Woman Wins Two Cars on 'The Price Is Right' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jul 28th 2011 3:00PM
Valencia will need at least one friend to drive home with after her big win on 'The Price Is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS). Maybe even two, if she drove to the studio herself. Valencia won two cars, plus a few other items, during her game in the first part of the show and then later, her Showcase Showdown.

Playing 'Money Game,' Valencia picked the right numbers and won a two-door sedan. Then in the Showcase Showdown, she bid $21,500 on a package with a laptop computer, a virtual assistant, and a four-door sedan. Her opponent Maureen bid $34,000 on a package with iPod Touches, a trip to New York City, a party boat, and $4,000 in spending cash.

'The Price Is Right' salutes the military'The Price Is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) saluted the military Thursday for the July 4 holiday weekend with a special episode. The audience was filled with service people, and the contestants were all from the military. Obviously, that included Joshua and Amber, the final two left standing in the Showcase Showdown.

Joshua's showcase was an off-road motorcycle, quad bike, a tailgater, and an SUV. Amber's was a trip on a private jet to Vegas, a Mustang convertible, and $2,500 in spending cash. Either would have been a nice haul, but both contestants underbid by a wide margin.

Contestants Have a Great Day at the Wheel on 'The Price Is Right' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 24th 2011 5:40PM
A great day at the wheel on 'The Price Is Right'Usually the big money on 'The Price Is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) is won in the Showcase Showdown at the end of the show. Friday, it was in the spin of the big wheel, where two contestants in a row hit the "$1.00" mark, winning a thousand dollars each. Both almost missed seeing the wheel's final click while saying hello to their families.

Each contestant earned a second spin, which is where things got really interesting. On her second spin, Bailey got 95 cents, which seemed impossible to beat, until Kimberly took her turn and hit one dollar for the second consecutive spin. All host Drew Carey could do was yell, "Watch out! Watch out!"

That gave Kimberly a nice cash boost of $25,000 before she even got to the Showcase Showdown. She eventually lost that, but still took home a good haul...before taxes, anyway.

A Day of Oversized Showcases on 'The Price Is Right' (VIDEO)

Tatia wins a big showcase on 'The Price Is Right'Often on 'The Price Is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS), there is a big showcase and a somewhat smaller showcase on the Showcase Showdown. Thursday, it was two big showcases, and neither contestant came within $9,000 of the actual values of their respective prize packages.

Tatia passed on a "Swimmer's Bliss" package, which included a swim spa, a trip to the Wisconsin Dells water park, and a sport boat. Drew made what seemed like a reasonable bid of $24,500. Tatia's package looked like the "big" one. It included four iPads, a Lincoln MKS SUV, trips to Zion National Park in Utah and Key West, Fla., and $3,000 in cash. Tatia bid $45,000.

In reality, the two showcases were roughly $3,000 apart. Drew's package was valued at $51,114, leaving him under by more than half of its value, which made host Drew Carey say "Wow." Tatia's package was valued at $54,413, leaving her $9,413, which wouldn't be good enough for the win most days. That brought Tatia to $57,412 in prizes for the day. As Carey said, "A good haul for one day's work. Not bad."

Contestant Drastically Underbids, Still Wins Big on 'Price Is Right' (VIDEO)

Edwin beats Donna on 'The Price Is Right'Edwin is going to need a lot of suntan lotion after Wednesday's 'Price Is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS). He won big in the Showcase Showdown, picking up a garden cabana and shower, trip to the Turks and Caicos Islands, and a sailboat in addition to the two Honda Rebel motorcycles he had won playing Double Prices earlier in the show.

He didn't win because of his mastery of price guessing, though. Edwin bid $25,000 on his showcase, which turned out to be worth $38,316. Usually, a bid $13,316 under the retail price won't do it for you on 'The Price Is Right,' but benefited from an overzealous opponent.

Donna bid $35,500 on an Apple computer, a trip to New York, and a car, a package valued at $32,804. Although she was a lot closer, she went over so she lost. Edwin wound up with $49,613 in prizes. Sorry, Donna; thems the rules.

Enthusiastic Contestant Kari Wins a Spa and Vacation on 'The Price Is Right' (VIDEO)

by Nick Zaino, posted Jun 21st 2011 5:55PM
Kari and Drew Carey on 'The Price Is Right'Kari really needed a car, but she came up a little short Tuesday on 'The Price Is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS). Kari nearly convulsed when her prize was unveiled and was hugging host Drew Carey and screaming, only 15 cents away from winning the car in Pocket Change, but came away a nickel short.

She'd soon make up for it, though, in the Showcase Showdown. Kimberly, her opponent, had a chance to win a surf board, an ATV and an SUV. Kari's showcase was a Whirlpool tub and vanity, spa vacations to Sedona and Switzerland, plus $3,000 cash.

Kimberly bid $28,000 on her showcase, and Kari bid $20,000 on hers. Kimberly's showcase was valued at $33,902, leaving her $5,902 under. Kari's was valued at $22,907, giving which put her just under $3,000, enough for the win and to make her scream directly into Carey's ear. Imagine if she'd won the car.

Engaged Couple Wins Honeymoon on 'The Price Is Right' (VIDEO)

Newlyweds win a honeymoon vacation on 'The Price Is Right'No matter who won the Showcase Showdown Monday on 'The Price Is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS), someone was going home with a bounty of wedding gifts. The show featured two sets of couples bidding on the Showdown for a "Wedding Showers" episode. Kevin and Aileen started off by passing up trips to Riviera Maya, South Africa, and a Mediterranean Cruise for Anthony and Christina to bid on.

Kevin and Aileen wound up bidding on a "Newlywed Starter Kit" that included a bedroom set, kitchen appliances, and a new Mini-Cooper. They bid $32,000 on the starter kit, while Anthony and Christina bid $25,324 on their vacation package.

Kevin and Aileen's showcase was worth $38,995, leaving them $6,995 behind. Anthony and Christina did only slightly better: their showcase was worth $31,986, a difference of $6,662, but they managed to beat their opponents by just over three hundred dollars. Happy honeymooning, kids.

Contestant Wins Elusive Double Showcase on 'The Price Is Right' (VIDEO)

Contestant wins double showcases on 'The Price Is Right'Gloria passed on her first chance to win an outdoor dining set, a spa, and a trip to Puerto Rico on Tuesday's 'Price Is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS). Instead, she chose a Showcase Showdown package including an Xbox with the WWE All-Stars game, an LCD HDTV, a trip to Summer Slam and a car. In the end, Gloria wound up with both packages.

It doesn't happen often, but if a contestant bids within $100 without going over, they win a "double showcase." Gloria's opponent Monica bid $13,000 on a showcase that wound up being valued at $34,801. "You missed it by that much," lamented host Drew Carey.

Gloria had much better luck. She bid $27,000 and her showcase was valued at $27,041, which means she'll be able to play her Xbox in her new spa. We're just hoping she doesn't drop the controller.

Five Creepy Game Show Hosts

by Danny Gallagher, posted Apr 22nd 2010 2:02PM
Fergie Olver, host of the game show Game show hosts by their very job description creep me down to the bone. It's just in their nature. They have to go out of their way to make ordinary people look comfortable, even though they have never been on television.

Some housewife from Minnesota who is one number away from owning a new Ford Focus is so nervous, she could fly into an eye-bleeding seizure at any moment. Enter the host. He has to step in and calm her down before that happens.

However, there is a fine line between comforting someone and invading their personal space with the force of a German infantry. These are the hosts who put that creepy feeling you get whenever you hear the phrase, "Come on down!"

Mimi Bobeck Takes Over 'The Price is Right' For April Fool's Day

by Joel Keller, posted Apr 1st 2010 5:31PM
Kathy Kinney and Drew Carey on the April Fool's Day Episode of 'The Price is Right'
It's tough to pull off an April Fool's Day prank and not look like a complete tool. Believe me, we've tried it more than once here at TV Squad. Either the joke is so subtle no one gets it, or it's so obvious and over the top that people start to think we've had our senses of humor surgically removed.

I wanted to give that caveat before I talk about what Drew Carey and the folks at 'The Price is Right' did to celebrate April Fool's Day today. If you didn't see it, Kathy Kinney made her second appearance on the show as her old 'Drew Carey Show' character Mimi Bobeck. This time, Mimi has been given the reins of the show by the folks at CBS, and she not only has made a few changes, but she's watching her arch-nemesis Drew's every move.

The gag worked in places. But the problem with carrying a gag like this through an hour-long game show is that you actually have to play the games in a straightforward manner. And that's where things broke down. Video of Drew's and Mimi's intro is after the jump.

Contestant Takes a Tumble on 'The Price Is Right' (VIDEO)

Contestant Falls Down on 'The Price Is Right'A contestant spinning the "Big Wheel " on 'The Price is Right' (weekdays, syndicated on CBS) put so much force into it that he lost his balance and slipped and fell to the floor. Ouch! It really gives the catch-phrase "Come on down!" a whole new meaning.

But the contestant jumped back up and, when he saw that his spin got one of the highest scores possible, a 95 out of 100, he was so excited that he did a somersault and then ran around the stage. Host Drew Carey had to call him back to the wheel. "I'm sorry," the contestant said. "No, don't be sorry," Carey responded.

The whole episode proves that there are many ways to win, and that taking a slight tumble isn't the worst thing in the world.

Is Game Show Hostdom Dead?

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 26th 2010 3:10PM
Game show hosts Drew Carey, Wayne Brady and Guy Fieri
Game shows used to flood the dial of my TV back in the 1980s and '90s. And that was when my TV could only pick up eight channels, three depending on the weather.

Back then, almost everything from daytime fare to the occasional prime time bit of airtime starred game show hosts. Their purpose on television was solely to wear smart suits, make sure their teeth reached the optimum level of whiteness and keep the game moving but entertaining.

Now that game shows are making a slow but steady return to television, it seems the traditional role of "host" has turned away from the traditional "game" emcee like Chuck Woolery, Wink Martindale, Bob Barker and Art Fleming and more towards lively hosting personalities from other walks of entertainment life like Drew Carey, Wayne Brady, Howie Mandel and Guy Fieri. Does this mean that the role of the traditional TV game show has gone to that great big "Curtain No. 2" in the sky?

The Ellen DeGeneres Show - The Price is Right FainterDid you catch 'The Price is Right' episode where the contestant fainted? OMG, it was wild! One minute, Drew Carey is galloping along with his Showcase spiel, and the next, he looks over and she's dropped to the floor.

Now the alleged fainter is denying that she actually fainted. Ok, well ... maybe. Watch the video below from 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show' (weekdays, syndicated) and tell us if you think she fainted or not. It certainly looks like a faint; on the other hand, she sprang right back up. Just to be on the safe side, Ellen gave her a backpack mattress. You know, just in case.
