ABC Orders 'Celebrity Wife Swap' (Yay!)

by Chris Harnick, posted May 4th 2011 1:00PM
Wife Swap'Celebrity Wife Swap' is coming! And guess what? It'll (probably) be amazing.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, ABC has ordered six episodes of the new reality series, which will feature celebrities trading their luxurious lifestyles for a week. No air date is set.

ABC adapted 'Wife Swap' from the U.K. version, which featured celebrity episodes where Freddie Starr and his wife Donna swapped lives with Samantha Fox and her partner Myra Strattan.

Here's the thing about 'Wife Swap': It's incredibly addicting. The show takes people, throws them into a completely absurd situation -- usually rich people switching with a family struggling through some rough economic times or a super religious family switching with Wiccans -- and lets the cameras roll. It's a classic formula that has made for hundreds of hours of entertainment.

An Insane Couple Dresses Up Like Superheroes on 'Wife Swap' (VIDEO)

An Insane Couple Dresses Up Like Superheroes on 'Wife Swap'"Insane" might be too mean a word to describe the Owen-Ladino family on 'Wife Swap.' So how about "insanely upbeat," instead?

Shanti (whose real former name is Patti) and her fianacée Arjuna (whose real name is Harold), like to dress up as superheroes and walk around like that in full daylight in New York City, and, that's cool, and -- well, no. ... We were right in the first place. They're just a little crazy.

The pair are of a couple of self-described "relationship" experts, who wear spandex and use their superhero identities to teach students about how to deal with the opposite sex. We might feel better about this if their costumes were cooler. But they dress kind of like Wonder Woman. Both of them dress like Wonder Woman -- the guy and the girl.

An Angry Conservative Dad Tries Not to Swear on 'Wife Swap' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 8th 2010 9:35PM
We're getting into some trouble on 'Wife Swap' (Fri., 8PM on ABC). The Harris family is from Tennessee, and abide by strict conservative values. Meanwhile, the Weasel family is all about non-conformity and living each day to the fullest. Of course, this will inevitably lead the two families into conflict.

When new "mom" Shanna Weasel takes over the household, she tries to get uptight dad Ken Harris to loosen up a little. The Harris kids have never been allowed to spend their own savings. By way of teaching their kids responsibility, the Harris family has their children run their own mini-businesses. But the kids aren't allowed to use any of their money. Instead, it is all funnelled into their future college fund.

But now, temporary mom Shanna decides to change the rules a little bit. She wants to let the kids spend some money, and she wants them to spend it on ... toys! Father Ken is predictably annoyed.

A Bigfoot Rap on 'Wife Swap' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Aug 1st 2010 9:25PM
A Bigfoot Rap on 'Wife Swap'It's another culture clash on 'Wife Swap' (Fri., 8PM ET on ABC). The Parker family and the Robinson family come from completely different worlds; as might be predicted for people appearing on this show.

The Parker family is obsessed with making their nine-year-old son "Lil' Chris" into a hip-hop star. Meanwhile, the Robinson family is obsessed with -- of all things -- hunting the mythical beast known as the "Swamp Ape." Which is basically a Floridian version of the monster known as Bigfoot.

But surprisingly, the families work their contrasting obsessions out! And they even want to meet again, after the initial shooting is over -- which is a 'Wife Swap' first. "Lil' Chris" Parker and 17-year-old Josh Robinson even decide to film a rap video about the hunt for the "Swamp Ape"/Bigfoot.

Emotional Husbands on 'Wife Swap' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 25th 2010 8:45PM
Emotional Husbands on 'Wife Swap'Let's meet two completely incompatible families on 'Wife Swap' (Fri., 8PM ET on ABC). The Warren family lives in upstate New York, where they run an organic goat farm. Because of their isolated location, 11-year-old son Shane Warren is miles away from his closest human friends. So Shane has become best friends with a lamb that lives on the farm -- a lamb named Lubert. Unfortunately, the family will soon be slaughtering Lubert, in order to sell him for meat.

Meanwhile, in Oklahoma, the Funderburgh family is run by "diva" mom Angie, who tells her kids that the most important thing is to be popular and good-looking. Angie runs a "cool school" for her children where she teaches them how to walk, dance, and act hip. She also bosses around her stay-at-home husband Tim, boasting about the fact that she lets her kids walk all over him.

A Madwoman on 'Wipe Swap' Tries to Deal With the End of the World (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jul 11th 2010 9:50PM
A Madwoman on 'Wife Swap' Tries to Deal With the End of the WorldHi there! And welcome to the end of the world on 'Wipe Swap' (Fri., 8PM ET on ABC). Of course it's always kind of the end of the world on 'Wife Swap,' since the show specializes in throwing together inappropriate couples, and then forcing them into knock-down, drag-out, "end of the world" type fights.

On the latest episode, husband Harry must deal with wife Dawn -- and Dawn is very concerned about the end of humanity. Specifically, Dawn is a little obsessed with the Mayan prophecy that says that the world will be destroyed in the year 2012. (By the way, if you'd like to read about how this "2012" thing is a wacky hoax that has nothing to do with anything, feel free to go here or here.)

At any rate, Dawn is worried about the end of the world. So she forces her new family to all put on life vests, and to then sit out in a inflatable raft in the yard. (Since the end of everything on this planet is something that can apparently be avoided if you just have an inflatable raft.) No one is that excited by this experiment, and Dawn even puts a life vest on the family dog. The dog then promptly runs away. "Come on!" says husband Harry. "Even [the dog] thinks it's ridiculous, for God's sake!"

Pioneer Man vs. Career Woman on 'Wife Swap' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted Jun 27th 2010 10:40PM
Pioneer Man vs. Career Woman on 'Wife Swap'The series 'Wipe Swap' (Fri., 8PM ET on ABC) prides itself on throwing together families from very different backgrounds. But this trend is taken to the extreme on the latest episode, and we get to witness a huge culture clash.

The Flannagin family lives in Alabama, and reenacts the 1800s pioneer lifestyle -- down to every last detail. This includes dressing in deer skins, starting fires with flints, and living in a hand-built log cabin. They also believe in old-fashioned gender roles, with the men going out to work and the women staying at home.

Meanwhile, the Logan family is "technology crazy." Their house has seven television sets, seven game consoles, and a remote control for their swimming pool. Wife Heather is the breadwinner, leaving her husband at home to take care of the kids.

So when Heather Logan and Stephen Flannagin meet and are forced to live together, you can bet that some major sparks will fly. Heather isn't exactly pleased with living in a log cabin, or with Stephen's "traditional" attitude towards women. On the other hand, Stephen finds Ms. Logan to be bossy and domineering.

Will there be a major fight? You bet there will! And it wouldn't really be an episode of 'Wife Swap' without one.

Labor Pains on 'Wife Swap' (VIDEO)

by Oliver Miller, posted May 16th 2010 9:45PM
Labor Pains on 'Wife Swap'It's role-reversal time on 'Wife Swap' (Fri., 8PM ET on ABC). A free-spirited wife tries to tell her new replacement "husband" all about the joys of giving birth. And her replacement husband is surprisingly into it.

The wife has the husband pretend that he's 9 months pregnant and is going into labor. Then, she has him give birth. The husband does a impressively realistic job of pretending to be pregnant -- he should be an actor or something. But to add a slight touch of creepiness to the whole affair, the wife has him give birth to a fake plastic child with a picture of his face taped to the doll. It really needs to be seen to be believed.

An Angry Dad on 'Wife Swap'An Angry Dad on 'Wife Swap'Making your kids into pop stars can be hard; and it can be hard on the kids too. On 'Wife Swap' (Fri., 8PM ET on ABC), a mother visits a family where a father with some anger issues tries to yell his kids into stardom. Dad Joey Fulco wants his children to be famous singers. But his parenting strategy is to just tell his kids that they're doing everything wrong. "They have to be scared when they walk in this house!" he says.

What to Watch: April 2

by Kim Potts, posted Apr 2nd 2010 6:00AM
'Wife Swap' (8PM, ABC) season 6 premiere
This may be one of the wackier swaps in the show's history, but the point is still made in the end, that each of the families can learn something valuable from its counterpart. The swappers: New Jersey mom Ro, who has three children -- three real children -- and 15 "reborn babies," $5,000 plastic dolls that have heartbeats, and, thanks to Ro's obsession, closets full of clothes. Ro and her three teens are also super slackers, while husband Jay is the sole breadwinner for his lounging family. Ro does a switcheroo with Alabama mom Teresa, who runs a coffee shop and hot dog cart with husband Dave. Actually, the couple gets by -- barely, thanks to the economy and the floundering coffee shop -- with a lot of help from their pre-teen sons, who are forced to help their parents run their businesses so frequently that the boys haven't even been able to hang out with their friends for more than a year. "Friends are overrated," says Dave.

Teen Featured on 'Wife Swap' Sues Show

by Bob Sassone, posted Mar 23rd 2010 3:00PM
Wife SwapHere's a tip for anyone who wants to appear on television: don't go on a reality show. Sure, there are a few reality shows that might be OK, but for the most part, they are going to be edited to make you look bad or they're going to be a horrible experience in general. There are other ways to get your 15 minutes of fame (note: please don't go for your 15 minutes of fame either).

A teen who appeared on the ABC reality show 'Wife Swap' (the title should tell you pretty much what the show is about) is suing the show and Disney for $100 million (say that in a Dr. Evil-like voice). She says that people at the show actually told her how to act (like a spoiled brat) and even wrote specific lines for her to say (viewers who think that reality shows are 100% unscripted live in a fantasy world of unicorns and rainbows). She says that after the show aired she was physically and verbally assaulted at school.

Top Stories of 2009: Reality scandals

by Michael Pascua, posted Dec 22nd 2009 10:01AM
The Salahis greet president Obama
It's interesting when one takes the time to look back back at 2009, several scandals that occurred this year were related to television. There were four big reality scandals that occurred in 2009, most of them happening in the second half of the year. They have stayed fresh in pop culture buzz.

This list doesn't count Jon & Kate's drama, all the injuries on Survivor, So You Think You Can Dance, and Dancing with the Stars, Chima's explosion on Big Brother, or Adam Lambert's sexual preferences. Those events pale in comparison to the five scandals listed.
