Beyonce, VMAs, Video Music Awards
This year's Video Music Awards saw Lady Gaga in drag, a tribute to Britney Spears, a surprise performance of 'Otis' by BFFs Jay-Z and Kanye West, and an epic performance of 'Love on Top' complete with pregnancy announcement by Beyonce -- and more than 12 million people tuned in to watch.

The 2011 VMAs were the highest-rated ceremony for the network ever, according to Deadline. In MTV's target 12-34 demographic, the telecast earned a 10.8 rating with 8.5 million people watching. Overall viewership increased 9 percent from last year's show, making the 2011 VMAs the most-watched non-sports cable show of the year.

Deena Cortese of 'Jersey Shore' on 'Good Day LA'Deena Cortese said Sunday night's MTV Video Music Awards ceremony was "the best night of my life" on 'Good Day LA' (weekdays, 9AM PT on Fox). She got to meet a lot of celebrities, and found they were fans of hers, and 'Jersey Shore.'

Deena was most thrilled with meeting Lady Gaga, which almost made her cry. "Never in my life I thought that Neo, Beyonce, like, Lady Gaga, Pippa," she said, "like, they would come up and like say they watch us. Seth, like, Rogen, like, Jonah Hill's like, it was insane, and I was just like Jersey Turnpiking Seth Rogen. Like, it was amazing."

Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, Beyonce and Cloris Leachman Highlight the 2011 VMAs (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 29th 2011 3:21AM
Britney Spears & Lady Gaga, '2011 MTV Video Music Awards'As always, the 'MTV Video Music Awards' (Sun., 9PM ET on MTV) was a spectacle of sight and sound, filled with the hottest faces and voices in popular music. Jay-Z and Kany West lit up the stage with a duet, while Mrs. Jay-Z, Beyonce, performed and revealed that the couple was expecting.

Lady Gaga presented yet another crazy costume, only this time the craziest thing about it was that she was portraying a man -- her own lover, no less. She stayed in character to present Britney Spears with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, where the pair almost kissed, but Spears said, "I've done that already."

Beyoncé Reveals Pregnancy at '2011 MTV Video Music Awards' (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Aug 29th 2011 12:22AM
Beyonce pregnant, '2011 MTV Music Awards'Beyoncé and Jay-Z didn't come alone to the '2011 MTV Video Music Awards' (Sun., 9PM ET on MTV). Those who tuned into the red carpet special saw the multi-platinum singer revealing a baby bump in her gown, but for those in the audience, or who only tuned in when the actual show began, she certainly had a surprise in store for them.

On stage, she wore a loose fitting jacket for her performance of 'Love on Top,' but invited the audience to "feel the love that's growing inside of me." Then, without any additional words, at the end of the song, she unbuttoned the jacket to reveal what's growing inside of her to the whole world.

MTV VMAs Craziest Red Carpet Fashions

by AOL Music Staff, posted Aug 28th 2011 4:45PM
Lady Gaga at the MTV VMAsOver the years, the MTV Video Music Awards have earned the reputation of being the one and only major awards show where it's not only OK, but actually encouraged, to really let your freak flag fly.

As we patiently wait to see how the stars will try to outdo one another with their outrageous red carpet fashions at this year's big event (Sun., Aug. 28, 9PM ET on MTV), we're taking a look back at VMA red carpet history and all its horrors.

From the nearly nude numbers, to the catastrophic costumes and the most foul fashion faux pas, we've pulled the craziest looks from past VMA red carpets and compiled them into one, glamor-gone-oh-so-wrong photo gallery.

There's Lil' Kim's purple pasty and Hammer pants taken to the extreme, Christina Aguilera looking all 'Dirrty' and Britney Spears in head-to-toe leather. It's possibly the most "wow" fashion photo gallery we've ever seen.

Kate Walsh Follows Lady Gaga's Meat Dress with a Sushi Dress (VIDEO)

by Aimee Deeken, posted Sep 17th 2010 5:30AM
Kate Walsh Wears Sushi Dress on 'Tonight Show'As an homage to Lady Gaga's meat dress from the VMAs, Kate Walsh appeared in a sushi and sashimi dress on 'The Tonight Show' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on NBC). She accessorized with fish meat on her sunglasses, a tuna sushi-roll ring and prawns draped over her heels.

Walsh said she was on a plane during the MTV Video Music Awards. But a Twitter fan helpfully sent her an image of Lady Gaga's dress. "The first thought that I had was like, 'A nice plate of prosciutto with melon,' thinking that's kind of witty," said Walsh. But it "opened up a whole can of whoop-ass" from the performer's Little Monsters disciples.

For the record, the actress is "a huge fan of Lady Gaga." And Jay Leno was a huge fan of the dress. "This is the first time I thought I would really enjoy having sushi," he joked.

Chelsea Handler as VMA Host: How'd She Do? (POLL)

by Jean Bentley, posted Sep 13th 2010 3:00PM
Chelsea HandlerAside from Lady Gaga's meat dress and that whole Taylor Swift/Kanye West beef, the most talked-about story from last night's MTV Video Music Awards was the collective thumbs-down critics gave to VMA host Chelsea Handler.

Our own Rebecca Ann Warren thought "most of [Handler's] skits fell flat: She jumped in the hot tub with the 'Jersey Shore' cast (heels and all) and exited with a tired joke in the form of a faux baby bump. She addressed last year's West-Swift debacle by warning off stage crashers with a stupid self-defense demonstration. She filmed a running skit with Ke$ha about a VMA meet and greet. And she made an unfortunate joke about riding home on the face of the hot werewolf from 'True Blood."

MTV VMAs 2010: Kanye West's New Song, Lady Gaga's Outfits and More

by Rebecca Adler Warren, posted Sep 13th 2010 1:00AM
Chelsea HandlerOnce a year, MTV puts its reality shows on pause to play music videos. And so the music industry elite (plus Ke$ha) gathered at the 2010 Video Music Awards to sing, dance and don ridiculous-looking fashions.

Chelsea Handler, MTV's first female VMA host in 16 years (seriously, MTV?) started the night out with some advice from D.A.R.E's newest spokesperson, Lindsay Lohan. The jailbird looked haggard and hardened by the clink, but at least Larry Rudolph is already at work rehabbing her career.

Lady Gaga then took the stage with a single-family home on her head and a dove tucked in her crotch. This could've been authentic Gaga until Handler peeked out of the home's garage to start her opening monologue, which riffed on The Situation and Justin Bieber, and practically begged the audience and performers to act out, cause a ruckus and be very, very bad.

MTV Video Music Awards' It-Girl: How Does Chelsea Handler Stack Up?

by Anna Dimond, posted Sep 5th 2010 4:30PM
Between performances by chart-topping pop artists and obligatory reaction shots of famous people in the audience, MTV's Video Music Awards might not seem like it's taking any risks when it airs live on Sept. 12 (9PM ET).

The music won't be making a radical shift: Billboard staples like Kanye West, Eminem and Justin Bieber are all slated to rap, sweat and make teenage girls swoon. The location won't be exceptional, either: The show traditionally opts for venues in either New York or Los Angeles, with this year landing again back in the City of Angels. And the presenters, per the usual, will include a range of well-known stars, such as Ne-Yo and Ashley Greene, alongside some promo-savvy up-and-comers, like Ke$ia and Nicki Minaj.

Instead, the chance for something fresh in this year's awards rests on the shoulders of a blond woman named Chelsea Handler, whom MTV announced last week will host the proceedings.

By all accounts, including MTV's, Handler was an unusual choice to take the reins of the network's 27th annual ode to all things young and corporate-sanctioned music.

Chelsea Handler is Single, 35 & Would Like to Date Black Dudes (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Sep 3rd 2010 1:15AM
Chelsea Handler Is Single at 35 - and Is Thinking About Dating Black GuysWell, according to the news, Chelsea Handler is single again. On Wednesday, she announced that she had broken up with her latest boyfriend -- 'Animal Planet' host Dave Salmoni. Earlier this year, she dumped her previous boyfriend, Ted Harbert, CEO of the E! Network. (And yes, Chelsea certainly likes dating fellow TV people and/or her boss.)

But Ms. Handler is now 35 years old -- the age when many single women start to think about settling down. On the latest 'Chelsea Lately' (weeknights, 11PM ET on E!), she welcomes British singer Mel B, and the two of them discuss the whole dating issue. Mel is also 35 (but happily married), and she has some advice for Chelsea: Maybe consider dating black guys.

Fallout from Kanye West's jackass behavior at the VMAs

by Jane Boursaw, posted Oct 3rd 2009 4:29PM
Kanye West tour canceledHey, I didn't call Kanye West a jackass, the President did. But he's still a jackass either way. I'm sure he's been called much worse since he yanked the mic away from Taylor Swift at MTV's Video Music Awards in September.

When I heard that West and Lady Gaga would be touring together, I thought, what a horrible blow for Gaga. Not that she's any stranger to controversy, what with her blood-spattered performances and all. Actually, these two might be perfect to tour together.

But alas, the show will NOT go on, at least not with West. Apparently, he's being dropped from the tour, whether, as he told Jay Leno, he needed to take some time off, or whether he was asked to take some time off (I vote for the latter).

Gaga told Billboard, "Kanye's going to take some time off. But the good news is that I'm going on tour in a few weeks."

Ironically, the ill-fated tour was named "Fame Kills."

Is Kanye West MTV's biggest monster, or is it all for show?

by Kona Gallagher, posted Sep 14th 2009 10:30AM
Taylor SwiftBy now you've probably heard about the giant Kanye West brouhaha that happened at the VMA awards last night. I actually heard about it when I got on Twitter right after it happened, and it felt as though the very Internet was going to melt from the inside out, leaving us all twitching in a puddle of rage directed at people whom we will never meet.

I tried to piece together what had happened, and from the responses I was reading, it seemed as though Taylor Swift went up to get her VMA, then Kanye West set her dress on fire, ripped off his clothes, and showed everyone his "Beyonce 4 EVA" tattoo located in a very family-unfriendly place. Then, I'm pretty sure he peed on like, a statue of Jesus or something.

So once I saw the video of what actually happened, imagine my surprise when it turned out all he did was make an ass out of himself on live television. Because, you know, the fact that Kanye West would do that is the BIGGEST SHOCKER OF ALL TIME.
