What to Watch: TV Picks for October 24 - 30

by Stephanie Earp, posted Oct 24th 2011 11:30AM
Allen Gregory - Sunday October 30, 8:30PM ET/PT, Global/Fox

Tonight marks the series premiere of a new animated series with the sweetest timeslot of the week. Voiced by Jonah Hill and French Stewart, it combines plot elements form 'Family Guy,' 'My Two Dads' and oddly, 'Frasier.' Hill plays Allen Gregory, a super-smart home-school kid who gets plopped into public school when the economy goes south. He's a hopeless snob, but I think we're supposed to like him because hey, we like Stewie Griffin. And the good news is, 'Bob's Burgers' isn't canceled, it's just resting and will return eventually.

Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford on the Emmys on 'Today'The 2011 Emmy Awards air Sunday, and Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb took a look at the field Friday on 'Today' (weekdays, 7AM on NBC) with People Magazine's style and beauty editor Pamela Edwards Christiani. They went through the major categories and picked a few favorites from 'Mad Men,' 'The Good Wife,' and 'The Office.'

Christiani picked Jon Hamm over Steve Buscemi, Kyle Chandler, Michael C. Hall, Hugh Laurie, and Timothy Olyphant for lead actor in a drama. "It's his year. I don't know if you paid attention to 'Mad Men' last season, his character was so intense. The downward spiral -- Don Draper brought it to us this year." She also likes Julianna Margulies for 'The Good Wife,' citing the show's critical acclaim and fan popularity.

Josh Charles Talks 'The Good Wife' Premiere, Gets 40th Birthday Love on 'The Talk' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Sep 14th 2011 6:15PM
Josh Charles of 'The Good Wife' on 'The Talk'When 'The Good Wife' left off last season, Julianna Margulies and Josh Charles were, after seasons worth of build-up, finally making out in an elevator. Charles said Wednesday on 'The Talk' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) that the new season will pick up just minutes after that scene, and get much steamier from there. He also celebrated his 40th birthday with the 'Talk' crew and audience.

"It does start off right afterwards," said Charles of 'The Good Wife' premiere. "It's just going to keep deepening all the characters." He also promised some surprises in the premiere episode. Like maybe nudity? "Maybe," he said.

Since Charles turns 40 on Thursday, 'The Talk' brought the Baltimore native a few gifts to remind him of home, including 40 cookies from Bergers Bakery and a football signed by some players on the Baltimore Ravens. The audience seemed to want a couple of cookies, too, and Charles gave one enthusiastic fan one of his cookies and a kiss on the cheek. It wasn't in an elevator, but she seemed pretty excited about it anyway.

Talking TV Podcast Talks 'Louie' and 10 Returning Shows We're Excited About

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 8th 2011 2:15PM
With the onslaught of new shows around the corner, Ryan McGee and I decided to talk briefly about 10 returning programs we're quite interested in (we each picked five shows).

And of course, the word "brief" was in our podcast planning documents, but it didn't quite work out that way. Between our opening gabfest about the FX show 'Louie,' which concludes its second season tonight, and the discussions of the other 10 shows, the podcast ended up being about 90 minutes long.

The rundown of shows we discussed, which includes 'The Good Wife,' 'Supernatural,' 'Boardwalk Empire,' 'Luther' and 'Glee,' is below.

Julianna Margulies: 'Good Wife' Premiere Sex Scene Too Hot for Hubby (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 2nd 2011 4:55AM
Julianna Margulies, 'Late Show with David Letterman'Julianna Margulies certainly got David Letterman's attention when she started talking about the season premiere of 'The Good Wife' on 'Late Show' (Weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS). It was her use of the word 'steamy' twice in describing one scene in particular.

"I'm inclined to believe you that it's steamy," he said. "I guess I don't know what steamy is. Nudity?"

"Semi-nudity," she said. "You can't do full frontal nudity."

But Letterman tried to get out of her just how much we were going to see, and all Margulies would confirm was a lot of thigh. She did say, though, that it's the first time she's been a little concerned about her husband watching her on television.

EXCLUSIVE: 'Good Wife' and 'Sons of Anarchy' Actor Cast in FX's 'Powers'

by Maureen Ryan, posted Jul 18th 2011 5:45PM
Titus Welliver is one of the busiest working actors around: He appeared in the final season of 'Lost' as the Man in Black, he has recurred on 'The Good Wife' as State's Attorney Glenn Childs and he played the Irish gun dealer Jimmy O on FX's 'Sons of Anarchy,' in addition to roles on 'Deadwood' and dozens of other hourlong dramas.

Now Welliver is returning to the FX fold for the pilot 'Powers,' which is currently shooting in Chicago. 'Powers,' which is based on a Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming comic book, stars Jason Patric and Lucy Punch as detectives who investigate crimes involving people with superhuman abilities.

Welliver has been cast as Triphammer in 'Powers,' and if the pilot gets picked up to series, his role will be recurring.

Four Ways to Make 'Parenthood' Even Better

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 22nd 2010 5:00PM

The news last week that NBC had renewed 'Parenthood' for a second season was not a big surprise. Yes, the show had a rocky start, considering that it was forced into a midseason premiere because producers had to recast actress Maura Tierney's role while she was battling breast cancer. But since then, it has been well-received and even bested its main competition Tuesdays at 10PM ET, 'The Good Wife,' a few times in the ratings. So there was every reason for NBC to give the Ron Howard/Brian Grazer production a second season. It earned it.

The show has actually been getting better. It's on its way to becoming a hit, and with just a few changes in the season to come, it could succeed. We've narrowed it down to four specifics, our suggestions for how 'Parenthood' could get even better than it is right now. Read our list and then weigh in with your thoughts.

What to Watch: April 5 - 11

by Stephanie Earp, posted Apr 5th 2010 12:40PM

Bones
- Wednesday April 7, 8 pm, Global/Fox

For the 100th episode of 'Bones', David Boreanaz directs a backward-looking episode that recalls the early days of the Booth-Brennan relationship and how romance almost got in the way of the work. I too remember the early days of 'Bones' - the expensive 3-D technology they used to reconstruct a body, seeing Angel in a suit, the awkward dialogue of the overly-techy techies. I admit, I didn't think the show would make it this far. But there's no doubt Emily Deschanel and Boreanaz have great chemistry and that the show has grown and improved since those early days. Is it the new 'Moonlighting'? Not exactly, but it still deserves kudos.

Carrie Preston Talks 'True Blood' Season 3 (Is Arlene Dead?!) and 'Good Wife'

by Kelly Woo, posted Apr 5th 2010 12:00PM
Carrie Preston'True Blood' star Carrie Preston doesn't have to go far to get scoop on one of her favorite shows, 'Lost.' All she has to do is turn over and ask Michael Emerson, who plays Ben Linus. Yes, these well-respected, fan-favorite actors on two of the most high-profile shows on television are married.

Now that's we call a Hollywood power couple.

But while Preston and Emerson may not be paparazzi targets like Brangelina, anything they say or do concerning their respective shows gets dissected and analyzed by fans on the Internet. Case in point: When it was announced that Preston would be guest starring on CBS' new hit legal drama 'The Good Wife,' fans of 'True Blood' instantly began to speculate whether this meant death for her character, waitress Arlene.

Hold your horses, though, she warned in an interview with AOL TV. "Let me put it this way, we've done half the season and I'm still there," she said. Preston spoke about the furor surrounding her 'Good Wife' guest stint, the upcoming third season of 'True Blood' and what she knows about the 'Lost' finale.
