TCA Awards Nominate 'Justified,' 'Game of Thrones,' 'Parks and Recreation' and 'Community'

by Maureen Ryan, posted Jun 13th 2011 4:35PM
Critics tend to rave about dramas like 'Boardwalk Empire,' 'Game of Thrones,' 'The Good Wife,' 'Mad Men' and 'Justified,' so it was no surprise to learn that all those awards picked up multiple nominations from the Television Critics Association, which announced its TCA Awards nominees Monday.

The Television Critics Association is an organization of more than 200 television critics and journalists, and this year, the group made some pretty unimpeachable choices.

On the comedy side, 'Parks and Recreation,' 'Louie,' 'Modern Family' and 'Community' picked up multiple nominations.

'Top Chef All-Stars' Winner Richard Blais and Runner-Up Mike Isabella Speak

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 1st 2011 11:30AM
top_chef_all-stars_bravo_2011_richard_blais_mike_isabellaIt was one of a the closest contests ever in 'Top Chef' history, as Wednesday's finale came down to two remarkable, four-course dinners composed by the remaining two 'Top Chef All-Stars' cheftestants.

It was like a prize fight, with both heavyweight chefs Richard Blais and Michael Isabella slugging it out course by course, dish by dish, morsel by morsel.

The judges, including guest chefs like Hubert Keller and Art Smith, were duly impressed by the food presented by these two finalists. Head judge Tom Colicchio declared that it had been the best cooking he'd ever eaten in a 'Top Chef' finale.

Ultimately, the choice of one over the other was a case of splitting hairs, with Blais emerging victorious. Read on for interviews with both Blais and Isabella.

It came down to two -- Richard Blais and Michael Isabella. Who would take the title of Top Chef in the finale of 'Top Chef All-Stars'? That was the question.

As Tom Colicchio said during the show, this title wasn't just about cooking. The word "chef" means "boss." Who would be the best boss in the kitchen when there was $200,000 and the elusive title on the line?

Antonia Lofaso on 'Top Chef All-Stars' Elimination: 'I Was Out of My Comfort Zone'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 25th 2011 4:00PM
top_chef_all-stars_logo_bravoWith just three chefs left on 'Top Chef All-Stars,' it was inevitable that the contest would tighten up. The penultimate episode, called 'The Last Supper,' was exactly that. A nip and tuck fight to the finish with more than a few twists thrown in to complicate the battle.

Richard, Antonia and Mike gave it there all and looked as stressed out as prisoners facing their last supper ... only in this case, they had to cook it themselves! When all was said and done and grilled and sauteed, the chef who was sent packing had little to apologize for. In fact, it could have just as easily been the other chef. The choice was that narrow.

['Top Chef All-Stars' - 'Last Supper']

'Top Chef All-Stars' was down to just three contestants, Antonia, Mike and Richard. You'd like to think that this was a very positive experience for all three of them, but instead it was more like "who's going to choke?"

Well, nobody choked in this episode, but I wasn't happy with the results. I may not have tasted the food, so I can only go by my impressions, and to me the wrong chef was sent packing.

All three chefs seemed uptight at the start. Mike had been riding high, winning a lot of challenges, and brimming with confidence. The guy is cocky as hell anyway, so I didn't buy that he was worried.

Two female chefs, two male chefs. They made up the final four as the penultimate episode of 'Top Chef All-Stars' commenced. This would not be the time to serve up a bad dish or to make a technical mistake, like last week when Carla inexplicably deep fried a pork loin.

The four seemed to know that they had to be on their toes. The Quick Fire Challenge was a test of consistency and precision. The chefs split into two teams, and naturally the boys stuck together. Can they be more predictable?

The fellas just have this superiority complex that clearly is a food industry thing. Male chefs think they're the best, and Mike and Richard uphold that stereotype.

'Top Chef All-Stars' Eliminated Chef: 'I Lost My Focus At The End'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 11th 2011 10:00AM
top_chef_all-stars_bravo_2011It was just one of those nights for the contestants of 'Top Chef All-Stars.' The circumstances conspired to make it one of the most challenging Elimination Challenges ever ... and that was without the machinations of the producers to make it so. It was fate. Fate in the form of a kitchen fire.

The sudden, shocking turn of events meant that all five chefs remaining -- the final five -- had a chance to reassess and contemplate their plans.

Unfortunately, the chef that was sent packing succumbed in the heat of the moment. It wasn't the first time it had happened to this chef, but that was hardly a comfort.

So, five chefs remain. The final five ... it was supposed to be four, but the judges enjoyed the food last week so much, they couldn't eliminate a chef. So here we are in the Bahamas with the five remaining contestants.

Welcome to the 'Top Chef All-Stars' run-up to the finale. Tonight's episode turned out to be quite a wild ride, including flinty burners, blaring sirens and smoke filled rooms.

'Top Chef All-Stars' Eliminated Chef: 'Time Caught Up With Me'

by Allison Waldman, posted Feb 25th 2011 3:00PM
top_chef_logo_bravoIf there's one thing to learn from this season of 'Top Chef,' even when the creme de la creme are competing, it still only takes one bad dish to send you home. That was the bitter pill swallowed by one chef last night.

The chef in question had been riding high. In fact, another contestant -- someone who'd already been axed but was back as a sous chef -- actually whispered to him/her on camera that he/she would be the ultimate winner.

Maybe that influenced what happened, because last night's eliminated chef just fell apart in the final challenge. In the spotlight, rather than rise to the occasion, the chef stumbled. And that was all it took to end the chef's chances for the ultimate prize.

Many viewers were shocked by Angelo's exit last week ... and so were the six remaining chefs. Dale accepted the fact that everyone had to go home at some point, outside of the 'Top Chef All-Star' champion.

Still, suffice to say, the cheftestants were pretty rattled that someone as accomplished as Angelo Sosa was sent packing based on one bad dish. By the end of the episode, there'd be another shocking exit.
