'United States of Tara' Season 3, Episode 12 (Series Finale) Recap

It's the end of an era -- or at least the end of an excellent, and sadly underwatched, show, one that took more risks and offered more insight into the human psyche than most series could even dream of.

And though 'United States of Tara' suffered an unexpected cancellation after filming for Season 3 was completed, I still found myself satisfied by the way the loose ends were tied up, even though I would've gladly seen the show continue for many years to come if the TV gods answered to me instead of eroding ratings.

'United States of Tara' Season 3, Episode 11 Recap

by Laura Prudom, posted Jun 14th 2011 4:45AM
John Corbett and Toni Collette['United States of Tara' - 'Crunchy Ice']

I hate to say it, but the penultimate episode of 'United States of Tara' felt a little bipolar to me, no pun intended.

The season was completed long before the show's cancellation was announced, but the episode still had a frantic, breathless quality that made me feel like the writers were rushing to tie up loose ends but hadn't left themselves enough time to do it, as if they needed 13 episodes instead of 12 to get themselves to the finish line.

Perhaps it's because I had the benefit of receiving screeners of the whole season at once, and I blew through them as rapidly as Bryce picked off Tara's other alters, unable to quite help myself.

When watching episodes back to back, seeing Marshall dramatically leaving home for parts unknown at the end of one episode and then winding up right back under the same roof ten minutes later at the beginning of the next felt a little anticlimactic. Watching the Bryce storyline build up to its climax, on the other hand, was anything but.

Tara Finds a New Therapist on 'United States of Tara' (VIDEO)

by Chris Harnick, posted Apr 20th 2010 10:40AM
United States of TaraLast week on 'United States of Tara' (Mon., 10:30PM on SHO), Max told Tara she needed to find a new therapist and that's what Tara did. However, there's a problem. This week we learned the therapist is a new alter, Shoshana.

Thing haven't been easy for Max this season, what with Buck having an affair with a bartender, so when he meets Shoshana, he's not too pleased.

"OK, who are you?" Max asked Shoshana. "I'm Shoshana Schoenbaum, Tara's new therapist," Tara -- um -- Shoshana said.

Tara seems to be making progress with her new therapist, but there's no telling how long that will last.

'United States of Tara' - 'Doin' Time' Recap

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 20th 2010 12:44AM
(S02E05) There's something very comforting about the massive dysfunction among Tara and her family, especially since they have such a way of not letting the craziness really get to them. It's almost as if Tara's condition has prepared those around her to accept whatever slings and arrows get tossed their way. More on the latest patient of Dr. Shoshona Schoenbaum and Neil's hairy back patch after the jump.

United States of TaraOn 'United States of Tara' (Mon., 10:30PM on SHO), Marshall's sexuality has always been sort of an unspoken truth. However, last night, the words were spoken.

Last week, the confused Marshall started fooling around with a female classmate, but this week he finally accepted the truth. When Max, his dad, asked him how things were going with Courtney, Marshall struggled with his words before he finally blurted out: "I'm gay." Max's response? "Good."

'United States of Tara' - 'You Becoming You' Recap

by Allison Waldman, posted Apr 13th 2010 1:02AM
Wow, just when you think you've seen it all from Tara, something happens and you're left with your jaw dropping to the floor. Creator Diablo Cody has clearly decided that Tara's psyche is not just split, it's a frigging kaleidoscope.

Last season, there was the animal creation that came out of nowhere, and in this episode, yet another variation on the theme. However, if you saw this one coming, you're better than me, 'cause I was stunned. And surprisingly excited, too. For more on Tara, Max, Marshall and Princess Valhalla, keep reading after the jump.

Max Discovers Tara's Secret Girlfriend on 'United States of Tara' (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Apr 6th 2010 5:13AM
Joey Lauren Adams on 'United States of Tara'On last night's 'United States of Tara' (Mon., 11PM ET on SHO), Tara's husband Max (John Corbett) found out -- in public -- that his wife (Toni Collette) is cheating on him. To be clear, it's one of Tara's split personalities, but still.

Tara tried to explain to girlfriend Pammy (Joey Lauren Adams) that it's her "fake personality" Buck who's been pursuing her. She doesn't care, going so far as to announce her love to Tara -- and husband Max and fellow ice-skating patrons.

"Buck, I love you, I love you for who you really are. Buck, Tara -- all of you!" Max is, suffice to say, pissed.

'United States of Tara' - 'The Truth Hurts' Recap

Sex was the topic of the day in and around the 'United States of Tara,' with nearly everyone questioning, experimenting, wondering and musing about the subject. Gay, straight, bi and variations on a theme. There was something about dogs in a bathtub that's still beyond me. There's nothing united about Tara's states right now. After all the time away in therapy and the realization that her shattered persona was not the result of what happened at school when she was a teenager, the reality emerging is that something is askew in her psyche that cannot be fixed... The lid on the pot is shaking and ready to explode. More on that and Marshall's gay-size shorts after the jump.

Toni Collette on 'United States of Tara'Talk about a lack of self-awareness on 'United States of Tara' (Mon., 10:30PM ET on SHO). Thanks to Tara's (Toni Collette) multiple personality disorder, she sleeps with a woman (Joey Lauren Adams) and later has no recollection of it.

Showtime Renews 'Jackie' and 'Tara' for Third Seasons

by Audrey Fine, posted Mar 26th 2010 10:45AM
Nurse JackieWith their second seasons just off the starting blocks, Showtime has already ordered a third for both 'Nurse Jackie' and 'United States of Tara,' according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Monday-night's season opener snagged 'Jackie' it's highest numbers to date (1.5 million over two airings) and 'Tara' was on par with its first season debut.

Her bang-on portrayal of a jaded E.R. nurse whose unmanageable back pain leads her to abuse pain pills (and the man who dispenses them) earned star Edie Falco her seventh Golden Globe nomination (she won two for 'The Sopranos'). 'Tara' lead Toni Collette, meanwhile, nabbed both the Globe and an Emmy statues at last year's ceremonies.

This week, I also dive a little deeper into two other must-watch shows with scoop on new alters for 'United States of Tara''s second season, straight from star Toni Collette, and a celebrity spewing about why she loves 'Lost' almost as much as I do.

Showtime Picks Up Third Seasons of 'Jackie' and 'Tara'

by Allison Waldman, posted Mar 25th 2010 6:40PM
showtime_logo_redIt doesn't take a rocket scientist to recognize that Showtime is the home of two of the best comedies currently on the air, 'Nurse Jackie' and 'United States of Tara.' Having been fortunate enough to enjoy the season two premieres of these two shows last Sunday, it came as no surprise that Showtime announced today that both 'Jackie' and 'Tara' are coming back for a third season.

Actually, it is a bit of a surprise ... that it happened so fast! Showtime could have saved the news for a few weeks or even the end of these second seasons. But you have to figure the premium cable channel is pretty happy with the ratings these shows have generated and the enthusiasm is palpable. Another season, twelve more episodes of each, and for the creators of these shows that just has to be a great validation.
