Whoops! Changing My Tune on Fall's 'Best' and 'Worst' New Shows

by Maureen Ryan, posted Nov 23rd 2011 10:00AM
Reviewing television isn't like reviewing any other form of entertainment: Every show on the air is a work in progress and can go from good to bad (and vice versa) in a matter of weeks.

Assessing debut episodes is especially tricky, given that they have so much to accomplish and not a lot of time for all that set-up. Still, earlier this year, I felt confident enough about what I'd seen to make lists of the season's most promising and least promising new shows.

Did those judgments hold up? Did those shows fall on their faces after promising debuts, or get a lot better after wobbly pilots? Both things happened, as you might have guessed.

Below, I take a second look 'Grimm,' 'Ringer' and 'Once Upon a Time,' in addition to several other new shows, and I pay special attention to the ABC comedy 'Suburgatory,' the most improved program of fall's freshman class.

CBS Orders More 'A Gifted Man'

by Crystal Bell, posted Nov 15th 2011 4:00PM
cbs orders more a gifted manCBS has ordered three more scripts for their fledgling drama, 'A Gifted Man,' bring its freshman season to a solid 16 episodes, reports Deadline. However, it's not a full-season pickup, and the show's fate is still uncertain.

The series has struggled to find an audience in the ad-friendly 18-49 demo, averaging a 1.2 rating in the Friday 8 PM slot. However, in total viewers, the drama, starring Patrick Wilson, has been solid, most recently drawing 8.3 million viewers.

The network has picked up three of its five freshman series for full seasons -- 'Two Broke Girls,' 'Person of Interest' and 'Unforgettable.' Meanwhile, failed comedy 'How To Be a Gentleman' was cancelled.

'A Gifted Man' Doctor on Dating, Ghosts and Improving His Bedside Manner

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 30th 2011 10:15AM
'A Gifted Man' is a medical drama, but, the way actor Patrick Wilson describes his character, neurosurgeon Michael Holt, he could well be talking about a superhero. A blunt, take-charge superhero.

"Do you want the kind of doctor who's going to say, 'Listen, these are your options, and if it were me, I might do this. What do you think?'" Wilson said in an August interview about his CBS show. "Or do you want someone who'll go, 'This is how it's going to go down. I'm going to do this, and this is going to make you better.' You kind of want that."

Holt is indeed gifted in almost superhuman ways -- and he has the gleaming, high-end medical practice to prove it -- but the visit he got from his dead wife in the show's pilot deeply unnerved him, and his shield of clinical arrogance was no help to him in that situation.

Patrick Wilson On 'A Gifted Man' and His Complex Character Michael Holt (VIDEO)

by Alex Moaba, posted Sep 28th 2011 3:10PM
Patrick Wilson stopped by 'Today' (weekdays, 9AM ET on NBC) to talk about his new CBS series 'A Gifted Man' and his character Michael Holt, a cocky, hot-shot surgeon whose ex-wife appears to him as a ghost, inspiring him to give back.

Wilson said it was Holt's complexity that really appealed to him. "I felt like if I was going to do TV, then at least I wanted it to be a real conflicted guy, something I could really find my way around. This guy, on the outside, he's hard-edged and arrogant but I knew he had this other side going on."

The show was originally going to film in Los Angeles, but Wilson wasn't prepared to leave or relocate his young family. CBS moved the entire production to the East coast to accommodate him. Wilson said he was "humbled" their decision.

'A Gifted Man' Series Premiere: Anna Tells Michael How She Died (VIDEO)

by Jason Hughes, posted Sep 26th 2011 1:30AM
'A Gifted Man' - 'Pilot'There's truth to the old saying that opposites attract, and that truth was at the heart of the central relationship in 'A Gifted Man' (Fri., 8PM ET on CBS). Friday nights on CBS are no strangers to ghostly apparitions, but this may be the first time that a ghost is one of the stars of the show.

Michael Holt (Patrick Wilson) is a neurosurgeon who almost makes Dr. House look like a great guy. He's a jerk, but his ex-wife Anna (Jennifer Ehle) was one of the kindest and giving people in the world. Thus he works for fat checks while she ran a free clinic.

And yet, when he reconnected with her after several years, he was thrilled to see her. But then he found out she had died in a car accident not long before. Suddenly, he was questioning his sanity and health and all the while she kept coming to him.

Review: A Terrific Cast Brings 'A Gifted Man' to Life

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 22nd 2011 10:30AM
The best thing about the very good drama 'A Gifted Man' (8PM ET Friday, CBS) might be the fact that it's every bit as skeptical about ghosts as you are.

Well, maybe you're not skeptical about visitors from beyond the grave. Whether you are or not, 'A Gifted Man' should still work for you, because it treats the ghost, the person she appears to and the whole concept of working things out after death with an intelligent mixture of curiosity, confusion and compassion. There's no contempt, but neither is there any cliched, sentimental blather.

What I'm trying to say is, even though this show airs on Friday night on CBS, at no point will you be reminded of 'The Ghost Whisperer.'

Margo Martindale Talks Emmys, 'Justified' and Her 'Gifted Man' Role

by Maureen Ryan, posted Sep 16th 2011 2:00PM
Whether or not Margo Martindale wins a best supporting actress Emmy on Sunday, the nomination for her role on FX's 'Justified' has already had an impact on her life.

I spoke to her last month about her new role in the promising CBS drama 'A Gifted Man,' and she said she was both surprised by the Emmy nomination and gratified by how it had raised her profile after decades in the entertainment industry.

"It's lovely to be treated with such respect," Martindale said. "That has changed, and I think it changed with 'Justified.' I have been working for a long time, but it makes me feel great at my age to have a wonderful dressing room, for people to tell me how wonderful I am at what I'm doing."

The Battle of the Sexes: Men vs. Women in the 2011-2012 TV Season

by Maggie Furlong, posted Aug 11th 2011 12:00PM
Are TV viewers too dumb to decide which shows they're supposed to be watching? Apparently the broadcast TV networks think so.

With lineups that include an astounding number of gender-specific titles for the 2011-2012 season, it's starting to feel like the battle of the sexes is waging a new war on primetime TV.

It's as if the networks are sending out a loud and clear message to their audiences on both sides of the gender pool. Men: You should only be watching shows with the word "man" or some variation of that word in the title! And women: Don't mind the number of shows that had the word b*tch in the title (two: 'G.C.B.' and 'Apartment 23') -- we've changed them to be more female-friendly so you'll feel comfortable tuning in!

Curious how cross-gender, multi-sexual and downright all-inclusive these new un-sexily sex-titled shows are? We've judged and ranked them on a Sexist-o-Meter scale of 1-10, 1 being pretty inoffensive, and 10 being circa-1985 levels of shocking close-mindedness.

Let's take a look ...

EXCLUSIVE: 'Mad Men' Star to Guest on New CBS Drama 'A Gifted Man'

by Maureen Ryan, posted Aug 5th 2011 3:25PM
Cara Buono'Mad Men' actress Cara Buono will guest star on the new CBS drama 'A Gifted Man' this fall.

Buono, whom 'Mad Men' fans will recall had a recurring season 4 role as psychologist and advertising consultant Faye Miller, will play a very different kind of professional woman in an October episode of 'A Gifted Man.' Like Miller, her character is self-assured and strong, but on the CBS show, she's a charter-jet pilot who meets neurosurgeon Michael Holt at a cocktail party, and he first thinks she may have carpal-tunnel syndrome but finds that there may be more going on.

The medical drama 'A Gifted Man' is one of my favorite pilots for fall. You might find that surprising, given the description of the show, which could be summed up -- without giving too much away -- in this way: "Top New York doctor has a very unusual relationship with his ex-wife."
