Wrigley and G.M. Pull Ads From 'Skins'

by Catherine Lawson, posted Jan 24th 2011 8:40AM
'Skins'The controversy surrounding MTV's teen drama 'Skins' shows no signs of abating. After the Parents Television Council (PTC) targeted advertisers last week, Taco Bell pulled its ads from the show, saying it was not a good fit for the company. Now, more advertisers are following suit.

According to The Wrap, G.M. pulled its ads from 'Skins' Friday, but despite placing the series on its "do not buy" list, advertisements for the Chevy Volt were apparently aired by mistake. A G.M. spokesman said the company's products would not appear on the series in future.

The third major advertiser to withdraw from the series, Wrigley, said that it decided to suspend advertising during the show "as it is never our intent to endorse content that could offend our consumers." The company said previous ads during 'Skins' were part of a broader advertising plan with MTV.

Even Ricky's struggle to come to terms with his best friend falling in love with the girl next door and leaving behind their buddy-buddy relationship, was surprisingly meaningful to me. The scene where Janet advised Ricky to show B.J. how important his friendship was to him was wonderful. His hugging Mom like that was so true; Janet is a tough mother, but she's the embodiment of love and support and Ricky needed his mommy in that moment.
