: A horse is a horse, uness it's The Rock

by Jason Hughes, posted Jan 4th 2010 1:03PM
Dwayne
Between The Rock's bizarre guest appearance on Family Guy, and Stan's dirty deed on American Dad, it was a strange week in the twisted mind of Seth MacFarlane. But in a twist M. Night Shyamalan would be proud of, it was Family Guy's Meg Griffin who had the most memorable stand-out moment of the night. Uncomfortable, but memorable.

We also got the first episode of American Dad in the 16:9 widescreen ratio for the first time, and they didn't take advantage of the change to make any modification to the intro sequence at all, or spotlight it in any self-aware way. I still wish last week's epic could have been in widescreen, but with Family Guy now the only holdout on Animation Domination, the whole thing feels a little weird. Shouldn't the marquee show for Seth MacFarlane be in widescreen before its offspring?

Review: Saturday Night Live - Gerard Butler/Shakira

by Annie Wu, posted Oct 18th 2009 2:03PM
gerard butler and shakira
(S35E04) I remember sitting down and staring at Gerard Butler as he made funny, smarmy faces at the camera. And then I blinked, only to see Butler was thanking the cast and viewers for a wonderful show. I looked on the computer screen. There were half-remembered notes haphazardly tapped out at some point.

Somehow, I had jumped forward ninety minutes. Had I finally mastered short-term time travel? Or did I just watch an incredibly forgettable episode of Saturday Night Live? Probably the latter. However, I vaguely recall a destructive robot adorably struggling through a wall. If that was actually a dream and not real life, please don't tell me.

A star is born on Real Housewives of New Jersey (maybe)

I'm not a parent, but aren't all kids "always performing for people?" That's what Teresa says about her 7 year-old daughter Gia in this clip from Real Housewives of New Jersey. She takes the kid to audition for a role in a movie starring The Rock. I guess the road to stardom these days starts on reality shows.

Zac Efron as Jonny Quest? Really?

by Brad Trechak, posted Apr 15th 2009 5:19PM
Johnny QuestRecently I came across a blog post from the Los Angeles Times suggesting that 21 year-old teen heartthrob Zac Efron will be playing Jonny Quest, the 11 year-old kid adventurer of those old Hanna-Barbera cartoons. My first thought: would that work?

I think that casting would be confusing, but I also think that having Jonny spell his name without an "h" in it is confusing.

Of course, strange casting choices and Hollywood go hand-in-hand (Michael Keaton as Batman? Kevin Costner as Robin Hood?). In an industry that believes that a teenaged Matthew Perry would look exactly like Zac Efron, this shouldn't be a big stretch.

I'm a big fan of The Venture Brothers and their take on the whole Jonny Quest myth. This big screen version of the character would likely be a little less parody and a little more Indiana Jones. What a shame.

On the plus side, I think Dwayne Johnson is a perfect choice for the role of Race Bannon. Who would play Hadji, I wonder?

Saturday Night Live: Dwayne Johnson/Ray LaMontagne - VIDEOS

When I heard The Rock -- I mean, Dwayne Johnson -- was hosting again, the first image that popped into my mind was him in that Mr. Peepers sketch with Chris Kattan back in the day. I believe red overalls, apples, and aggressive humping was involved. Though Mr. Johnson traded in his red overalls for a sequined black halter top in this episode, he still did incredibly well. I had forgotten: Those aren't muscles; the guy has had charisma surgically inserted into his upper body over the past decade for easy access. Anyone else would have looked like an idiot trying to pull off The Rock Obama. Check out some video highlights and see what I mean.
