New TV on DVD for April 13: 'Dallas,' 'Emergency!' and More

by Scott Harris, posted Apr 13th 2010 3:00PM
If you're a fan of classic television, then you're in luck this week, as some of the biggest hits of the 1970's are the subjects of new DVD releases this week. And at the top of that list is one of the greatest prime time hits of all time: 'Dallas.'

Of course, by the time 'Dallas: The Complete Thirteenth Season' finished up, it was actually the 1990's and we had already learned who shot J.R. and that whole "shower sequence dream vision" thingy was well in the rear view mirror, but no matter what date is listed in the credits, as long as it says 'Dallas' on the box, you know this set is worth it's weight in Texas Tea.

Also coming out of the classic 70's vault this week: 'Emergency!: Season Six.' For those of you too young to remember this series, 'Emergency!' was a lot like the recently canceled NBC show 'Trauma,' except popular. Strange but true.

New TV on DVD Releases This Week

Jim Henson's Earth StoriesAdmittedly, this week is a bit of a slow one in terms of television DVD releases. The penultimate season of 'Dallas' is being released (although there are still some reunions and mini-series to go after that). There is also some Jim Henson works (the man was a fountain of creativity before his untimely death), some Tom and Jerry and some Donna Reed. For those who are fans of obscure, short-lived television, both 'Haunted' and 'The Oregon Trail' are releasing their complete series.
  • 'Alias Smith and Jones' - Seasons 2 & 3
  • 'Dallas' - The Complete 13th Season
  • 'The Donna Reed Show' - Family Favorites
  • 'Emergency!' - Season 6
  • 'Haunted' - Complete Series
  • 'The Jim Henson Hour' - Song of the Cloud Forest & Other Earth Stories
  • 'Jim Henson's Animal Show' - With Stinky & Jake: Lions, Tigers and Bears
  • 'The Oregon Trail' - The Complete Series
  • 'Tom and Jerry Tales' - Season 1

Battlestar GalacticaThe 2005 'Battlestar Galactica' series has been repackaged on both DVD and Blu-ray to fit more cleanly on your shelf, but doesn't include the cool Cylon action figure. Universal Home Video is also releasing the individual seasons on Blu-ray and this week is releasing season number two of the four. For those that aren't such big fans of sci-fi space opera, the second season of 'Ally McBeal' has also been released.
  • 'Ally McBeal' - The Complete 2nd Season
  • 'Battlestar Galactica' - Season 2 and the Complete Series on both DVD and Blu-ray (repackaged)
  • 'Blood Ties' - The Complete Series on DVD and Blu-ray

New TV on DVD for March 23: 'Mad Men,' '7th Heaven' and More

by Scott Harris, posted Mar 23rd 2010 3:15PM
In 'Julius Caesar,' Shakespeare famously wrote, "beware the Ides of March," leading generations of students to wonder: just what the heck is an "Ide"? Technically, it's the 15th day of the month, while metaphorically it's a sign of impending doom. But for those of you wondering what a real Ide of March is, look no further than this week's random and lackluster assortment of DVD releases. Because when one of the top releases of the week is 'Krod Mandoon,' well, be very wary indeed.

Not that there aren't some bright spots in these dog days of spring. 'Mad Men,' for instance, has capitalized on the weak crop by releasing 'Mad Men: Season 3,' ensuring that the acclaimed series will get even more attention than it might otherwise have during a more crowded week. Not that we'd expect anything less form the savvy folks at Sterling Cooper.

Also on the plus side of the lameness ledger is old favorite '7th Heaven,' which turns up just when you need it like a threadbare-but-comfy sweater. The latest batch of adventures featuring the Camden clan is '7th Heaven: The Complete Tenth Season.' Ten seasons! Eat that, 'Eight is Enough.'

New TV on DVD for Mar. 2: 'Alice,' 'Designing Women' & More

by Scott Harris, posted Mar 2nd 2010 2:00PM
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and if that's the case, Tim Burton and the folks behind 'Alice in Wonderland' are about to be buried under an avalanche of flattery. Whether you think it's a cheap marketing ploy or a very, very smart marketing ploy, the release of top-line films such as 'Alice' usually coincide with other studios rolling out all the similarly themed product they can in order to ride coattails to success at the cash register. And while most of those releases come in the form of old adaptations and quickie knockoff films, there's a little something for everyone this week in the DVD market, even TV fans.

Case in point: SyFy Channel's 2009 miniseries 'Alice.' No, it wasn't conceived by the network as a way to get rich off of Johnny Depp's wacky hairstyle, but there's no question that the studio wisely decided to capitalize on the hype by picking this week to release the 'Alice' DVD set.

New TV DVDs for Feb. 23: 'Jersey Shore,' 'Project Runway' and More

by Scott Harris, posted Feb 23rd 2010 10:00AM
Whether due to the Olympics or simply the doldrums of winter, there's no doubt that the last few weeks of TV DVD releases have been painfully slow -- the less said about last week's 'Small Wonder' set, for instance, the better. But this week, things are finally turning around. And the mega hit that has arrived to lead us to the promised land? Why, it's 'Jersey Shore,' of course.

Okay, so maybe 'Jersey Shore' isn't everyone's idea of high culture, but let's face it: When you're curling up on your couch under a Snuglee with a bag of Smartfood clutched in one hand and half a six pack of Diet Pepsi in the other, you're probably not looking for a Ken Burns documentary. And have no fear: The tanning, gym and laundry of 'Jersey Shore: Season 1 Uncensored' are about as far away from PBS as you can get.

New TV DVDs for Jan. 19: 'Weeds,' 'Damages' and More

by Scott Harris, posted Jan 19th 2010 11:00AM
Welcome to our special post-Golden Globes edition of New TV DVDs. Though, to be honest, there isn't a lot of connection between the two. While the film industry has wisely capitalized on the Oscars as a marketing tool, the television industry hasn't yet managed to fully harness such events to bolster their own sales. Thus, though 'Glee,' 'Mad Men' and 'Dexter' all had big nights on Sunday, none of them are represented on this week's list of DVD releases.

Still, the shows that are arriving in stores this week do include no fewer than 45 Golden Globe nominations between them, which is nothing to sneeze at unless you happen to be allergic to good television. Yet, we'll bet that you can't guess which of them had the most nominations. Here's a hint: the series is not mentioned in our headline. Give up yet?

New TV DVDs for Jan. 12: 'The Simpsons,' 'ER' and More

by Scott Harris, posted Jan 12th 2010 8:30AM
If you're like us, you're probably still digging yourself out form the pile of random junk your family got you for Christmas or Hanukkah. And while the fact that you don't own a pet shouldn't keep you from enjoying the doggie sweater your aunt bought for you, we've come up with a pretty good work around for this particular problem: return it all and buy some sweet DVDs with the store credit instead.

And the first thing you might want to purchase is 'The Simpsons: The Complete Twentieth Season.' Cleverly released to coincide with Fox's big 20th anniversary celebration this week, this set will give you all 'The Simpsons' you need to tide you over until season 21 arrives.

New TV DVDs for Jan. 5: 'Chuck,' 'Big Love' and More.

by Scott Harris, posted Jan 5th 2010 5:30PM
January is here, and in the world of television that means the return of all those popular shows that went on hiatus so the networks could bring you 5800 college football bowl games instead. But if your favorite series still isn't back yet (we have to wait another month for 'Lost?!'), you can always turn to your DVD player to find respite from the winter doldrums.

And what says entertainment more than multiple wives? According to HBO's 'Big Love,' well, not a whole lot; you can get yourself caught up on all the man-on-woman-on-woman-on-woman action with the release of 'Big Love: The Complete Third Season.' And by action, we mean messy marital disputes.

Thirtysomething season two hits DVD in January

by Mike Moody, posted Oct 30th 2009 4:04PM
thirtysomething season two dvdI know I'm dating myself, but I'm really looking forward to watching the second season of thirtsysomething on DVD.

The first season was released back in August, and I had a blast catching up with great characters like Michael and Melissa Steadman, Elliot Weston and Gary Shepherd. Season two hits DVD in January, thanks to the good folks at Shout! Factory, known for putting out great sets like the packed Freaks and Geeks collection and the recent Transformers "G1" collector's set.

Some people might only think of thirtysomething as "that '80s show about whiny yuppies," and that's fine. But the Emmy-award winning drama brings back a lot of great memories for me. As I mentioned before, I used to watch it with my mom, who I'm pretty sure related to Patricia Wettig's frustrated homemaker Nancy Weston and free spirit Melissa Steadman, played by Melanie Mayron. (As for my dad, I'm not ashamed to say that he's more of a Timothy Busfield type!)

DVD cover art and release date for Andy Barker, P.I.

by Mike Moody, posted Aug 30th 2009 2:10PM
shout factory, dvd, andy barker p.i.I love Andy Richter, but he seems awfully stiff every time I watch him on The Tonight Show. I prefer to remember the guy from his early days on Late Night, his short-lived show Andy Richter Controls the Universe, and his other short-lived show, the hilarious Andy Barker, P.I.

Like Danny reported back in May, Andy Barker, P.I. is finally coming to DVD. Shout! Factory will release the entire series on Nov. 17. The two-disc set will include all six episodes, some with commentary by Richter and producer Conan O'Brien, plus a retrospective feature and a doc about the show's amazing writers, including Jonathan Groff (How I Met Your Mother), Josh Bycel (Psych), and Jane Espenson (Buffy, BSG). Click through for a better look at the DVD cover art.
