NBC Ratings Still Good After Olympics

by Danny Gallagher, posted Mar 8th 2010 8:00PM
The NBC logoSure the wall-to-wall Winter Olympics left a lot of people wondering why they should give half-a-crap about ice dancing, but NBC has bounced back with its post-Olympic lineup.

NBC's two new prime time series, 'Parenthood' and 'The Marriage Ref,' won the ratings game against their competitors, and even Jay Leno's triumphant return to 'The Tonight Show' beat David Letterman's 'Late Show.'

Of course, this is just the premiere week for these shows and it's not known if they can retain the numbers that have helped them back into first place for the first time in a good long while. At least the executives can breathe a little easier and Jeff Zucker can rest assured that he won't be losing his job anytime soon as opposed to maybe losing his job by some kind of divine intervention.

by Jane Boursaw, posted Mar 3rd 2010 7:07AM
Evan Lysacek, Top Ten List, David LettermanOlympic gold medal winner Evan Lysacek presented the Top Ten List on 'Late Show With David Letterman' (weeknights, 11:35PM ET on CBS). The figure skater had plenty of thoughts that ran through his mind during his Olympic routine.

Our favorite? Number six: "A gold medal could help me achieve my real dream: 'Snoopy on Ice.'" We bet that's what most of those figure skaters hope to achieve one day. You know, now that they've got those crazy Olympics out of the way.

Winter Olympics 2010, Closing Ceremonies, Catherine O'HaraCurling has to be one of the more interesting sports in the 'XXI Winter Olympics' (Sun., 7PM ET on NBC), and actor Catherine O'Hara added her own twist to it.

During the closing ceremonies, she put herself right into the middle of the games. We're just glad she didn't trip. Next time, Catherine, consider wearing flats.

by Joel Keller, posted Feb 26th 2010 10:33AM
TV Squad logoIf it's snowing like crazy where you are, the best thing for you to do is sit back and listen to us talk about TV. This week, Jason Hughes and Bob Sassone join me to talk about what's going on in the TV world:

  • More on the Winter Olympics and how bad NBC is messing them up,
  • The latest way the network morning shows are scaring parents (it has to do with the site Chatroulette),
  • The crazy first week of March on TV this year,
  • How most of the pilot casting news you're hearing about right now isn't going to matter in a couple of months,
  • How quickly the Andrew Koenig story spread from Twitter and Facebook to 'Larry King' and other national coverage (we taped this before Koenig's body was found yesterday),
  • Picks of the week, and more.

Run time is 1:17:05.

You can listen to the podcast below, or download from here or by subscribing to our RSS podcast feed. It is also available via iTunes. Feel free to leave us feedback in the comments or drop us a line at tvsquadpodcast [at] gmail [dot] com.

As usual, the music at the beginning and end of the podcast is "Life" by Justin Trawick.

My apologies for the hinky sound coming from Bob and Jason. It was a recording error that will get fixed for next week's show.

Stephen Colbert Does Slo-Mo High Five at the 'XXI Winter Olympics' (VIDEO)

Stephen Colbert, Slo-Mo High FiveStephen Colbert has done a great job covering the 'XXI Winter Olympics' on 'The Colbert Report' (weeknights, 11:30PM ET on COM). He reported on all the drama, the tears, the joy, and the victories.

But no one can top Colbert's slo-mo high five. He should get an honorary gold medal for his interpretation, not to mention teamwork.

Stephen Colbert to Lindsey Vonn: 'How Do You Tell If a Ski is a Boy?' (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 24th 2010 2:34AM
The Colbert Report, Lindsey VonnStephen Colbert in a macrame bikini? That's an image that's going to take a while to wipe from our hard drive. We're really hoping gold medalist Lindsey Vonn doesn't put in a good word for him with Sports Illustrated, as he suggested on 'The Colbert Report' (weeknights, 11:30PM ET on COM).

On the other hand, Colbert does have a point about the difference in men's and women's skis. "How can you tell the gender of a ski? Do you look under the binding? And if the ski is a boy, wouldn't that drag down the mountain a little bit?"

Well, you know, it all depends on how big the ski is.

Gold Medalist Evan Lysacek On Not Doing a Quad Jump (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 24th 2010 12:20AM
Larry King Live, Evan Lysacek, Winter OlympicsGeez, a guy wins a gold medal and all he gets is grief. Figure skater Evan Lysacek is getting six kinds of misery from Russian silver medalist Evgeni Plushenko for not doing a quad jump in his routine.

Lysacek has his reasons. On 'Larry King Live' (weeknights, 9PM ET on CNN), he explained that he had a stress fracture in his left foot last year, which started bothering him while training the quad prior to the Olympics.

"I didn't want my Olympics to be the same experience as I had at the World Championships, where I was wondering if I'd get through it. So the solution was just to alleviate the pressure on the left foot and take just that one element out."

And we just have to mention that Lysacek looks like he jumped out of a British rock band from 1962, which is not at all a bad thing.

What You Missed Last Night: Stephen and Ed Colbert At The Olympics

by Bob Sassone, posted Feb 23rd 2010 2:02PM
The commentary and analysis of The Olympics is more interesting than the Olympics themselves, like Joel's post about 'Today' and their coverage of the Games and the one about the ratings. Also, this clip from 'The Colbert Report.' Stephen is doing his shows this week from Vancouver, and last night he had his brother (an attorney) on to let him know what he can and cannot say about the Olympics so NBC doesn't get sue him.

Shaun White's Theory on Why Figure Skaters Cry (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 23rd 2010 2:38AM
The Colbert Report, Shaun WhiteIt's the question we've all been wondering about, and Stephen Colbert asked it on 'The Colbert Report' (weeknights, 11:30 PM ET on COM).

Why do the figure skaters burst into tears after learning they've won a gold medal at the 'XXI Winter Olympics,' and yet the snowboarders like Shaun White are tear-free?

White has a theory on that. "I imagine that they've gotta be sitting there like, 'Man, I wore this outfit and I still didn't even win.'" Yeah, that's what we thought.

Shaun White and Lindsey Vonn Dish on Gold Medals (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 21st 2010 10:25PM
The Oprah Winfrey Show, Lindsey Vonn, 2010 OlympicsGold medal winners Shaun White and Lindsey Vonn appeared on 'Oprah Winfrey' (weekdays, syndicated) to talk about their victories at the 'XXI Winter Olympics.' Both brought home gold medals for the U.S., and each went through their own journeys to achieve it.

White had the gold locked up even without his signature move, but decided to go for it anyway, even though he'd suffered an injury with it previously. "In my mind, it wasn't really an option ... I don't quit too easily."

For Vonn, the reality is still sinking in. "I can't believe I have a gold medal. It's just surreal to me ... everything that I've worked for my whole life is finally coming true. I've dreamed about that moment since I was a little girl."

Shaun White on Gold Medals, Being Single and Meeting President Obama (VIDEO)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 19th 2010 8:10PM
Shaun White, Oprah Winfrey, OlympicsShaun White has some awesome hair, doesn't he? Every day must be a good hair day. But even more awesome is the gold medal he won for the Men's Halfpipe at the '2010 Winter Olympics' this week.

The studio audience at 'Oprah Winfrey' (weekdays, syndicated) went wild as White showed off the medal and talked about his future plans.

What we learned: 1) The medal is cut from one big piece; 2) White is single (like, when would he have time for a relationship?); and 3) He really wants to meet President Obama. We're guessing that will probably happen quite soon.

Oprah One-Ups Matt Lauer on Olympics Souvenirs (VIDEO)

Oprah Winfrey, Matt Lauer, Olympics SouvenirsTake that, Matt Lauer! Think you've got the goods on all the hot Olympics souvenirs? Clearly, you don't know who you're dealing with, because Oprah Winfrey is very connected.

The talk show queen opened 'Oprah Winfrey' (weekdays, syndicated) today wearing the coveted red mittens that Lauer was all set to brag about. "That is so cold, Oprah," he said. "That is cold."

But it didn't stop Lauer from getting in a barb about her needing a bigger Mohawk Hat than the one he had on. Oh, by the way, Lauer? Everyone in Oprah's studio audience is getting those red mittens. Yeah, try and top that!

Stephen Colbert and His Sandwich Spotted at the Winter Olympics

by Danny Gallagher, posted Feb 18th 2010 10:02PM
Stephen Colbert has been lurking around Vancouver with nary a word from him like a class clown just waiting for the right moment to pounce on the biology teacher the minute she uses the word "titmouse."

NBC posted some photos of America's truthinestitizer joking around at the Vancouver Winter Olympic speed skating meet and greeting his fans at his outdoor set that the world will get to see next week.

It's not known if these images and bits will be included in his upcoming episodes or his coverage of the games for NBC. Either way, sorry for spoiling it for you. I might as well get ahead of the curve.
