With 'How to Be a Gentleman' already cancelled while female-lead comedies are coming out strong, are men in trouble this season? There were three "manly men" sitcoms in the pipes and one's down already. But 'Last Man Standing' (Tue., 8PM ET on ABC) has the star power of Tim Allen, who's fought this battle of manliness before.Allen brings every bit of Tim Taylor to Mike Baxter, which turns out to be exactly why it works. Who would have thought that the same schtick could work again two decades after 'Home Improvement' launched, but Allen's charm manages to carry the day.

Six Former TV Stars Who Should Forget Movies and Come Back to TV
by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 22nd 2010 2:00PM
The common wisdom used to be this: TV was the lesser of the screen arts, and even if you started as a television actor, you had to graduate to the big screen to be really successful .Common wisdom is sometimes wrong.
Personally I have never subscribed to the notion that film is a "step up" from television or "better" in some way -- as if you can't have quality and integrity on television. But today it is especially apparent that TV can have tremendous quality too, with shows like 'Mad Men' and 'Breaking Bad' rivaling the best in film.
So here's my list of six former TV stars who tried the movies -- with varied levels of success -- but should now come back home to TV. ... where they belong.

It's hard to imagine "Tim the Tool Man Taylor" and the star of 'The Santa Clause' in federal prison. But beginning in the late '70s, Tim Allen served 28 months in jail for narcotics possession. He spoke about the experience on 'Lopez Tonight' (weeknights, 11PM ET on TBS). George Lopez said, "[Prisoners] wear the same thing [every day]."
"That's one of the things I liked about being inside -- dress," said Allen. "I would wear the same crap every day if I could get away with it. Women don't get that. My wife ... it's like insane to her. She changes clothes from the bedroom to the garage."
An Open Letter to TV Land About the TV Land Awards
by Bob Sassone, posted Apr 15th 2010 11:19AM
Dear TV Land,I'm very excited about the 'TV Land Awards' that will air on April 25 at 9PM. I'm a big fan of retro television (and Retro Television), and I like seeing a lot of stars both old and new get all dressed up and come together for a night of fun, craziness, and award-giving. Tim Allen as host? Great! You're going to honor Tom Hanks and Peter Scolari from 'Bosom Buddies?' Fantastic! A salute to 'Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks?' Outstanding!
I'm particularly excited about this year's show because from the promos I've seen, it looks like you're going to re-animate the dead.

Regis Sets Jan. 4 Return Date
by Daniel Frankel, posted Dec 31st 2009 11:58AM
A morning show crisis has officially been averted.Regis Philbin will return to his seat as co-host of 'Live! With Regis and Kelly' on Jan. 4, series distributor Disney-ABC Domestic Television announced Wednesday.
Philbin set off a minor panic in late November when he told his viewing audience that he was going in for hip surgery and would be back sometime "next year." The ambiguity of that timeline led some to speculate that the 78-year-old Philbin might have something more wrong with him than hip trouble.
